Runaway
Runaway | Alice Munro
WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE(r)IN LITERATURE 2013 The incomparable Alice Munro s bestselling and rapturously acclaimed Runaway" "is a book of extraordinary stories about love and its infinite betrayals and surprises, from the title story about a young woman who, though she thinks she wants to, is incapable of leaving her husband, to three stories about a woman named Juliet and the emotions that complicate the luster of her intimate relationships. In Munro s hands, the people she writes about women of all ages and circumstances, and their friends, lovers, parents, and children become as vivid as our own neighbors. It is her miraculous gift to make these stories as real and unforgettable as our own."

“Her children say they hope she has not taken to Living in the Past. But what she believes she is doing, what she wants to do if she can get the time to do it, is not so much live in the past as to open it up and get one good look at it.” —“Powers” (2004)

I don‘t read many short story collections and I think it‘s why it took me so long to read it. I would go back to the book between reading others. It is also my first Alice Munro read. She really paints a wonderful picture and her stories almost seem like a novel all on their own. All the characters are complicated which I really enjoyed as well. I will read her again. If you don‘t read short story collections Alice Munro is a good place to start.

Sunday Book Club brunch. We read Runaway by Alice Munro and it was superb. Also, a bit tedious. But maybe that‘s the point. A dense read, with great rewards. These stories will stick with me for a long time.

PS. HI! I am coming back to Litsy and I feel excited about it. After a longgg break, I‘ve realized that this platform gives me a specific place to process and be intentional about what I am reading, and to share it all with YOU.

I do not have the words to express my appreciation for the mastery that Munro had for character development. She could accomplish more with a single sentence than many authors can with whole chapters. I was enthralled by the linked stories Chance, Soon and Silence— those characters haunt me in the best way—but every story is its own island of perfection.

When she read the letter, Juliet winced, as anyone does on discovering the preserved and disconcerting voice of some past fabricated self. She wondered at the spritely cover-up, contrasting with the pain of her memories. Then she thought that some shift must have taken place, at that time, which she had not remembered. Some shift concerning where home was. Not at Whale Bay with Eric but back where it had been before, all her life before.

This was my first Alice Munro and it won't be my last. The stories are those of women's live centering around 3 about Juliet from her youthful chance encounter on a train to her declining years. Well crafted and fascinating glimpses of individual lives i really enjoyed them . Anyway Happy Canada 🍁 day + ive dug out the box of biscuits my daughter bought back from her yr in a Canadian uni to enhance the image

LeahBergen I was going to say this looks pretty all-around Canadian and then I saw the Happy Canada Day comment. 🇨🇦🇨🇦 7y

Picked up this Penguin Modern Classics box set of Alice Munro's most popular short story collections for a mere $10! Now I can annotate to my heart's delight guilt free! The covers remind me a bit of Elena Ferrante's. What are these pictures trying to tell me about Munro's writing? Hmmmm.

Zelma Hmm, I see intimate stories featuring women. Or a reminder to always shave my legs. 😆 7y

Loved short stories in my younger days but have not read any for years and years. Decided to have a go at these. So very pleased I did . Im going to try more short stories . Any recommendations? Seems to suit my shorter memory span that seems to be developing as I age. When I was younger it was lack of time and having other reading to do for study that made short stories appealing . @MrsMalaprop

I thought I'd have to search and search for books that fit this prompt. As it turns out, I found these three plus many more. All of these are still TBR. I really need to read some of Alice Munro's works soon!

Somehow I missed the fact that Almodovar adapted three of Munro's stories from Runaway into a movie last year. Must see this!

Joybishoptx I missed that too! Must see that! 8y
Lindy @Joybishoptx I just checked and the movie has only just started being widely released in North America. 8y

This was my first attempt at reading Alice Munro and probably my last. It took me absolutely forever to read. Every time I set it down I wasn't compelled to pick it back up. The writing is good but the stories didn't grab me. In the end I just didn't get into it.

Munro's stories are the opposite of romantic: moving without being in any way sentimental. She writes about all kinds of ordinary women and manages so much character growth it's like you've read an entire novel with each short story. Elegant. Masterful.

Bibliogeekery That's really the perfect way to describe her! She's so great! 8y

Stalled on bingo card #2 for a while, but I'm back in the saddle. Only 3 more to blackout.

Category: Nobel prize winner. It's been 12 years since I read this collection of 8 long stories, enough time for every one of Munro's surprises to catch me unawares. Excellent idea to revisit this. Love her writing so much! ❤️

shawnmooney Alice Munro and Mavis Gallant have pretty much ruined me when it comes to other writers' short stories. Nobody else measures up. :-) 8y

I am going to see "Julieta " by Pedro Almodovar this week at The Sydney Film Festival and it is inspired on "Runaway".
I want to read the book first and see Pedro's take on it later.

My current rotation of short story collections TBR.

PurityofEssence @squarepeginroundhole Regardless of your opinion of the book, check out the film adaption of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) if you haven't already. It's absolutely brilliant. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @PurityofEssence Yes, it's one of my all-time favorites. Watched maybe a dozen times! Have you read the story? It's an incredible story from a craft pov. Its a bit of a shame that the film overshadowed it so much no one remembers that it was a story first, and a great one at that. 9y
ErikasMindfulShelf I like the idea of having a rotating short story collection! 9y

Bookgirl The Lottery and anything Shirley Jackson = brilliance 9y
laurenm Have you read any of Ellen Gilchrist's short stories? I'm reading "The Age of Miracles". Really good writing. 9y
Kosugi Goon Squad's a novel though ;) 9y
Dmbulan Have you read The Tyranny of Petticoats? That is on my TBR. 9y
kissxxmyxxconverse The Lottery is one of my favorites! Love your collection 👍🏻 9y
Lcsmcat The Proulx is excellent. If you enjoy it add Bad Dirt to your TBR pile. 9y
KVanRead Loved Goon Squad. Alice Munro is the best ever. 9y
ktparnell Which is your favorite?? 9y
JenniferShepard McCullers, Yates, Munro, Egan (Emerald City), and Jackson are all in my current story roundup. So are Jane Gardam, Charles Baxter, Phil Klay, and William Trevor. Enjoy! 9y
squarepeginroundhole @irre yes it's great if you like short stories and read them in bits, like one a day. It began accidentally but then I just made it a thing. It's a bit like having amuse-bouche for the brain. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @laurenm I have not. I will check it out. thx. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @Dmbulan I have not. will look it up. thx. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @jshepard seems like we're on a similar tip. let me know about Klay and Baxter. they're on my maybe list. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @kiernantherese good question. since I'm not done with most I can't really say. so far these stories were great: sweet smell of success by Lehman, Brokeback Mountain by Proulx, and anything by Trevor or Munro IMO. 9y
squarepeginroundhole @kiernantherese oh and The Lottery by Jackson was excellent. 9y
ktparnell Thanks for sharing! :) 9y
JenniferShepard @squarepeginroundhole : Baxter you could skip but the Klay is smart and important and would be a good fit in your current as he represents a different voice. 9y
DefLeppard Wow some interesting stuff on your tbr stack. I love seeing other peoples reading piles. :) 9y
MadisonBeReading @squarepeginroundhole A friend of mine recently recommended Egan to me. It's been sitting on my shelf for awhile but might be time to give it a go. 9y
QueenWing19 I would also recommend, if you haven't read them already, Russell Wangersky's Whirl Away and Ron Rash's Nothing Gold Can Stay. 9y
cuiuup I love that I'm not the only one that has a stack of tbr! 9y
Simone_Gibson Great stack! Definitely read Egan, that book won the Pulitzer for a reason ^_^ 8y
howifeelaboutbooks Have you read Raymond Carver's short stories? Highly recommend them! 8y
squarepeginroundhole @howifeelaboutbooks yes I think I've read everything by including his poetry. I wish there was more. 8y
howifeelaboutbooks Same here! 8y
squarepeginroundhole @howifeelaboutbooks Did u read Beginners, if so what did u think of Gordon Lish's editing? 8y
howifeelaboutbooks The edits were pretty extreme...on one hand I like the conciseness, but knowing it's not what the author intended kind of spoils it for me. You? 8y
Purva I love short stories! I know what I will be filling up my book shelves with. 8y
squarepeginroundhole @howifeelaboutbooks He definitely got chopped up. But I must admit, some stories IMHO were better after. Some not. I think the main loss by it was we couldn't see Carver's natural voice until Lish was out of the picture. 8y
howifeelaboutbooks Exactly! I love what I thought was Carver's style, and it's influenced my own because I try to be concise. So it's unsettling to learn it's not HIS style...but it's still good. 8y
MisterWhitaker This is great! Short stories are one of the ways I look to engage students, and these are some great picks. They love Carver's stuff. 8y
blatheringbroad Runaway is the only one I have read in this stack. Love it. Alice Munro is brilliant. Also love Carver, as some were saying. Not enough! 8y
Keegz63 Shirley Jackson is one of my favorites.... The Lottery traumatized me for life when I was 12. But in a good way ;) 8y
deniselynn A Visit From The Goon Squad was great! 8y
MimiBKNY Check out A Manual for Cleaning Women, stories by Lucia Berlin. A revelation. 8y
squarepeginroundhole @MimiBKNY It sounds interesting. Will check it out. Thx. 8y
