Raising Kids Who Read
Raising Kids Who Read: What Parents and Teachers Can Do | Daniel T. Willingham
13 posts
How parents and educators can teach kids to love reading in the digital age Everyone agrees that reading is important, but kids today tend to lose interest in reading before adolescence. In Raising Kids Who Read, bestselling author and psychology professor Daniel T. Willingham explains this phenomenon and provides practical solutions for engendering a love of reading that lasts into adulthood. Like Willingham's much-lauded previous work, Why Don't Students Like School?, this new book combines evidence-based analysis with engaging, insightful recommendations for the future. Intellectually rich argumentation is woven seamlessly with entertaining current cultural references, examples, and steps for taking action to encourage reading. The three key elements for reading enthusiasmdecoding, comprehension, and motivationare explained in depth in Raising Kids Who Read. Teachers and parents alike will appreciate the practical orientation toward supporting these three elements from birth through adolescence. Most books on the topic focus on early childhood, but Willingham understands that kids' needs change as they grow older, and the science-based approach in Raising Kids Who Read applies to kids of all ages. A practical perspective on teaching reading from bestselling author and K-12 education expert Daniel T. Willingham Research-based, concrete suggestions to aid teachers and parents in promoting reading as a hobby Age-specific tips for developing decoding ability, comprehension, and motivation in kids from birth through adolescence Information on helping kids with dyslexia and encouraging reading in the digital age Debunking the myths about reading education, Raising Kids Who Read will empower you to share the joy of reading with kids from preschool through high school.

As an #audiobook listener (about 50% of the books I read), I appreciate a psychologist backing up that yes, listening to a book is different from reading it in print in some ways, and no, it is not cheating and does indeed count as reading the book. 😊👍

Shannon_McKinney Interesting read! I as of late have started to listen to audiobooks. In the past I couldn‘t “get into them.” Lately I‘ve listened to quite a few and enjoyed them greatly. Mostly because of having such a busy schedule as a stay at home mom, and homeschooling my oldest! There is no “lunch break” for me, so an audiobook is easy to listen to while cleaning or laying in bed at night. 6y

Sitting in my car with my book for a bit longer today, since I came to the school early to see my oldest rewarded for meeting his reading goal for the first quarter. It's not a hard feat for my reader kid, but still proud of him.

Senoirs reading to Elementary students in my town! YESSSSSSSS. Big♡

AmyG That‘s awesome! 6y
Reecaspieces 👏👏👏😍 6y
Gina @AmyG @Reecaspieces I am a firm believer when we raise our kids in a "village" we raise the kind of people we want to leave the world to. (Putting soap box away now ?) 6y

Reecaspieces @Gina whole heartedly agree 6y
AmyG I agree. I will also say that it does so much for seniors to give back, socialize and be around children. 6y
Gina @AmyG Yes! There is a village in Sardinia where almost everyone lives to over a hundred. They say it's because they do not segregate the old from the young and that they often go to the older generation for wisdom. It is a model we should all follow in my opinion. 6y

The moment when your sister tells you that your favorite niece wants to join her school's book club. The teary emoji is symbolic of my overwhelming awe and pride in that little wonder I call my puddin pop. My family's back in VA and I miss them so much. #proudauntie #raisingreaders #kidlit #nieces

Apparently reading atop a basket is much more enjoyable than reading in typical places. In her defense, the basket is full of books so, maybe that's why she likes it so much ❤️

I signed my niece up for a monthly subscription for books and her first box came! I'm pretty pleased with it for only $9.99 a month. The ages range categories from 2 to pre-teen. http://bit.ly/2sPu5ZG

tpixie Fun! One more year for my 1 yo grandson!! 8y
Smangela Love this! Saving it for the future.. :) and trying to think of what little ones I could give this as a gift for! 8y
Smangela Actually question - it says it come with something for mom? Is that correct or did I misread? 8y

Robothugs @Smangela I'm not really sure if the lotion was meant for a grown up. It seemed to me it might be. It isn't a kid-friendly scent... but my niece likes it so I gave it to her. This is the first time I got this for her, so I'll see next month and let you know! 8y
Smangela I actually have a friend's little one's 2nd birthday party next week! I'm thinking I just found what I'm getting her haha I'd imagine the older the kids get, the more likely it is they'll like the added item 😂 8y
Robothugs @Smangela true! She's 5 and has been into makeup and the like since she came out of the womb. 😜 This definitely would make a good present! 8y

As a third grade teacher I tell my students this all the time. Most of them think they don't like reading and it just kills me! Anyone else get frustrated explaining how great reading is to non-readers?

CoffeeK8 I do, I work with a variety of struggling readers and I feel so bad when they say they hate reading. 8y
Purrfectpages Which grade levels do you work with @coffeek8? 8y
CoffeeK8 @Purrfectpages k-12, I do targeted literacy support district wide in special education classes. Primarily 3-8. 8y

JillR I'm not a teacher but get very frustrated when other parents say their children don't like reading, as though that is something that can't be fixed... keep looking for the right books! Graphic novels always seem to work for my son when he thinks a book is too "difficult" for him, ditto comics x 8y
Purrfectpages @JillR sometimes the problem is the parents aren't readers themselves! 8y

This is another post for #jennasfinalproject. My mom started to teach me to read when I three. By four, I was all set to go. That means I've been reading for 48 years. There's hardly a day that I'm not reading some type of book. @pocketmermaid

pocketmermaid It seems that moms have been coming up a lot in these posts. So many moms are responsible for getting their kids to read, mine included. 😀 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @pocketmermaid I think so! Although my sons all read with their kids too. 😎 (edited) 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @pocketmermaid I was thinking just now that my mom wasn't the voracious adult reader in my house. It was my dad. My grandmother, aunts and uncle were / are too. But mom taught me to read. 8y

GabrielleDubois But I can remember when I first knew how to read. Really! I remember I read an advert in the street, and suddenly I realized I could read all I wanted, not just what the teacher told me to. It's been like if I was blind and suddenly recovered the view for the first time! It was... 44 years ago, but it's still so clear in my mind! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @GabrielleDubois It's so cool that you remember the moment! 8y
