Joe spends a month in Texas, visiting his brother in prison, death row, before the scheduled execution date. Told in verse, this is an amazing and gut-wrenching story about family, forgiveness, and fortitude.

This book had some mature language so, please be careful. Overall I loved this book, it had me cry in tears for this one. so read this book!!! 😂
This could have been a one sitting read — I got started on it late and my eyes were drying out 😂
This is a story that needs to be shared. I can‘t think of another that covers this side of the justice system for teens.

Starting this tonight. I anticipate tears at some point.

This is a verse novel about Joe's brother - who is on death row for something he never did. Family, friends, memories, and injustice are key themes throughout.
I feel like the ending chapter could've been more satisfying but I've never read a book like this so will remember this one for a while.
It has moments of purple prose that will make you tear up. Ultimately, it is a quick read, building in intensity towards the end.
Recommend!
'You stay in today, Joe,
cos tomorrow's a story that ain't been written yet.
No use in rehearsing it.
No use at all.'
'We aren't the worst things we did
or the worst things that happened to us.
We're other stuff too.
Like...
We're the times we made cereal
or watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer
or helped an old lady off a bus.
We're the good, the bad, and the stupid, right?'
4/5🌛🌛. This book was heartbreaking. Ed Moon has received his date of execution. His 17 year old brother Joe leave NYC to Texas in the weeks prior to the death date. Reevaluating their poor upbringing and trying to cope with the impending day leaves an ache. Would highly recommend
#bookmail today was the Waterstones gift edition of The Underground Railroad and a signed copy of Moonrise. Plus this cute woodmark!
What I enjoy most about Sarah Crossan‘s work is how powerful and striking the simplicity of her poetry is at expressing the rawness of human experience. Moonrise is no exception to this. Chronicling the countdown to Ed Moon‘s execution on death row, the story is told through his brother Joe‘s eyes as he spends one last summer with Ed. Crossan‘s depiction of the effects on the families of prisoners is thought provoking and very much needed 👍🏼🌙
Just got back school to a book order. Excited to ready them!! Wish this could happen every day!
I love it when an advanced reading copy gets such a nice packaging. I haven't heard of Sarah Crossan, but both the plot and the poetic way the book is structured appeals greatly to me. Caught the first 100 pages last night, and hope to finish the rest today. This second image shows the book without sleeve.
