After the Fire
After the Fire | Will Hill
Deep in the Texas desert, Moon lives with her Brothers and Sisters. They're safe, protected by the Fence and Father John. Because Father John knows what's right and what's wrong. But then Nate arrives from Outside, stirring doubt...and suddenly Moon's world is on fire. But what happens after? What happens when you lose everything you've ever known? Powerful, gripping, and beautifully told, bestselling author Will Hill's After the Fire is a novel about love, hope, loss and, ultimately, courage. The courage to ask: Who can I trust? What is the truth? And is there any way back when everything you know is gone?

I found this book by accident (sorry about the ugly background mess and my big toe! Had to hold the book somehow!!) and I looked it over and saw it was for young adults. And I‘ll tell you what, I read it every night before I go to sleep. If I read it during the day I would have blown off all of my doctor appointments yesterday and today! And I have to go!
I really like this book! I bought this just before Christmas and I‘m almost done!

❐ Cult Life
❐ Told in Present Tense and Flashbacks
❐ Single POV
❐ Realistic Fiction
For me, this felt like a very realistic portrayal of life in a commune and of life after the commune. I find books about cults fascinating...I love to see how each author tackles this subject matter. From the brainwashing to the Polygamy and everything in between.

I put this on my to-read list almost a year ago and finally got to it - I didn't quite remember the synopsis but I think going it that made it even better! 4.5 ⭐ from me!

WOW this was a wild read; I LOVED this book. This was dark and twisty and sad and though I have no experience with cults this is what I imagine life in a cult is like. This book hooked me right from the start the characters have great names. There are very few books where I feel genuine anger or fear for the characters but this book enraged me, it made me sad and overall just made me want to keep reading to make sure Moonbeam was going to be ok.

Another YA book down for my lit class. This one was nominated for an Edgar Award in the YA category. Moonbeam has spent all her life as a member of The Lord‘s Legion, forbidden from leaving the groups compound. After a gun fight with authorities she must piece together what is left of her life and whether anything she‘s been told is true.

I finished this book last night but fell asleep before I could post a review. This book was so good but so intense. The pages just flew by. Moonbeam is a survivor of a cult that she was taken to when she was young. Told from her POV from before and after the fire. She gives an account of what happened inside the base. Moonbeam was such a strong person to overcome everything that she faced!

One of the most riveting books I've ever read. Not going to lie, I cried a little. The author had an incredible way of making you feel what the characters felt, and I find that to be a rare occurrence for me. I read this book in a day because I HAD to know what happened. 10/10

This novel was amazing. You get the story both in current time and the flashbacks that occur in Moonbeams therapy sessions and it is so wonderfully written that the transition is super smooth. The twists in the story are shocking and while I for saw the main one I still wasn't disappointed because this book kept me engaged from the very beginning. Highly recommend it to everyone!

I love when books have something written in the pages before the book actually starts. 😍 It really sets the tone if a book and gives you a preview of what the author is trying to portray.

Bad and good, False and True: they‘re the opposite ends of a whole spectrum of behaviour, not the only two things a person can be. Because life just isn‘t that simple. People aren‘t that simple, even though I‘m sure things would be a lot more straightforward if they were.

Wow, was this book intense. This fictional book is told from the perspective of Moonbeam, a girl who escaped alive from the takedown of the cult she had been part of since she was a small child. It jumps back and forth between Before/After the catastrophic fire and gunfight when they were rescued. It‘s excellent and a fascinating look at human behavior. What enables one person to control others so completely they will do ANYTHING for that person?

Wow, this one is impossible to put down once you‘ve started. Engrossing from beginning to end. Moonbeam remembers living in the world outside the property but it was a long time ago. Now, no one goes outside & Father John‘s world is law & breaking the rules comes with terrible consequences. I don‘t want to say much more but the main character is fabulous & brave & stubborn & impossible not to root for. A really good read. Definitely recommended.

After the Fire deals with the aftermath of a fire on a "religious" compound. There are only a few survivors and none over the age of 19. Moonbeam is the main character. She is a 17 year old girl who is one of the two oldest survivors of the fire. She is drowning in guilt. Hill has done an outstanding job in getting into the psyche of Moonbeam.

This book is centered around a cult survivor, Moonbeam. The titles are before and after the fire, giving us the story in increments, as she talks to a doctor and FBI agent. She is a strong, well developed character and the stuff that went on at the compound is disturbing but not graphic. It held my attention throughout and I was invested in her story. While reading this I couldn‘t help but think of Waco. Highly recommend this one. #netgalley

Where do I start? This is an incredible story of survival but also an exploration of blind faith, our need to believe and how that can be manipulated. Moonbeam‘s voice is one of the most honest I‘ve ever heard and the way the timelines were woven together made for an intense, compelling and emotional experience. I can‘t rate this book highly enough!
