Hey, Kiddo | Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Pickpick

Thanks to @hes7 for the suggestion on #bookaboutaddiction for #booked2019. This was a fast read, and while It wasn‘t a light story, the graphic memoir format made it very enjoyable. Krosoczka did not have an easy childhood but he recognizes that while also appreciating the love and some level of privilege he did have. Each character has many dimensions, which is perhaps the most impressive part in the graphic novel format.

4thhouseontheleft Great review! I read this for the addiction prompt also. 2w
AmyG I read this, too. Excellent book. 2w
Cinfhen I‘m So tempted but I usually don‘t do well with GN 😬 2w
hes7 Yay! I‘m glad this worked for you! 2w
Johanna414 We just read this for our public library's book club and it was a huge hit! Most of the ladies had never tried a graphic novel before, and were surprised by how much they liked it. 2w

This was like watching a reality TV show with all the friendships and drama but where you get to see what goes on behind the scenes too; all the low points of being a ‘star‘ (and there is a lot of them in the latter half). I‘m glad to have finally read it after it being on my tbr for years 💕 #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

writerlibrarian What a great choice for that prompt. 😄 2w
IamIamIam I'm so glad you liked it!! I may have to revisit this! We love the film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls but it's so ridiculous...😂😂 2w
readordierachel I need to pick this up soon. Sounds like a fun one! 2w

youneverarrived @IamIamIam haha I can imagine 😂 2w
youneverarrived @readordierachel it was a fun read despite the melodrama. I really liked it. 2w
Cinfhen I read this recently I thought it was a blast!!! So campy and addictive 💊 2w
youneverarrived @Cinfhen yeah exactly that 👌 2w
tpixie I‘ve always hated to read this also! 2w
Suet624 Always great to get a book off your TBR. 2w
Pricel101 I hate reality TV but totally enjoyed this 🤷‍♀️ not ashamed to say gossipy, behind-the-scenes reads are fun! 1w
youneverarrived @Pricel101 I have to be in the mood for reality TV but I‘m not a big fan of it either. I‘d rather read a gossipy book like this than watch it on the TV. 1w

My #weeklyforecast this week is dedicated to #booked2019 📚 I‘ve made some progress on each of these reads this weekend:

Ohio #bookaboutaddiction
William, an Englishman #soldiersstory
The Water Dancer #PoCMCParanormal (which I am LOVING by the way, can't put it down!)

Thanks to our hosts for the bookish inspiration!! @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

EmilyM I just finished Water Dancer this afternoon.....loved it! I think I am going to now read Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad to follow it up. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft I really want to read The Water Dancer! I‘m on hold for it at the library. 1mo
Cathythoughts I nearly got the Water Dancer the other day 🤔... maybe I‘ll go back & get it 👍🏻❤️ 1mo

emilyhaldi @EmilyM its reminding me so much of Underground Railroad!! I'm already loving it as much. Perhaps thats why I keep thinking you would love it, Cindy! @Cinfhen (edited) 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved Water Dancer. So glad Coates stretched into the world of fiction without losing his social justice focus. 1mo
Reviewsbylola Oh really?! I didn‘t even consider reading the Coates because paranormal. 😛 How is Ohio? 1mo

The Door | Magda Szabo

My #weeklyforecast is pretty simple this week-
I'm about halfway through the tagged book and would love to finish by next Sunday. In the meantime, hoping to get started on Ohio for #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction 🙃

Cinfhen Very doable!!! I own Ohio, so curious to hear your thoughts!! 1mo
ljuliel Dear Cinfhen , If you own Ohio , we have a pothole on our street that needs attention and our neighbor‘s tree roots are blocking the rainwater when we get hard rains. Is there any way you can look into this for us ? I know we are a small town, but we pay taxes too. Thank you. 😁 1mo
BarbaraBB Beautiful picture! I have a copy of The Door too, so am looking forward to your thoughts! 1mo

BarbaraBB @ljuliel 😂😂 @Cinfhen as the owner of Ohio 🤪 1mo
Cinfhen Hahahahaha!!!! Hilarious @ljuliel I‘ll send a crew out your way but only as a Litsy friend & family courtesy 1mo
Cinfhen Thanks for the tag @BarbaraBB xx 1mo
ljuliel One of the times I read the comments before looking at the photo. I sorta figured you didn‘t own our state or I probably would have heard about it before this. 😊. Just joking. I WOULD appreciate someone repairing the above items. We‘ve asked the city workers and it hasn‘t been done yet so I thought I‘d go over their heads to the owner of the state. 😁. @Cinfhen 1mo
Reviewsbylola I still need to read Ohio too! 1mo
Mdargusch I really disliked The Door. I believe it caused me to drink @BarbaraBB 🥃 it‘s dark. 1mo
Mdargusch 🤣🤣🤣 @ljuliel 1mo
BarbaraBB @Mdargusch Oh really? I had such high hopes! 1mo
Mdargusch It‘s just me @BarbaraBB I think if you are a fan of NYRB books then you will be a fan of this one. 1mo

A heartbreaking look at what addiction does not only to the addict but to their family as well. A tough but important read. #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction

CaseyLea I loved this one too, even though it was an emotional read - beautifully written, I thought 1mo
Cinfhen I‘ve seen so many glowing reviews for this memoir! Have u seen the film??? 1mo
OriginalCyn620 @Cinfhen I have not seen the movie and now I don‘t know if I can. The book was rough enough! 1mo

IvoryLunatic @OriginalCyn620 I agree. I don‘t think I could watch that movie. 1mo
katlyn447 I had the opportunity to hear Nic speak earlier this year about his addiction and the books it inspired. Definitely a tough story to hear, but it's inspiring to see how this family has coped and come out the other side. 1mo
OriginalCyn620 @katlyn447 That‘s amazing! I bet he‘s a wonderful speaker. 1mo

This was a really interesting book about addiction. It was both funny and sad/ scary and I really felt like it was raw and honest at the same time. I really think the author took the time to show the despair and difficulties of living a life with addiction. The writing was great and quick to get through even though the subject matter was tough. #booked2019
#bookaboutaddiction

Cinfhen I find these type of memoirs really powerful. 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage It takes a lot of courage for an author to put themselves out there to the world. Interesting pick! 1mo

An absolutely remarkable mix of memoir and dissertation on substance abuse and creativity. Jamison also expounds on the socioeconomic forces that influence our country‘s approach to addiction and who we tend to see as victims vs. who we see as criminals. It is a VAST undertaking that I spent about a month with but it will stick with me far longer. 5⭐️ 👇🏼

Christine Ugh, this one was so good! ❤️ 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like I must add to my TBR. 2mo

I listened to this on audio and it encouraged me to de clutter and pitch stuff, so that‘s a win. 😆 The lesson that resonated with me the most was to buy things you need, and not for the person you want to be. I find myself buying things to fit a persona that I want to emulate, so that has been in the back of my mind. Since the author deals with addiction to alcohol and shopping, I‘m counting this for #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction

vkois88 I want to read this but I feel like I need to buy it... which means breaking the main rule ??? That's what kills me about these types of NF "self-help" books. Otherwise, I'd definitely be interested. 2mo
Reviewsbylola 😆😆 I borrowed it through my library so I didn‘t have any guilt. But the author did denounce book buying and that I could never do. 😱😱 @vkois88 2mo
Cinfhen Interesting / how true about our need to “Dress to Impress” ~ as I get older, im getting better about falling into that designer addiction/ I care much less 2mo

vkois88 Lol I'll have to see if my library system has it!!! 2mo
charl08 Well I was tempted until I read about the book buying... 2mo
Mdargusch Very interesting. Too bad amazon is just so easy. 2mo
Zelma I really liked this book. Less as a decluttering book and more about a memoir on grief and addiction. It totally worked for me and I wish it had been marketed as such. 2mo

This book is exciting and trashy and all kinds of depressing, and I might have really loved it. The ending made me SO depressed and there was some hard to swallow language and fat shaming in it that I can‘t bring myself to give it 5 stars on Goodreads JUST YET. #Booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction #spoileralert #its💊💊

mcipher It‘s so of its time - you gotta let some of the blatantly awful go and remember that things were different then. It‘s so trashy and good!!! 2mo
