Beneath a Meth Moon: An Elegy | Jacqueline Woodson
post image
Pickpick

Laurel loses her mother, grandmother and hometown to Hurricane Katrina. Trying to find work, her father moves her and her little brother to Iowa. She finds a best friend, becomes a cheerleader and starts dating the co-captain on the basketball team. Then she is introduced to meth and everything changes. This is my first book by Woodson and I want more. In less than 200 pages, I was invested in most of the characters. Yeah, I cried. #Booked2019

Suet624 Woodson is amazing. 4y
Bookzombie @Suet624 Yes! Definitely want to pick up more of her work. 4y

Despite having a copy from #BOTM I decided on the full cast audio version and it was brilliant. I especially loved Graham who was voiced by Benjamin Bratt. I love his voice. Camila was fantastic. I adored her 💚

Cinfhen I think had I listened instead of read this would have been a pick for me. But in print format it fell a little flat 4y
MidnightBookGirl My favorite audio of the year! 16pts! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I regret not listening ... but can‘t imagine re reading it. 🤓 4y

Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

Just realized I can use this book for the #bookaboutaddiction prompt in #booked2019. I only completed 12/24 prompts, but much more than last year! I think this year I won‘t pick a book until I‘m ready to read that prompt. Picking ahead of time didn‘t work out well for me!

Mehso-so

#Booked2019 #Autumn #BookAboutAddiction

Meh. I like memoirs—a LOT—let me say that up front. Addiction memoirs, maybe not so much. So now you know my bias. There are exceptions to this, but this book is not one of them. The positive aspects were very personal to me: Hepola grew up about a three-hour car ride due west from where I grew up, so some of the challenges she faced in the conservative South were familiar to me. She also followed a ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (cont) similar life path, i.e., moving to New York, traveling & writing. I felt a deep kinship with Hepola. I recognized some of her antics and foibles. But because something is familiar to me doesn‘t necessarily make it a great read. The thing about these addiction stories is that they are very routine: drunkalogue; recognition of things coming undone; sobriety. The author herself bemoans the fact that a lot of these books become less ⬇️ (edited) 4y
gradcat ⬆️ (cont.) interesting as we reach the sobriety part. And it‘s a shame that redemption seems boring, because it shouldn‘t be that way. In more interesting books than this one, it‘s not. And that‘s why I‘m only giving Hepola‘s memoir a so-so rating. By the way, I know that this is going against the grain . . . lots of Littens loved this book—so sorry! ♥️ (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Great review!! Thorough and thoughtful. I read this one for the same prompt and I walked away not really learning much. It was good but not memorable (edited) 4y

Amiable You don‘t need to apologize for how you feel about a book. Very eloquent review! 4y
TrishB I agree with @Amiable it would be very boring if every review was the same! Great review 👍🏻 4y
squirrelbrain Great review! @TrishB sent me this one and I‘m hoping to read it soon... your review hasn‘t put me off! 4y
Bklover Wonderful review! 4y
TrishB @squirrelbrain definitely one you need to read and decide how you feel! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks for the review—this one‘s on my Kindle shelf. Now I know what mindset I need to be in in order to give it a try. 😎 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen @Amiable @TrishB @squirrelbrain @Bklover & @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you, all of you, for such nice responses! And absolutely, as Trish says, for both Barbara & Helen: Don‘t let me put you off. It‘s a quick read, so you won‘t have wasted too much time if you don‘t like it. ♥️ 4y
Crazeedi @gradcat well thought out review, you always do such a great synopsis! 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi Why thank you, Diane! One more to go to complete Booked2019! ♥️ 4y

Hey, Kiddo | Jarrett J. Krosoczka
post image
Pickpick

Thanks to @hes7 for the suggestion on #bookaboutaddiction for #booked2019. This was a fast read, and while It wasn‘t a light story, the graphic memoir format made it very enjoyable. Krosoczka did not have an easy childhood but he recognizes that while also appreciating the love and some level of privilege he did have. Each character has many dimensions, which is perhaps the most impressive part in the graphic novel format.

alisiakae Great review! I read this for the addiction prompt also. 4y
AmyG I read this, too. Excellent book. 4y
Cinfhen I‘m So tempted but I usually don‘t do well with GN 😬 4y
hes7 Yay! I‘m glad this worked for you! 4y
Johanna414 We just read this for our public library's book club and it was a huge hit! Most of the ladies had never tried a graphic novel before, and were surprised by how much they liked it. 4y

Valley of the Dolls | Jacqueline Susann

This was like watching a reality TV show with all the friendships and drama but where you get to see what goes on behind the scenes too; all the low points of being a ‘star‘ (and there is a lot of them in the latter half). I‘m glad to have finally read it after it being on my tbr for years 💕 #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

writerlibrarian What a great choice for that prompt. 😄 4y
IamIamIam I'm so glad you liked it!! I may have to revisit this! We love the film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls but it's so ridiculous...😂😂 4y
readordierachel I need to pick this up soon. Sounds like a fun one! 4y

youneverarrived @IamIamIam haha I can imagine 😂 4y
youneverarrived @readordierachel it was a fun read despite the melodrama. I really liked it. 4y
Cinfhen I read this recently I thought it was a blast!!! So campy and addictive 💊 4y
youneverarrived @Cinfhen yeah exactly that 👌 4y
tpixie I‘ve always hated to read this also! 4y
Suet624 Always great to get a book off your TBR. 4y
Pricel101 I hate reality TV but totally enjoyed this 🤷‍♀️ not ashamed to say gossipy, behind-the-scenes reads are fun! 4y
youneverarrived @Pricel101 I have to be in the mood for reality TV but I‘m not a big fan of it either. I‘d rather read a gossipy book like this than watch it on the TV. 4y

The Water Dancer: A Novel | Ta-Nehisi Coates

My #weeklyforecast this week is dedicated to #booked2019 📚 I‘ve made some progress on each of these reads this weekend:

Ohio #bookaboutaddiction
William, an Englishman #soldiersstory
The Water Dancer #PoCMCParanormal (which I am LOVING by the way, can't put it down!)

Thanks to our hosts for the bookish inspiration!! @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

EmilyM I just finished Water Dancer this afternoon.....loved it! I think I am going to now read Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad to follow it up. 4y
alisiakae I really want to read The Water Dancer! I‘m on hold for it at the library. 4y
Cathythoughts I nearly got the Water Dancer the other day 🤔... maybe I‘ll go back & get it 👍🏻❤️ 4y

emilyhaldi @EmilyM its reminding me so much of Underground Railroad!! I'm already loving it as much. Perhaps thats why I keep thinking you would love it, Cindy! @Cinfhen (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved Water Dancer. So glad Coates stretched into the world of fiction without losing his social justice focus. 4y
Reviewsbylola Oh really?! I didn‘t even consider reading the Coates because paranormal. 😛 How is Ohio? 4y
