MASH
MASH | Richard Hooker
16 posts | 20 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
The book behind the hit TV series and movie. The doctors and nurses who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained, dedicated, and pushed to the brink. And they were young - too young to be doing what they had to do. As Richard Hooker writes in the Foreword, 'A few flipped their lids, but most of them just raised hell, in a variety of ways and degrees.' Meet the true-life heroes and lunatics who fought in the Korean War, and experience the martini-laced mornings, marathon high jinks, sexual escapades, and that perfectly corrupt football game that every fan of the movie will remember. It's also a story of hard work and skill in the face of enormous pressure and odds. Here is where it all began - the novel that made M*A*S*H a legend.

Very much of its time, so - you know, racism, sexism, etc., but all that aside, still a comedy gem! Madcap from top to tail, MASH is definitely a must read for fans of the TV show, and fans of funny in general!

OriginalCyn620 I didn‘t know MASH was a book! 4y
eeclayton @OriginalCyn620 I was surprised too when I came across the book in the library! But, while the book has its moments, I have to say I find the show much more enjoyable. 4y
MaleficentBookDragon @OriginalCyn620 me either! I have to stack that. 4y

Thanks for paying it forward with the #Endowarrior21Giveaway. One of my all-time favorite books is the one I‘ve tagged. Loved the book, didn‘t care for the movie, and the TV series will always hold a special place in my heart. I‘ve read it multiple times, just as I‘ve watched the TV show multiple times.

Texreader Definitely a fave tv show from my childhood 6y

This is one of my all-time favorite books (hence my screen name). Alan Alda portrayed Pierce so well in the tv show that his voice is all I hear through the entire novel. I‘m rereading this in those moments that I need a little levity with some perspective thrown in.

More flying, more reading! 👏🏻 Although I do need to sleep a bit too. 😴 This looks like a short read so hopefully I can do both.

I didn't like this book at first. I am a huge fan of the tv series and it had some major differences. I did eventually come around as the stories matured. (He could have used a better editor however.) It was also a bit inconsistent in the way he saw and portrayed the Korean people, switching to sometimes calling them gooks and chinks for instance. Overall it was ok but I won't likely read any more by this author. The tv show has more heart.

CherryPie How about the film? 6y
bookishbitch @CherryPie Gosh it has been so long since I've seen the movie I'm unsure. 6y

My new paperwhite arrived. Now she just needs a name. Am I the only one who names them? So far I like it quite a lot. The new screensavers are very beautiful.

starlight97 I think her name should be Liberia 7y

I grew up watching the TV series, MASH, so I wanted to find out where it all began. It does have characters with the same names. I loved this book. I strongly recommend it for anyone who loves to read. I read it first in elementary school, at an age where no one should read this book, and at least a couple of times since then. I recently added it to my Audible collection and now it's time for a re-read.

Zelma I ended up bailing on this one but Mr. Z liked it. About halfway though I just felt like I'd read enough. We're huge fans of the show. 7y
CatLass007 @Zelma I'm sorry you didn't like it. That must've been quite a disappointment after being such a fan of the show. Goodness, I'm disappointed for you! I guess I just want everyone to like the same things I like. But what a boring world that would be. I'm really ticked they took the show off of Netflix! Now I have to save up money to buy the series on DVD. (edited) 7y

Hmm, this is a tough one to abandon. I got about halfway through and just can't get motivated to pic, it up again. I love seeing the source material and comparisons to the movie and show (the movie is much closer to the book than the tv series). It's pretty dark and not nearly as humorous as I expected. Unfortunately I really didn't like writing and that ultimately led to my lack of interest in finishing.

A little inspired drinking from my favorite doctors. We watched the movie tonight (but, of course, I had to read the book first). 😉

Zelma Nicely done!!! Mr. Z just finished the book and we are currently watching the series from the beginning - my first full-watch and his umpteenth. 😂 also the reason we have a cat named Radar. 7y
youngreadrshelf @Zelma I've watched the series many times. My husband and I are indoctrinating our son. Love the cat's name -- purfect. 7y
Zelma @youngreadrshelf thanks! 😻 7y

I needed a little something this week. I have the ebook of I Hate Fairyland but decided I wanted the paper copy. Plus I neeeeeeeed the sequel.

rubyslippersreads I ❤ Doc. I need to read the sequel. 7y
Zelma @rubyslippersreads I bought sequel during an ebook sale so I scooped this up when I saw the price. The local library copy of Doc was too stinky to read. 😳 7y
BookishMarginalia Stinky books! 🙊🙊🙊 -- Nice #bookhaul! Enjoy! 💜 7y

DGRachel Ugh. Hoopla only has Fairyland vol 1. I've requested the sequel from my library. Now...I just have to wait. 😱 7y
Zelma @BookishMarginalia yeah, I feel bad complaining about that and I am the ultimate library proponent, but um, it was rank. 😬 7y
Zelma @DGRachel I bought Vol. 1 as an ebook when none of my libraries or bookstore had it. I can't wait for the digital version of Vol. 2 so I caved and bought them in paper. 😳😁 7y
Suzze I'm almost ready to buy Vol. 2. I don't know how much longer I can wait. 7y
Zelma @Suzze mine just shipped and I am so excited. I could lend you my copy. It you'd still have to wait for me to receive it and then mail it out. (Reading will be immediate 😂 ) 7y
Suzze @Zelma Thanks for the offer, but it's not like I don't have a thousand other things to read. Hopefully Hoopla will get it. 7y

M.A.S.H is fantastic beyond my imagination. And from what I remember of the movie it's very true to form. The narrator has won several awards and I haven't been bored to death while driving, so that speaks volumes.
