Potato Factory
Potato Factory | Bryce Courtenay
5 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
Ikey Solomon's favourite saying is also his way of doing business. And in the business of thieving, he's very successful indeed. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted & each must make the harsh journey from thriving nineteenth century London to the convict settlement of Van Diemen's Land. In the backstreets and dives of Hobart Town, Mary learns the art of brewing and builds the Potato Factory, where she plans a new future. But her ambitions are threatened by Ikey's wife, Hannah, her old enemy. The two women raise their separate families, one legitimate and the other bastard. As each woman sets out to destroy the other, the families are brought to the edge of disaster. Stay in touch with all of Bryce's news on Facebook:facebook.com/BryceCourtenay

Pickpick

This is an amazing book!!!! I read it in college, many moons ago. Historical fiction is my favorite. Mary, the main character, is such a dynamic character; you will cry and laugh and cry some more. Courtenay is a fantastic writer! Check out the second book, Tommo and Hawk!! (It‘s a trilogy, the third was ok but the first is by far the best!!)

The summer before my senior year of HS my dad and drove up to Vancouver BC so I could (among other things) go to some bookstores and get some books not available in US (the Internet was still in its infancy at that time, so not really an option - yes I‘m old). I purchased quite a few Courtenay books that trip... and these two are still unread #24in48 #sharetheshame

MayJasper I hope they're great 6y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thanks for the tag! I posted mine this morning because I just couldn‘t wait. Sarah Waters is on my list too! And no one writes a battle scene better than Bernard Cornwell. 👍 7y
