Aunts Up the Cross
Aunts Up the Cross | Robin Dalton

My great Aunt Juliet was knocked over and killed by a bus when she was eighty-five. The bus was travelling very slowly in the right direction and could hardly have been missed by anyone except Aunt Juliet, who must have been travelling fairly fast in the wrong direction. Growing up in the 1930s in a grand old home in Sydneys bohemian Kings Cross, Robin Dalton experienced a childhood of curiosity and wonder. Raised by a bevy of idiosyncratic aunts and a revolving door of unconventional houseguests, Dalton recalls a time when children had real adventures in a world not easy but perhaps less complicated than todays. With a gentle warmth and wicked wit, Robin Dalton brings to life all the colour, glamour and charm of Australian society between the wars. Steeped in nostalgia, Aunts Up the Cross is a delightfully funny memoir of family, childhood and an Australia of yesteryear. Robin Dalton was born in Sydney, and has lived in London since 1946. She has been a television performer, an intelligence agent, a literary agent and a film producer (Madame Souzatska starring Shirley Maclaine; Oscar and Lucinda starring Cate Blanchett), as well as an author. Her 1965 account of her childhood in Kings Cross, Aunts up the Cross remains an Australian classic. The previously unpublished My Relations will be released in 2015. Hysterically funny. Jennifer Byrne A hugely energetic gallop, nicely complemented by Dinah Dryhursts spikey, spirited illustrations...[Dalton] lived a technicolour, quite glorious life, which youll enjoy being diverted by. New Zealand Herald A quirky and hilarious childhood memoir. I havent laughed so much in years. Tim Flannery, The Books We Loved 2016, Sydney Morning Herald

Thursday‘s op shop scores. My mum is going to make me another quilt out of that gorgeous fabric. She is semi retired now. The bikini is for me for this season. The shorts are for my teenage step daughter. I will pass the audio books on to my dad when I‘m finished with them. He likes to listen to them whilst driving. The cds are for my youngest sister‘s kids. One of the books is an uncorrected proof. I always find them interesting. Total price $39.

charl08 Loved the Forna. Such a great author. 3y

I‘m finally getting around to this Australian memoir, set in 1920s Sydney (and sent to me by my lovely friend, @CarolynM ❤️).

It‘s starting out with lots of humour and quirky family members so it‘s right up my alley!

LapReader I got one of her parcels in the mail the other day. Isn‘t she a beautiful person? 4y
LeahBergen @LapReader She most certainly is! ❤️ 4y

Like all of Sydney being a dusty hodgepodge of low-built buildings, all in need of a coat of paint - the upper halves flats and residential rooms and the lower halves shops, offices and cinemas. Between the two, cutting off the dirty stucco and dingy brickwork from the glaring neon signs, were the ubiquitous iron or concrete awnings, the most characteristic features of Sydney's dim architecture.
