I Want My MTV
I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution | Rob Tannenbaum, Craig Marks
8 posts | 8 read | 20 to read
Named One of the Best Books of 2011 by NPR Spin - USA Today CNBC - Pitchfork - The Onion - The Atlantic - The Huffington Post VEVO - The Boston Globe - The San Francisco Chronicle For fans of VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in "Thriller"? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in "Jump"? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? The Beastie Boys spray beer in "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"? Axl Rose step off the bus in "Welcome to the Jungle"? Remember When All You Wanted Was Your MTV? It was a pretty radical idea-a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined. I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties. From its start in 1981 with a small cache of videos by mostly unknown British new wave acts to the launch of the reality-television craze with The Real World in 1992, MTV grew into a tastemaker, a career maker, and a mammoth business. Featuring interviews with nearly four hundred artists, directors, VJs, and television and music executives, I Want My MTV is a testament to the channel that changed popular culture forever.

MTV's auxiliary 24-hour music channels have gone dark worldwide. The cultural juggernaut is now mostly home to reality shows and competitions, as it joins TLC and The History Channel as a station whose name has lost all relevance.
Is it a bad thing, though? I submit, for your consideration, the music video for Katy Perry's Woman World. Be warned, this is not safe for human consumption 😜

TieDyeDude In all honesty, though, it is disappointing to lose a cultural icon. MTV was blocked on our TV for a large part of my childhood (not that we didn't find ways around it), and my musical tastes leaned more towards VH1 and CMT, but I remember, among other things, tracking the rise of Eminem, being traumatized by Black Hole Sun, and the twisted Celebrity Death Match. 4d
TheBookHippie I remember seeing Black Hole sun for the first and last times. So powerful. ♥️🙌🏼 Hair stood up on your arms good. 4d
TheBookHippie @TieDyeDude MTV didn‘t come out until I was a late teen. Senior in high school I think. It‘s fuzzy. 😅👵🏼 4d

Texreader @TieDyeDude MTV in the 80s was the best. Banned as well, but yea, ways around that. 4d
Karisa I loved the videos on MTV too. Couldn‘t watch them on front of my religious parents but it was one of the perks of being a latch key kid. I was mesmerized by Losing my Religion, Jeremy, and Take on Me… so many great videos! 4d
TheBookgeekFrau I was 11ish when MTV first came out as an extra cable you had to order and pay an additional fee for, and it wasn't available everywhere, like where I lived 😤 I think I was 13 when it finally made it to my boondocks town 😂 4d
Amiable I‘m old enough to remember when MTV first came on the airwaves, and sitting on the floor with my sister watching music videos for hours. 3d
AmyG I was there from the beginning. My BF was one of the first to get cable in NJ as Cablevision was based in the town he lived in. My favorite memory…Headbanger‘s Ball. Everyone would be sleeping and I would get up (it was on at Midnight?) and watch in peace. I loved Soundgarden…Rusty Cage video was my favorite. Chris Cornell….be still my heart. 🤣 (edited) 3d
KT1432 I enjoyed MTV for what it was. I actually miss the days when guest appearances on there were the main medium of celebrities connecting to fans. 😅 3d
dabbe MTV first premiered when I was a junior in high school: 1981. Gen X was its target market. First video? “Video Killed the Radio Star.“ They played that and Steve Miller's (the cool one) “Abracadabra“ over and over and over ... and we all watched in absolute awe. Martha Quinn was my favorite dj. #nostalgia 🩶🤍🖤 3d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick A sad day indeed. I was in diapers when MTV launched but it was always there for a long as I remember. I loved watching their early game show Remote Control. I was a huge fan of 120 Minutes & Alternative Nation. I looked forward to their Spring Break specials and the Rock & Jock sports. MTV Sports with Dan Cortese. 😍 The debut of The Real World and Road Rules. So many memories. 2d

👨‍🦲 Does shaving my head count? I do that every 3 weeks or so, depending on how quickly it grows back.
🙏 While COVID-19 rages around me, and other people and colleagues have had to quarantine (usually due to contact with family members with the virus), so far I've avoided getting it.

Ah the days of yore when the M of MTV stood for music and music videos were played in heavy rotation. 📺 During my summer vacation in Chicago I was staying with two older sisters who had cable. With that bonus MTV was constantly on and it was where I first heard of Madonna and seen her Borderline video.

I loved this book, it brought back so many memories. I discovered MTV as a college freshman, and was exposed to so much good music that I never would have known otherwise. When MTV "evolved" into a channel playing The Real World and Jersey Shore, it broke my heart. I know I'm old when I say, remember when MTV actually played music? 5 ????? out of 5
**Warning** If you are offended by curse words, avoid this book, the F Word is used liberally.

TrishB I remember when MTV played music too... 7y

Could not have been any more into this (audio)book. I never saw MTV until 86, I think—house we were renting for a few months came with cable—but once I did see it, I could not look away. So many of the videos in here were/are new to me, too. I mostly only ever knew the hair metal stuff. Of which, this, by Sebastian Bach, is my favorite quote from the book: http://a.co/iqY86v7. Maybe also my favorite quote from ever.

Chessa That quote is 👌💯😂 9y
Zelma I ❤️ Sebastian Bach and I want to read this book so much. I love oral histories! 9y
missjenniferlowe I loved Mtv so much in high school! 9y
