Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies | Andrew DeGraff, A.D. Jameson

What are the 3-5 books that you have read this year that you would most like to see adapted as either a movie or a tv series?
*Adama Cesare's “Clown In A Cornfield“ I read # 2 in March & I feel like the Clown etc books are great material for a new series along the lines of Fear Street/Scream.
*Brenna Thummler's “Sheets“ (I'd like to see an animated version of this to pay tribute to the richness of the original)
*Josh Malerman's “It Waits In The

vivastory Woods“ (This read as a creepy modern day Blair Witch, I'd be curious to see how it would translate to film)
Cliff Chiang “Catwoman: Lonely City“ (Chiang is the Paper Girls artist & this is easily one of the best DC Black Label works I read this year. Such a unique take on the superhero genre & would def be a breath of fresh air)
Chester Himes “Run Man Run“ (Out of all of the entries in the 2 LOA crime volumes, this seemed like it would make (CONT) (edited) 7mo

vivastory the best movie adaptation. With the exception of Marlowe's The Name of the Game is Death). 7mo

I just saw the following article. It's 14 years old, but I found it pretty interesting. I think it popped up due to the forthcoming Robert Eggers' vampire movie. The following is a list of de Toro's top 10 in the Criterion Collection. I def share some favorites w/ him:

I am usually a little behind on new releases, but having just finished “Late Night With The Devil“ I have now watched the 5 movies released this year that I have anticipated the most. Below is my ranking of the 5, all of which I enjoyed:
*Dune 2 (This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. It lived up to my expectations in every way possible & occasionally I think that I might even like it more than the original.)
*Immaculate (CONT)

vivastory (Initially I thought that this would be a poor man's Rosemary's Baby. It's not. It's definitely a religious horror movie & not for the faint of heart, but nothing in it is gratuitous & it shows that horror is as adept at tackling social issues as other genres).
*Civil War (This is one of my least favorite Alex Garland movies, but I still loved how the focus of this was on the journalists & although I have heard complaints that it was too CONT 10mo

vivastory vague regarding the politics involved, I can understand the reason why. I have been itching for a movie for a few years focusing on journalists & this movie scratched that itch)
*Monkey Man (I read an interview w/ Dev Patel saying that this was his most frustrating filmmaking experience. One thing that I appreciated about the movie was that it did not talk down to Western audiences, but the themes of religious extremists hijacking political CONT 10mo

vivastory movements was def easy to understand. Dev Patel was a pleasure to watch as always.
*Late Night With The Devil (The streaming sensation of the year. I enjoyed this comedy/horror film that had a bit more horror than comedy in it. Not sure if it will make my best of the year list but what I found most interesting was that it showed that there is mileage left in the found footage film genre.)
*Sidenote: I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the (CONT) (edited) 10mo

vivastory excellent “Dream Scenario“ starring Nicholas Cage & Julianne Nicholson. This was released last year but I only recently watched it. In my mind this is one of the best A24 movies that I have recently seen. Loved it! 10mo

TrishB My daughter was desperate to see Dune 2 and no one wanted to go. So she went on her own (first time- aged 22). It‘s now her new hobby. She thought it was amazing too. 10mo

batsy I enjoyed Monkey Man, too. I felt like he learned something from how to frame certain shots from being in Slumdog Millionaire (the city scenes). It was like a mix of that and John Wick with Indian politics held up to scrutiny. 10mo

Reggie Have you seen the Hell House LLCs? They released and new origins movie last Halloween that was found footage and holy shit that scared the crap out of me so much so that I had to turn it off and wait until the sun came out to finish it. Glad you liked Late Night. 10mo

*Laura Dern (What a filmography! Here are just a few of my favorites: Wild At Heart, Blue Velvet, Jurassic Park, The Master)
*Amy Adams (Some favorites: Arrival, Sharp Objects, Vice)
*For relatively new talent, no doubt my favorite is Lily Gladstone based off of her incredible performance in Killers of The Flower Moon (the first Native American to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama & the first to ever (CONT)

Honorable mentions-Scream Queens would be a tie between Samara Weaving (for the excellent Ready Or Not & the fantastic Mayhem with Steven Yeun) & Sigourney Weaver (just for Alien). Anna Karina (esp the collaborations w/ JP Belmondo), Tilda Swinton (gloriously weird), Toni Collette, Helena Bonham Carter etc

vivastory @Billypar I did see Inland Empire. I was lucky enough to see the two most recent David Lynch movies when they were first released in theatres. I def need to revisit Inland etc as I recall little of it. 11mo

Billypar It's no Mulholland Drive, but it does have the distinction of being the only movie to make me yell out loud during one of the surprising nightmarish parts (luckily I was at home and not at the theater 😱😆) 11mo

My 7 favorite movies released in '22 (excluding favorite pre '22 releases that I watched this year, that'd be a whole separate list). There are several out that I still want to see (esp. The Fabelmans, Empire of Light & The Menu).
What were your favorite movies of the year?

batsy I've hardly been able to watch any movies this year! I so wanted to catch Nope in the cinemas but missed it. I'm taking a screenshot of this to make sure I watch at least some of these soon 👍🏾 2y

vivastory @batsy There is a great article on lithub about The Northman, written by multiple authors. Some praising it & some critical of the movie. I found it very informative and interesting. I recall it had several spoilers so I'd maybe read it afterwards. 2y

Reggie I haven‘t watched Everything but I want Michelle Yeoh to get an Oscar. I‘ve loved her ever since Crouching Tiger where she plays that really soft yet strong in love woman who in the same movie has one of the best fight scenes ever with Zhang Ziyi. 2y

vivastory @Reggie I will be very upset if she doesn't. I have to say that out of the 7 Everything is probably my favorite. I have recently watched a couple of other movies from the early 2000s that reminded me of Crouching Tiger etc in a good way: Hero & House of Flying Daggers. 2y

Just returned from the theater where I saw dramatist & director Martin McDonagh's latest. I admire his previous movies, esp In Bruges & Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri so this has been one of my most anticipated. Did not disappoint. Farrell & Gleeson are perfect together. The rest of the cast (esp Farrell's previous collaborator Barry Keoghan & Kerry Condon as Farrell's bookish no nonsense sister) shine. In my top 5 released this year.

As they should. Everything Everywhere All At Once remains the best new movie I have seen this year. Funny, strange, innovative & strangely moving. Wouldn't have been nearly as memorable without Yeoh's performance

1) I love going to the movies! I only go for ones that I'm really excited about, but it's always one of my most anticipated activities. I also enjoy live music, but haven't been since the pandemic.
2) Just on Litsy. I tend to skip past reviews of my most anticipated until I have read the book. I have thought about buying a subscription to Kirkus as I used to love reading their reviews.
3) My recliner in my living room.

Each map is stunning, There is so much detail in each map.

The essays that accompanied each map were incredibly insightful in its analysis.They were easy to read, concise, and flowed nicely.

My issue with this book is the size of the maps. Even though they take up a whole page, the maps are still too small to fully appreciate.

Together, the essays and the maps create a beautiful book that will make you want to re-watch the movies.
