Last Rituals
Last Rituals | Yrsa Sigurdardottir
At a university in Reykjavk, the body of a young German student is discovered, his eyes cut out and strange symbols carved into his chest. Police waste no time in making an arrest, but the victim's family isn't convinced that the right man is in custody. They ask Thra Gudmundsdttir, an attorney and single mother of two, to investigate. It isn't long before Thra and her associate, Matthew Reich, uncover the deceased student's obsession with Iceland's grisly history of torture, execution, and witch hunts. But there are very contemporary horrors hidden in the long, cold shadow of dark traditions. And for two suddenly endangered investigators, nothing is quite what it seems . . . and no one can be trusted.

Obviously I needed to start another series.... But this was quite great. If you like the murder mystery/noir genre. And my book club is talking about doing an Iceland trip. So I'm back to reading books in this setting. It's trip prep, right?

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

kspenmoll Have you read Ragnar Jonasson‘s series set in Iceland? Definitely recommend. 2y
vlwelser @kspenmoll I think I read a couple. I need to dive deeper into those. Great recommendation! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I've always thought it would be fun to visit Iceland!! It looks so beautiful!! 2y
vlwelser @TheAromaofBooks it's awesome. And the Northern Lights are stunning. I'm going again because it's great and I'm sick of being stuck at home. 2y

Although it starts out slowly, I enjoyed Last Rituals, but then I‘m a big fan of Scandinavian crime fiction. This is the first of the Thora Gudmundsdottir mysteries, and unlike some, I liked her character, although I found Matthew Reich flat.

After a young student is found brutally murdered, solving the crime leads the duo to ancient tales of witch trials and current a attempts to practice horrible rituals.

A fine, complicated story.

I kept waiting for the suspense to show up but it never did. I loved the atmosphere and the amount of history included in the story, but overall it was pretty boring. The characters didn‘t have any redeeming qualities, the motive behind the murder was a mystery up till the last page and even then it still didn‘t seem to be worth reading the 334 pages for. The plot was slow and moved in circles and two characters held all the answers, if only 👇🏻

RainyDayReading The main character thought to talk to them first. It seemed like they weren‘t allowed to find out anything for themselves. They were just handed information because they would just spin their wheels getting no where otherwise. I think too much was spent in trying to shock the reader in regards to the nature of the victim and not enough oomph was given to the plot. Just boring. 5y
RainyDayReading Also the random bits of the main characters home life thrown in their to....what....make her more likeable? In reviews on Goodreads people seemed to enjoy those pieces but I honestly couldn‘t stand them. They added nothing but more pages. Sigh. I have a lot of frustration when it comes to this book 😅 5y

Been doing okay as far as this week goes for #bfc. The weather hasn‘t been great so I‘ve substituted walking outside with standing and watching tv or just wandering aimlessly around the house much to the confusion of the dogs. Only had one day where I didn‘t get my 3 meals in again due to traveling. I don‘t think I finished any books...started 3 but haven‘t finished any. Hoping to be better this week. #fitwizards @Clwojick @wanderinglynn

Sweettartlaura I was gonna ask 🙂. I‘m sitting in Tacoma looking at this pic, thinking 🤔 Heyyyyy, I know that mountain 🏔♥️ 5y
Clwojick Such a stunning photo! And you‘re doing great! Keep it up 🙌🏻 5y
Hooked_on_books Gorgeous. Puget Sound is a beautiful place (though my autocorrect tried to make it Piglet Sound 😂). 5y
wanderinglynn Great photo! And the weather has been rainy this week. I didn't get my steps in either because of the weather. But it sounds like you still did well with your meals. 🙌 And hopefully, the weather is going to be better this week. 👍 5y

My favorite part of finishing a book is picking the next one - even though I can never decide! 😂 #TBR #booknerdproblems

Think I'll pick one of these... What do you think?

MinDea I read the dark dark woods. It is good. I have been wanting to read Girls in the Castle. I vote that one! 7y
Ms.Story What @MinDea said 👍🏻 Looking forward to your review! 😀 7y
underthebelljar @MinDea @Ms.Story That's the one I was leaning toward the most! It'll be up next once I finish some library holds (they always come in at the same time...) 7y

On its way back to the library unfinished. I felt the writing left a lot to be desire that I didn't care to find out who done it. Here are better written mysteries out there to waste my time on this.

About 70 pages in. I want to like the book. I like the plot idea. I like the setting. But it is not at all very subtle. And of those 70 pages less than half seems necessary to the story or character development. To me it's like how not to write a crime novel. But I will slave on in the hopes it gets better.

A great start to the series. Thora is wryly amusing, and the gruesomeness of the murder is not dwelt upon for longer than necessary. This was actually the second book I read in the series, but it is good enough to start with if you like to read series in order 😉

This weekend's stack from used book store in Shibuya. Just finished Last Rituals, translated from the Icelandic. I have this feeling the voice is probably a bit wittier and ironic in the original. What next for Sunday evening? Saving Full Dark House for last as I enjoy Christopher Fowler so much!

The book is advertised as: "A tale of secret symbols, medieval witchcraft and modern murder." And it's true!
An Icelandic lawyer helps investigate the murder and mutilation of a witchcraft-obsessed student in the history department of Reykjavik university.
