The Meme Machine
The Meme Machine | Susan Blackmore
9 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Any theory deserves to be given its best shot, and that is what Susan Blackmore has given the theory of the meme I am delighted to recommend her book.' Richard Dawkins Humans are extraordinary creatures, with the unique ability among animals to imitate and so copy from one another ideas, habits, skills, behaviours, inventions, songs, and stories. These are all memes, a term first coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 in his book The Selfish Gene. Memes, like genes, are replicators, and this enthralling book is an investigation of whether this link between genes and memes can lead to important discoveries about the nature of the inner self. Confronting the deepest questions about our inner selves, with all our emotions, memories, beliefs, and decisions, Susan Blackmore makes a compelling case for the theory that the inner self is merely an illusion created by the memes for the sake of replication. 'Anyone who hopes-or fears- that memetics will become a science of culture will find this surefooted exploration of the prospects a major eye-opener.' Daniel Dennett

I often hate this! When you have over 1000 books how do you decide what to read!

How do others deal with this?

MicrobeMom I feel Ariel's pain! 😂 5y
Dolly Choosing a book to read should be a joyous occasion but I‘m fearful I‘ll close the wrong one. Also I want to read them all at once! Choosing one means turning down (again) all the others. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Reviewsbylola Sometimes I‘m at a loss. 😂 5y

BeansPage #MakeMeReadIt my friend 😉 5y
riversong153 Unless there‘s something I‘ve been dying to read I just pick up something off my shelf. Something that sounds interesting. Sometimes I finish it sometimes I don‘t. 5y
Mamashep I often just browse my shelves waiting for the book that wants to be read the most to send my a sign. 5y
Sophia1 It‘s heartbreaking actually!!! I usually browse my shelves for at least ten minutes before choosing another one 😂😂 thankfully Litsy and you guys help a lot. #HardDecisions 5y
Oblomov26 Oh I know this feeling 5y
Velvetfur I'm at that stage right now! I've just finished a book which finished my reading challenge, so now I'm looking at the other 2 challenges to choose my next book 😊 5y
Gezemice I obsess over my tbr and regularly have a tbr-next and tbr-soon shelf. Next usually is stuff on my bedside table or currently checked out from the library. I usually try to pick a very different book than the last one. I don‘t always pick from those, but it helps when I feel stuck. There are also some people who use tbr jars. If you have them on Goodreads and you have them numbered, you could use a random number generator. 5y
Lmstraubie I'm such a mood reader so I end up choosing based on how I'm feeling. Sometimes that means reading a magazine to cleanse my pallet. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I look to see what you enjoyed reading and then I read one of those books! Works for me every time! 5y
Areader2 You know what sucks too, when you finish a book in a series, do you go right to the next one in the series when your other tbr books are waiting?!? Ugh I just agonized over that😬 5y
alysonimagines The longer my TBR gets, the more of a mood reader I become. Since there are always too many books and too little time, I say life is short and you might as well read whatever you feel like! (Although I often feel like reading ten different books, so choosing can still be hard.) 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m a mood reader, so I‘ll just pick one which strikes my fancy then. There‘s just sort of a guide..if I‘ve just finished a heavy or heartbreaking read, I‘ll look for something which is not, maybe a mystery of psychological thriller. 🙂 5y
CampbellTaraL Place several holds through the library and time it poorly so that they all come in at once and you have no choice but to simply go for it. >.> 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I have a book Jar but I haven't been brave enough to use it yet. 😄 5y

#meinameme #secretsantagoespostal @hermyknee

I couldn't decide between my favorite Community moments, so here are two quotes that pretty much tell you who I am in a nutshell. I relate to Britta on a spiritual level.

hermyknee 😂 I love it! 6y
MarriedtoMrT I love Community! We still quote it. 6y
LA_Mead I love Community! Such a funny show. 6y
