Embroideries
Embroideries | Marjane Satrapi
From the bestselling author of Persepolis comes this humorous and enlightening look at the sex lives of Iranian women. Embroideries gathers together Marjane's tough-talking grandmother, stoic mother, glamorous and eccentric aunt and their friends and neighbours for an afternoon of tea-drinking and talk. Naturally, the subject turns to loves, sex and vagaries of men...

I really liked this one, I wanted to read more graphic novels and this was it. It follows the different stories of Iranian women regarding their marriages and relationships. I loved the various opinions regarding topics as virginity or marriage from the members of the family and how what they went through changed their points of view regarding each topic. The stories they share were hilarious, I laughed the entire time. A cozy and funny read :)

The women of an extended Iranian family "ventilate their hearts" over glasses of tea. In other words, they talk about sex. It's sharp, funny and subversive. (And put a different spin on my own tea break, that's for sure!)

I love Satrapi‘s art and her honest stories. Publishing date for my copy is 2005; Persepolis 1 & 2 in 2003 & 2004. After my Litsy time tonight, I‘m going to see if I can figure out what this talented person is currently up to.

This was my #BookSpin pick for March. Thank you for hosting, @TheAromaofBooks !

A truly interesting read! A deeply personal and honest look into sex and romance in the lives of Iranian women. Definitely recommend, even if you haven‘t read Satrapi‘s memoir.

My ‘E‘ entry for the #LitsyAtoZ2019 challenge by @BookishMarginalia

Satrapi put together a lovely vignette focusing on a gathering women coming together to have tea. The illustrative style pairs perfectly with the raw, unpolished narrative. It‘s a book about a bunch of women venting and sharing their personal and political thoughts and it‘s fantastic.

Highly recommended.

There‘s something I really love about stories that focus on small moments.

hermyknee I‘ve loved all of the books I‘ve read by Marjane ♥️ 5y
MoniqueChristine @hermyknee I read Persepolis years ago and loved it. I‘m planning to reread it again this year, but this is my first time reading her other work and I loved it as well ❤️ 5y

Hi guys. That the Supreme Court upheld his trans military ban has made me feel super ick and barfy. So I'm reading a good graphic novel and trying not to spiral into thinking about how this approval will trigger even more legal trans and genderqueer discrimination & exclusion. 😞

What graphic novel and/or comic are you reading right now? Have any recommendations?

ColleenIsReading I just finished Essex County by Jeff Lemire. Very moving interweaving of ordinary characters and their stories. Plus lots of hockey 🏒 because Canada! 5y
Hooked_on_books I‘m disgusted by the decision as well. I can only hope that there were terrible things that happened in this country in the past which were later turned around, and hopefully that will be the case this time. 5y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve been rereading this in preparation for the movie. 5y
Weaponxgirl It‘s a disgrace of a decision but hopefully with people fighting against this it will change in the future. I‘m so sorry this happened 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I just don‘t get it at all. Men can join the military. Women can join the military. Ergo, people can join the military. The ignorance is staggering. I would think anyone wanting to sign up for such a difficult and dangerous job would be welcome and thanked. Idiots. 5y

Really fast, funny read - spend an afternoon at tea with Marjane, her grandmother and their friends as they talk frankly about sex, love and expectations. I loved Persepolis and this was just as wonderful. A brief peek into another culture.

You can talk about the issues and the stigma women face even with humour. One funny book discussing deep prejudices faced by women in most societies. This is definitely worth a read

Hey 👋🏻 Are you ready for Persepolis? For the powerful discussion and understanding the Iranian culture we suggest check out this 👆🏻 tiny graphic novel by Satrapi as well. You understand deeper women‘s role in Iran and the especially Satrapi‘s grandmother character.

Embroideries is an absolute gem (especially after being so disappointed by Satrapi's The Sigh). It is like sitting in on an amazing gossip session with your loved ones, with a few universal experiences, and a few specifically Iranian experiences. Some of it was sad or cringey, but it was mostly lighthearted and fun.

I loved this graphic novel; as engaging and sharp as #Persepolis with the wisdom and heartwrench and humor of mothers that we can all recognize.

My #24in48 #readathon intermission books have thus far been on a theme - me searching out Satrapi's previous titles 📚
Embroideries is a wonderfully surprising eavesdropping on a group of Iranian women gossiping over tea. Their varying (and hilarious) views on men, sex, faking virginity, men (again😉) and the like is shocking and hilarious. The art brings them to life as much as their wild stories and opinions. Delightful ladies FULL of opinions.

I love Satrapi's illustrations, but didn't love the story in this one as much as Persepolis. I do love learning about the culture in Iran through Satrapi's witty observations.
