Jack the Ripper: Case Closed
Jack the Ripper: Case Closed | Gyles Brandreth
9 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
London. 1894. 'I am not a detective, chief constable.' 'No, but you are a poet, a freemason and a man of the world. All useful qualifications for the business in hand.' So says Police Chief Macnaghten to Oscar Wilde, in a Chelsea drawing room in the company of Arthur Conan Doyle. The business they are gathered to discuss is none other than the case of Jack the Ripper, the most notorious murderer in England. And thus the three men set out to solve one of the world's most famous mysteries - the ultimate truth about the identity of Jack the Ripper. Case Closed is Arthur Conan Doyle's account of the events of 1894, the year of the return of Jack the Ripper. Based on Oscar Wilde's real-life friendship with Conan Doyle and the extraordinary but little-known fact that in 1894 the detective in charge of the Jack the Ripper investigations was Oscar Wilde's neighbour in Tite Street, Chelsea, this is a revelatory and gripping detective story, combining the intrigue of a classic murder mystery with a witty and compelling portrait of one of the greatest characters of the Victorian age.

I felt it flagged a little in the second half but enjoyed Brandreth's lively style, his evocation of the period and his multitude of literary references. Oscar and Doyle echo Holmes and Watson but with characters of their own too. A good pick @jenniferw88!
@Cathythoughts I'll try to send this tomorrow. Hopefully it will make its way through the Christmas/New Year backlog on time! #groupv #lmpbc

Cathythoughts Thanks Moray ! Sounds good. Don‘t worry about getting it out if you are busy .... I‘ll be happy to receive it when I do ... I‘ve started Little , it‘s very good ! It‘s different from most books I‘ve read ... ♥️👍🏻 6y

Cinfhen I‘m interested in learning more about this notorious killer 6y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen this book is fiction I'm afraid - it's book #7 in Gyles's Oscar Wilde series. It's still a good read but if you want facts it's not the book you want! 😂 6y

Hi @Cathythoughts @Moray_Reads & @Lel2403 I was just wondering if I could swap my #lmpbc book for the tagged one? I'm reading it now and finding quite a lot of things I want to write a comment about. I'm also aware that I'm running out of time to do November's book due to my hospital stay and I think this way might be easier. If you've already read the book, I'll stick to The Oxford Murders.

Cathythoughts I hope you are feeling ok. I am positively happy to read The this tagged book ... looks great 👍🏻❤️ 6y
Moray_Reads It looks interesting, I'm happy to read this instead. Hope you're doing well x 6y
Libby1 I hope you‘re feeling well. Take care. ❤️🌈🌸 6y
Lel2403 I‘m happy to read this too....I‘m about to send mine (Seventeen) off, as I‘m due some surgery soon and thought it best to do it now 📖 @jenniferw88 (edited) 6y

I'm most excited about the Margaret Atwood book, I've been wanting to pick The Handmaids Tale or Alias Grace after watching the series but they're always out on loan!

Jack the Ripper: Case Closed, Gyles Brandreth
Sons of the Blood, Robyn Young
Hag-Seed, Margaret Atwood
