When Eva's film star sister Katrina dies, she leaves California and returns to Cornwall, where they spent their childhood summers, to scatter Katrina's ashes and in doing so return her to the place where she belongs. But Eva must also confront the ghosts from her own past, as well as those from a time long before her own. For the house where she so often stayed as a child is home not only to her old friends the Halletts, but also to the people who had lived there in the eighteenth century. When Eva finally accepts that she is able to slip between centuries and see and talk to the inhabitants from hundreds of years ago, she soon finds herself falling for Daniel Butler, a man who lived - and died - long before she herself was born. Eva begins to question her place in the present, and in laying her sister to rest, comes to realise that she too must decide where she really belongs, choosing between the life she knows and the past she feels so drawn towards.

I found a few of Kearsley‘s books in a thrift store recently and immediately snatched them up. I have meant to read more of her books but somehow never get around to them. A historical fiction, time travel book with descriptions of Cornwall that made to me add it to my list of places to visit, this book was everything I wanted in my lazy Saturday. I found the ending a bit lacking but overall it fit my mood perfectly.

robinb I‘ll have to add this one to my Kearsley TBR. Thanks! 3y
TiredLibrarian I've also heard people with similar bookish tastes rave about Kearsley. One of these days I'll have to check her out. 3y

I am so in love with this book! I think I say this about all of Susanna Kearsley novels but this one stole my heart. With much of her books, this story takes place in the present and in the past. I don't want to give too much away but I will say this, if you loved the Outlander series, you will love this book.

I would recommend this book for anyone seeking a romantic adventure.

📖📚 Happy Reading! 📚📖

annahenke I also adore this one! 4y
MrsBibliophile I love all of her books but this one literally made my heart melt 4y

Have you ever read a book and instantly thought that they stole the idea from an earlier author? I'm pretty sure this is Outlander...

Slow at first and then Eva finds Daniel in the past and this is a great time travel story. This book is the little sister story of Outlander!:)

A pleasant time slip story which started off a bit slow but made up for it in the final chapters. I always enjoy historical stories with the time slip element and this one was no exception.

Crazeedi I enjoyed this one too 5y
Melissa_J This isn‘t my favourite of Kearsley‘s books, but I liked it well enough. 5y
Zelma This is my favorite Kearsley book. She is an author I am reading through slowly so I don‘t run out of her books. 5y

A very sweet story. If you like historical fiction or time travel romance then this is a great read. It starts pretty slow, and the ending felt a little abrupt, but overall it was very enjoyable.

My six days off went by way too fast 😫 Spending this last precious day lazily. Took a nice long walk as the sun is finally out after days of snow and hiding behind clouds. Now snuggled up with a blanket, tea and book. Should do some cleaning but 🤷🏻‍♀️ this is much better.

If you like historical fiction with some romance and a little twist of time travel, you might like to give this book a try. The audio is pretty great, too, if you need to use a credit or something. 😉

vkois88 I love Susanna Kearsley! 5y
VeganCleopatra Been needing to read this one for years and none of my libraries have the audio either. 😞 Did you read A Desperate Fortune? I'm thinking of making that my next read but the reviews are all over the place. 5y
sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra I think this was one I got from Audible in a sale a while back. It was my first of hers, but I do want to read more. Have you read any of her others? 5y

sprainedbrain @vkois88 this was my first of hers! Which do you recommend I read next? 5y
VeganCleopatra Yes, many. My favorites are the Slains ones...The Winter Sea and The Firebird. 5y
sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra Thank you! I know which ones to read next. 😃 5y
vkois88 I read Winter Sea and adored it. My mom really liked this one 5y
sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra Neither of my libraries have any of her books on audio... but The Winter Sea is part of the audible 2 for 1 sale so I snagged that one. It‘s going to be a good day! Lol 5y
VeganCleopatra Nice! None of my libraries have any of her books in audio which is so frustrating. I've never listened to the books in audio so I hope they're good! 5y

This was my first book by this author, and as soon as I was done, I added all of her other books to my wish list. A very cool mix of history and time travel, with a nice romance, too. Loved it!

Cinfhen I‘ve seen the author‘s name but haven‘t read any of her work. Thanks for sharing. 5y
Crazeedi I've read several of hers, mostly enjoyed 5y

This is a light, sweet book, with enough history to suck me in and the time travel element to keep it interesting. Beautifully written: the setting and the atmosphere of the whole novel are gorgeously done. It‘s a relatively short book, and a little more character development and time spent on the love story might have given it more impact, but I still loved this book.

They can‘t all be Outlander, I suppose. 😍😂

Started this audiobook this morning and got sucked right in... not sure how I feel about it, but I can‘t stop listening. 🤷🏻‍♀️

JSW I love this author. My favorite is 6y
sprainedbrain @JSW I‘m liking her style. Thanks for the recommendation! 6y
JamieArc I love this author too. Not so much for the plots, though they do suck me in too, but for the setting. The place becomes a character itself, and I feel like I‘m there. 6y

Mehso-so

Meh. The writing is lovely but it took forever for anything slightly interesting to happen. Lots of telling rather than showing & the romance was rather unconvincing. I've found every Kearsley book I've read to be somewhat dull or boring. I only read this one because it was the book club selection. #romantsy #orsbc

SilversReviews LOVE her books. 7y
Dogearedcopy I absolutely agree with you! I only read one (Ghost of a Roman soldier at a Scottish archaeological dig) but it is so tame and disappointing that I've never felt inclined to read anything more of hers :-/ (edited) 7y
Christy2318 @Dogearedcopy The Shadowy Horses is the best of the books I‘ve read by her so that sounds like a good decision on your part! 7y

Delicious, romantic fluff that got me happily to and from Chicago on the train. Set in Cornwall it's a natural choice for Poldark fans (although it's set a bit earlier, historically), it has a Somewhere in Time-esque time travel love story, and some Binchy/Pilcher Aga saga domestic detail. Kearsley writes really well, and the audio version was lovely.

As always, Susanna Kearsley doesn't disappoint. Her blend of history, romance, and the supernatural is spot on and each of her books that I have read has been a delight.

Met Suzanna Kearsley at Murder by the Book in Houston, TX. It's an awesome indie bookstore that gets great talented authors visiting all year long. I've read everything Ms. Kearsley has written and enjoyed each word. The Rose Garden is a particular favorite of mine.
