The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater
The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater: Essays on Crafting | Alanna Okun
15 posts | 13 read | 25 to read
People who craft know things. They know how to transform piles of yarn into sweaters and scarves. They know that some items, like woolen bikini tops, are better left unknit. They know that making a hat for a newborn baby isnt just about crafting something small but appreciating the beginnings of life, which sometimes helps make peace with the endings. They know that if you knit your boyfriend a sweater, your relationship will most likely be over before the last stitch. Alanna Okun knows that crafting keeps her anxiety at bay. She knows that no one will ever be as good a knitting teacher as her beloved grandmother. And she knows that even when we cant control anything else, we can at least control the sticks, string, and fabric right in front of us. Okun lays herself bare and takes readers into the parts of themselves they often keep hidden. Yet at the same time she finds humor in the daily indignities all crafters must face (like when you catch the dreaded Second Sock Syndrome and cant possibly finish the second in a pair). Okun has written a book that will speak to anyone who has said to themselves, or to everyone within earshot, I made that.

I think these essays or life through the lens of crafting are probably too sweet for me, but it does fit both today‘s prompts… #curse #sweater

A very sweet collection of essays about crafting. I enjoyed how much of herself she shared. I have similar familial ties with the origins of my crafting and was also very close to my grandparents, so I felt a lot of those essays deeply. A lovely, quick read.

MeganAnn I had SO much fun making this for you! I knew I had to do something “science-y” 😆 I‘m so happy you like it!! 6y

CampbellTaraL I love this so much! Amazing work. 6y
LibrarianRyan That is so cool. @MeganAnn my free hand embroidery never comes out that well. 6y
Daisydo Beautiful! 6y
readordierachel That is absolutely fantastic! 6y
Valink @MeganAnn this is awesome! 6y
MeganAnn @LibrarianRyan aww thank you!! It takes some practice to make the stitches behave how you want. I usually draw it out free hand on paper then transfer it to the fabric with tracing paper so I have my lines in place to follow. And I pull out any less than perfect stitches along the way to redo them 😳 (edited) 6y
MeganAnn @Valink thank you so much!! 😘 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Awesome 👏 6y
tammysue Ooh cool! 😍 6y
LibrarianRyan @MeganAnn the last time I did General embroidery I was doing butterflies for a quilt. There were sooooo many French knots. Ughhhhh. Haven't don't anything since. But I have some a friends mom started so I shall finish those. Eventually. 6y
CSeydel @MeganAnn I am so nervous about the elaborate detail in the lettering pattern! I‘m pretty much a beginner and it looks so intricate. 6y
Craftylikefox That is so amazing and gorgeous!!! Makes me want to get back into embroidery!! 6y
CSeydel @Craftylikefox Well, if you really mean it, @vkois88 is hosting a cross-stitch Christmas ornament swap! Check it out 😉 6y
Craftylikefox @cseydel like I need more encouragement haha 😂 6y
MeganAnn @CSeydel it‘s not as hard as it looks. I promise!! This is a really helpful guide for stitching letters: https://www.needlenthread.com/2009/10/hand-embroidery-lettering-and-text.html. It doesn‘t have to be perfect - that‘s the beauty of something hand lettered and stitched! Once you start, I know you can totally do it 😉 (edited) 6y
vkois88 @Craftylikefox yes! Join us 😊 Cross stitch is less intimidating than embroidery 6y
Craftylikefox @vkois88 I have dabbled in both and agree Cross stitch is less intimidating! 6y
vkois88 @Craftylikefox feel free to join in the fun with the X-mas ornament swap 😊 6y
CSeydel @MeganAnn Thanks!! I think you are underestimating my essential derpy-ness. But I also have a lot of patience and will keep on picking out and re-doing stitches until I get them right 😁😉 6y

Finally taking a photo of my spectacular #makerswap box from @MeganAnn Picture does not do justice to the stunning cross-stitch (which I am calling “the science woman”) but it is really gorgeous 😍 The wood bookmark is silky smooth, I just keep touching it 😂. I can‘t wait to try the cross stitch pattern. I love the hand lettering pattern and I hope I can do it justice!!! The fabric you included is perfect for the quote! I love everything!

CSeydel Also, I have seen this book before & even picked it up a time or two, but never bought it. Looking forward to reading it! 6y
LeahBergen How wonderful 😍 6y
MeganAnn I‘m so glad you like everything!! I almost bought a copy of the book for myself so you‘ll have to let me know how it is when you read it. 6y

#PickFiveFriday is finally back! It was important for me to get at least one more selection out this month. This month is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth. It was hard to narrow this down to five and especially since there are are others I have picked in the past that would fit the criteria (Jenny Lawson or Hygge for sure). I hope these books help you as much as they have helped me. Details for each pick at the link in my profile 😁.
