After Me Comes the Flood
After Me Comes the Flood | Sarah Perry
18 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
Longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award 2014 One hot summer's day, John Cole decides to leave his life behind. He shuts up the bookshop no one ever comes to and drives out of London. When his car breaks down and he becomes lost on an isolated road, he goes looking for help, and stumbles into the grounds of a grand but dilapidated house. Its residents welcome him with open arms - but there's more to this strange community than meets the eye. They all know him by name, they've prepared a room for him, and claim to have been waiting for him all along. As nights and days pass John finds himself drawn into a baffling menagerie. There is Hester, their matriarchal, controlling host; Alex and Claire, siblings full of child-like wonder and delusions; the mercurial Eve; Elijah - a faithless former preacher haunted by the Bible; and chain-smoking Walker,...

Does anyone know why these words are underlined? It‘s just a regular paperback version....

I‘m thinking it would normally be italicized, but it‘s not 🤔 - like you would see in a large print book, but I‘m not sure.

Crazeedi I've never seen before, no idea 3y
Reggie Yeah, Stephen Chbosky‘s Imaginary Friend in paperback did this. I think it‘s just for emphasis. Like the way they would say it when they talk. 3y

There was just so much going on. A part of me wants to try and reread it again because Essex Serpent was so good! The flipping back and forth from the journal and third person I found unnecessary and the part about him using the other gentleman stuff. Felt weird

I'm writing this in a stranger's room on a broken chair at an old school desk.

I actually enjoyed this one. It wasn‘t a happy book, and there was a lot going on, but it was good.

This Goodreads giveaway win arrived today. I really loved Sarah Perry‘s latest book, Melmoth. I thought it was very different. I‘m looking forward to reading this one, her debut novel. Thank you Goodreads! #Goodreads #giveawaywinner

This book had a lot going on. I don't know if I liked it.

Also I was using this postcard as a bookmark. It came with an awesome movie that I bought.

Watch the movie 🎥. Maybe skip the book 📖.

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. Yes, when I was studying and had no time for extracurricular readings and a few times when I‘ve had bad personal problems

2. Graduating or getting over the personal problems

3. Ooh any city that I don‘t know well - I love London and New York but have read so much set there, I‘d rather explore Lagos or Manila.

4. It took me ages to think but tagged! And I always love American editions more than English ones

Eggs #4 looks fascinating! 5y

1. Love this book and the cover 💖
2. Actual valentines I have an evening class but on the 13th me and Matt are having a movie and pizza night in together (we‘re broke from booking Paris together yesterday 😕) and on the 12th my long distance BFF and I are doing a Netflix date
3. orange makes me look like a Victorian invalid
4. Alexander Francis - I kinda love it, Oxford pimms on the lawn vibes

TrishB I love the cover of this book too! Didn‘t love the book though. 5y
Emilymdxn @TrishB I think the book meant a lot to me cause the poem it‘s based around is the one I spent my whole degree working on a translation of 5y

I'm not quite sure what to make of this, Sarah Perry's debut novel. It's beautifully written in a lingering, haunting way, but with a protoganist I didn't particularly care for and a random assortment of characters who you only get to know in brief glimpses. There's enough of a mystery to keep me reading to the end, and I can't resist a wonderfully turned-out phrase, which Perry delivers fairly frequently! I much prefer The Essex Serpent, though.

Reading articles about books. And so the tbr grows... www.guardian.co.uk/books

Moray_Reads Sarah Perry is fabulous. Her writing is wonderful and she's also one of the best readers I've had the pleasure of listening to. I'd love her to narrate get own books! 6y
charl08 @Moray_Reads I think all the hype (?) last year (pr the year before) about the Serpent put me off. Perverse of me, I appreciate. Have seen beautiful pbk copies in the shops, so now tempted. 6y

I love The Essex Serpent so much, I went back and bought Perry‘s debut on eBay. It arrived with gummy patches on the covers from price tags. I whipped out my GooGone and buffed this book right up!

RebelReader I use GooGone on books too! 👍 6y

@RealLifeReading
Absolutely love the cover of this book, the book not so much, a rare one I bailed on.

Literaryunicorn But it looks so promising! ☹️ 7y
Moray_Reads Oh, I liked this one but not as much as the Essex Serpent 🙁 7y
TrishB @Literaryunicorn I know 😔 @Moray_Reads That's why I haven't read the Essex Serpent yet as I thought maybe it was me and the author! 7y
Moray_Reads @TrishB they're very different and even though I like After Me I was impressed with how much better Perry's writing is in the Essex Serpent 7y
TrishB @Moray_Reads thanks 😀 I will probably give it a go because it looks like something I should like! 7y

Started out really good and creepy. But then it felt like it didn't develop at all and I felt nothing for the characters at all!! Gave up half way through! Still love the cover though.

Next off the tbr pile! I don't even remember buying this, someone must have recommended it! Anyone read it?

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled No, but it looks really good!! 8y
KellyTurner I found it a bit slow- read it for a book group. Some great descriptions though. Hope you enjoy it! 8y
