The Flying Troutmans
The Flying Troutmans: A Novel | Miriam Toews
21 posts | 19 read | 10 to read
Meet the Troutmans. Hatties boyfriend has just dumped her, her sister Mins back in the psych ward, and Mins kids, Logan and Thebes, are not talking and talking way too much, respectively. Then theres the past, in which Min tried to kill Hattie once and to kill herself a lot, in which Min threw the kids father out of the house, in which Hattie dropped out of school, in which Logan and his friends kidnapped a friend and drove around town with him in the trunk, and in which Thebes frequently impersonated their insane mom in order to cut class. When Hattie returns to take care of her niece and nephew, shes rapidly freaked out by the realization that the responsibility is in fact far greater than shed expected, and she decides to take the kids in the family van to find their father, last heard to be running an idiosyncratic art gallery in South Dakota. What ensues is a remarkable journey across the United States, as aunt and kids discover one another to be both far crazier and far more normal than any of them thought.

Miriam Toews is a wonderful Canadian author. She really draws you into her characters. I felt like I was on that road trip with this crazy cast of characters. I will try to read more of her books in the future. Making homemade spaghetti sauce and cookies for tonight‘s dinner.

I haven‘t been reading much as dealing with my mental health has been heavy lately. Not sure this is the right book for me right now but I love Toews and #LMPBC so I‘m game to give it a go! A belated thank you to @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego for the generous extra goodies

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I hope you feel better soon ❤️ 4y
Megabooks I‘m sorry you‘ve been going through things. While this is definitely a Towes book, it‘s lighter than the others I‘ve read so 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. Sending positive energy 💜💜 4y

I liked the relationship that evolved with some of the family members, and as a bookclub read it'd evoke a lot of good discussions on mental health. Overall though I found it sad & I have too many questions. I loved Thebes though. 🧡

michellelav It was frustrating to read seeing that the kids deserved so much more. I kept wanting to shout "just let these kids be kids" they have enough on their plate that missing school and taking them across the country was pretty problematic.. Also I didn't enjoy not knowing how it ends.. But other than that I really enjoyed it ?? 4y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @michellelav Exactly, and the entire family is in dire need of some therapy/counseling. I needed some sort of closure in that regard, for at least one of them. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
michellelav @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yes!!!!!!!! As a BSW graduate I saw so many toxic traits I just kept telling myself that they need to talk to a professional! Also the use of the R word kinda turned my stomach.. but I pushed passed cause i knew I wouldn't have time to pick another book so I took it for what it was and just enjoyed the character development (even though I always wanted to know more). I did enjoy the book though! 😊 4y
Jemmygem @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @michellelav so true and I wanted to know what happened. Loved the kids I was bring them to me I‘ll keep them lol eh Michelle 4y

Ok I‘m enjoying the book. BUT common she uses the “R” word way too much. It‘s killing it for me

michellelav Yeah it was hard to get passed but they stop! 😅 4y

Taking a pretty low-key approach to #readathon. Listened to Born a Crime while doing dishes and cleaning the kitchen, now reading a bit of this.

Mini #bookhaul from the library bookstore. I already have this particular beautiful hardcover copy of All My Puny Sorrows, but I love gifting it to people and I couldn‘t pass it up for only $3! Especially because it‘s really expensive through McSweeney‘s. Also, really excited for the other Miriam Toews I haven‘t read yet!

Loved it. I didn't know anything about it going in but now that I'm finished I'm glad I read AMPS first because I think it's better and it's hard not to compare the two. That's not taking anything away from this though. Thebes and Logan are ridiculous and it's funny and melancholy and I love her writing so much and want more.

alilanzetta hi Chris, i loved these two also (TFT & AMPS) and have been looking for novels with a similar feel or style. she‘s pretty unique so i haven‘t found a whole lot, but am wondering if you‘ve read anything you feel is kindred to these. for me so far, some writers whose work feels relatable to hers, at least somewhat, are melissa bank, weike wang, marie-helene bertino, richard brautigan, rachel khong, and eileen myles‘ prose (more so than her poetry). 4y
alilanzetta ps. i just joined litsy so that‘s why i don‘t have any books up yet! 4y

LeahBergen I really like Toews but haven't read this one. It sounds pretty good! 8y
Chris @LeahBergen I've only read AMPS and I loved it. This one was written a few years before that, but seems to cover some of the same ground so far. I like her writing though so I'm okay with that. 8y

Intrigued by the cover when I got this book, but turns out it's very good and entertaining. The story still could be dig deeper, but I love that it's light and a page turner.
