Strange Grace
Strange Grace | Tessa Gratton
Once, a witch made a pact with a devil. The legend says they loved each other, but can the story be trusted at all? Find out in this lush, atmospheric fantasy novel that entwines love, lies, and sacrifice. Long ago, a village made a bargain with the devil: to ensure their prosperity, when the Slaughter Moon rises, the village must sacrifice a young man into the depths of the Devils Forest. Only this year, the Slaughter Moon has risen early. Bound by duty, secrets, and the love they share for one another, Mairwen, a spirited witch; Rhun, the expected saint; and Arthur, a restless outcast, will each have a role to play as the devil demands a body to fill the bargain. But the devil these friends find is not the one they expect, and the lies they uncover will turn their townand their heartsinside out.

Mehso-so

Strange Grace was a great example of how non-heterosexual romance can be done in books, but I didn't find that the plot or characters really stood out in any sort of way. The climax of the book felt underwhelming and almost expected, and I wish that there could have been more to the book that I loved as much as the representation.

A 3.5 read for me on this one but what a book.
As a whole this book has a lot of everything. There is so much to unpack and I'm not sure where to start...

Story wise, it's a lot of interweaving between different POVs, all bringing something different into the overall story while still managing to be heavy in it's tackling of different topics like friendships, love, family, and the differences between them.

Catching up on August reviews!

This book is super, duper strange. There's magic and forest gods and sacrifice and a throuple. I mean, maybe a throuple? I kind of like that the 3 are just linked without making a big deal about it.
It's like a mix of The Lottery and The Village, but with witches and saints. If you're looking for a book that's strangely good, then I can definitely recommend this awesomely unique book!

Clare-Dragonfly A mix of The Lottery and The Village? I‘m in! (Not literally in. I just want to read the book.) 4y

Last book of 2018!

Reminded me of The Raven Boys. Beautiful writing and I loved the characters and the relationships--Arthur was my favorite.

Dragged a bit in the middle, but still an enjoyable way to finish 2018.

Way too confusing, and weird. Maybe the idea generally would have worked but all the details, execution and writing style soured it.

#bookhaul!! Y‘all, I cannot deal with how aesthetically pleasing each of these covers are! 😭

I won a gift card from the lovely #booked2018 ladies and went on amazon to use it, and discovered I had plenty of points to rack up more additional books, because why not? 🤷🏻‍♀️ #noregrets cause these are some of my most anticipated reads! 😍

BarbaraTheBibliophage Yay! That‘s a righteous haul. Enjoy! 😍 6y

A different twist on the #isolatedvillage #inthewoods . Every 7 years occursa #sacrifice so the village can stay #untouched by the world. The tone is dark and wild, just like the woods. The main characters are #rebellious and #supportive of their #bestfriend, who is this year's #chosenone. What follows is as much a story about #growingup as it is about #acceptingresponsibility. #gothic #talesofwarning #talesofbravery and #talesofsacrifice.

So sad and disappointed with this. I pre-ordered it and had been looking forward to it for month, having read and absolutely loved The Queens of Innis Lear earlier this year.
I was expecting beautiful writing, rich world building, vivid scenes and three-dimensional characters.
I got disjointed narration, vague, mostly one-dimensional characters and a confusing story where the work of keeping everyone and everything straight did NOT pay off ☹️

IheartYA Bummer! It WAS high on my TBR. 🙁 6y
Elisa @IheartYA I wouldn‘t want you to give up on it completely, because you might enjoy it more than I did! Some people did. I just wish I hadn‘t paid full price for a beautiful hardcover that is *not* going on my “keepers” shelf! It‘s frustrating, because the cover is SO beautiful, too 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
IheartYA Nope. Nope. Horrible. What a mess!! 6y
Elisa @IheartYA so you read it and were horribly disappointed too?? I kept alternating between sad and mad 🙈 6y

Things continue to be rough at home, with the stepkids over, and partner drama, but yesterday‘s #bookhaul made me feel like my birthday came a few days early. Books made everything a little bit better...

brilliantglow I always feel better after buying some new books. Hopefully everything calms down at home though. 6y

A dark fairy tale for the 21st century.

Every seven years in the town of Three Graces, in exchange for prosperity, the best young man is sent into the Devil's Forest to face the devil and almost always a terrible death, until this year when three teens — two young men and a young woman with their own complicated loyalties, loves, and motives — run into the forest and discover secrets that will turn the town and their hearts inside out...

IheartYA Sounds like an old episode of Supernatural. 7y
