Serpentine | Laurell K Hamilton
Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight... A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties... In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes. When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...

I have a hard time deciding what to say about the Anita Blake books these days. I still keep reading the newer ones, albeit I've been behind on them a long time, but I think it's because I just don't enjoy them as much as the older ones. I like the action more than the relationship stuff that took over for a while and hold on to the hope for that.

Larkken Oh man, I recently tried to get back into these from the beginning via audiobook and failed on book 3 - so much smoldering by so many different men! Plus, Jean Claude was annoying on audio, so many “mon petites” 😂 2y

With Halloween upon us, I decided to finally go back and try to catch up where I'd left off on the Anita Blake series. Vampires and were-animals seemed appropriate to the day, after all.

I also kicked off the day by watching some fresh apple cider being pressed (pictured above), buying a gallon of it, and getting some delicious fried cakes to go with it.

Happy Halloween & Blessed Samhain to all! 🎃

Bk8 of April is done! I guess trashy vampire/mystery/romance novels are what I felt like reading🤷🏻‍♀️ Bk26, I believe, in the Anita Blake series, it actually was better than the last couple of her novels have been. Yes, there was still a lot of gratuitous sex but nowhere near as much as some of her latest books have had, which was an improvement for sure. There was more of Anita as crime fighter which was also welcome. Not perfect but not bad👍

BehindthePages I had to give up on this series after Skin Trade. I wish she would go back to her early writing. 4y

I was having trouble settling on a book, I‘ve tried reading the rest of The Good Nurse but it‘s too depressing right now, also Contagion by Robin Cook which is too close to reality, so I thought I‘d try a trashy vampire/mystery/romance with lots of orgies. Seems to have done the trick! Are you having problems concentrating on a book atm, if so what do you recommend for breaking that funk?

DieAReader Freebies on my Kobo (trashy romance or some good old fashioned smut) or Harlequin Romance novel seem to be my go to when I‘m stuck. 😉🤪 4y

Put the number of the book somewhere! Anywhere! So annoying to think you‘re starting a new series just to figure out you‘ve picked up somewhere in the middle with no clue who all these people are. Haha

NeonKnight Yes please! I feel silly when I‘m standing in a bookstore trying to google a book to see where in the series it falls. 5y

I liked this one better than the last one of hers I read. I felt that in the previous book the personal issues could have been trimmed down to better serve the plot. This one also has a lot of the relationships but it makes more sense in this context given they are going to the wedding of a friend.

Like most later Anita Blake books, this latest story is 1/3 dull and plodding exposition, 1/3 self-indulgent introspection which emphasizes how awful and artificial the characters are, and 1/3 actual new story.

Ok now most of the books are not that great, this one was awesome! I flew through it! There were metaphysic things and police work and less hard core sex scenes which is what I prefer. Just so good!

The Four Horseman ride again in this one. And that excited me, because I love all of their stories. The books with Anita, Bernardo, Edward, and Olaf working together are action packed, contain less sex, and more crime, and are always my faves. This one fit that pattern as well, and it does mark a steady improvement in the series; but I worry it's a case of too little, too late. The spark is nearly gone. But I'm not giving up on the series yet.

I feel like I have been reading this series forever. Shapeshifters, vampires, bad cops, good cops, physchics, metaphysical...let's face it this series has got all things supernatural. This novel was better than the previous two in the series (in my opinion), and was a nail bitter until the final 1/4 of the book. Then it was a bit anti climatic, for me. Still a good read!

Dear LKH:
I have been an avid fan for many years and while I understand why you write the stories this way, I wish you wouldn‘t. We don‘t need to read about every little relationship issue, emotion and argument Anita & her poly group hash out. I want more action + plot + crime solving + cool preternatural creatures. Anita desperately needs a HEA, or you need to take your time and write me a book that does justice to the Anita of old. ⬇️ continued

MeganAnn 1/2: I will happily wait years for a book that is written with the well thought out plots and twists I‘ve come to love about Anita‘s stories. I don‘t even mind the sexy stuff or the relationship stuff or the occasional drama that adds to Anita‘s life, but please don‘t make it a disproportionately large part of the book. I really think it‘s best for everyone if you move onto to something new we can fall in love with. 6y
MeganAnn 2/2: But even if you don‘t I‘ll still buy it because I just can‘t let her go. 💔 So I guess you‘ll get paid either way 🤷‍♀️ On a happier note, these end papers are gorgeous and at least I can ogle them on my shelves. 🐍. Sincerely, an addicted fan who can‘t look away 6y
Owlizabeth Agreed on all counts - I‘ve promised myself I‘m sticking around until the wedding, but then I‘m done if they don‘t get better. 6y
MeganAnn @Owlizabeth I feel you! I‘m really hoping she‘ll decide to end the series with the wedding. 🤞🏻🙏🏻 That would give Anita her happy ending in a way and seems like a natural place to stop. She‘s strongly hinted on her blog in the past of something that‘s not Anita or Merry, but I haven‘t heard anything about that in quite awhile... and I know she‘s said there will be more Merry books eventually too. (edited) 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘d be very happy if she ended Anita and focused on Merry for a few more books. Then something new. But, who knows what she‘ll really do ... I‘ve been issuing my vote by not buying or reading any more Anita. 6y

Still too much repeated and drawn out info, but less so than the last book. So better, but not great. I'm hoping these start to get better or the series ends. I really like these characters but the books are starting to bum me out.

#BookMail Pt8 Last (and definitely least from all the reviews I‘ve seen!)is the latest Anita Blake book from Laurell.K.Hamilton. I know. Why am I inflicting this upon myself? It‘s like a weird obsession you just can‘t shake, like watching pimple popping videos on YouTube. #LikeACarCrashInSlowMotion

hlgreenfield I read the first book of this series and absolutely loved it, but so many people told me not to read on because it got really bad so I took their advice. 6y
Lizpixie @hlgreenfield the first 7 or 8 books are really good. I do recommend them so if you‘ve only read Guilty Pleasures I‘d read the next ones too. But after Obsidian Butterfly, it just gets more about the copious sex and less about the monster hunting detective. Which is a huge shame.💔 6y
Leniverse @Lizpixie @hlgreenfield Agreed. The first several books are good. The only negative is Anita's rabid hatred of tall blonde women and her conflicted guilt about having sex. Oh, and the poorly proofread French. But the plots and characters are great. Until the books suddenly become 90% sex (and some guilt) just wrapped in a plot that only turns up in the opening and closing chapters. 6y

hlgreenfield @Leniverse , @Lizpixie Thanks for the recommendation. So if I read the first 7 they are the same kind of book/quality as the first one? That is great to hear, because I really loved the first one, but after hearing so many horror stories about how it became all about sex I didn't read any further! 6y
Leniverse @hlgreenfield Definitely. I just checked, and I've read 11 of them. The last two or three were awful so I gave up, realising it was a new trend and not just a dud filler book. But you should be safe with at least seven, and some of them are even better than the first. So go for it until they stop being good! 6y
Karkar @hlgreenfield @Lizpixie @Leniverse I totally agree first ones are great! 6y

The book is just under 500 pages and less than 100 are devoted to monster hunting. The monster stuff was cool, if brief. The rest was repetitive, obnoxious relationship drama. Save yourself the time and just beat your head against a wall instead of reading about everyone‘s petty jealousies that amount to nothing in the end. Fuck this book, can‘t wait for the next one. #whycantiquityou

vivastory This is my favorite review I've seen in awhile 😂😂 6y
MeganAnn Arghhhh!!! I keep hoping she‘ll get back to more monster hunting, preternatural mystery solving with just a little relationship stuff thrown in. That‘s what I loved about this series in the beginning. I‘m still going to read this because I can‘t quit Anita either 🤷‍♀️ 6y
