Deep Creek
Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country | Pam Houston
19 posts | 19 read | 28 to read
"How do we become who we are in the world? We ask the world to teach us." In her travels from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska, Pam Houston explores what ties her to the earth--her 120-acre homestead in the Colorado Rockies most of all. Here, elk calves and bluebirds mark the changing seasons, winter temperatures drop to 35 below, and lightning sparks a 110,000-acre wildfire in a dry summer, threatening her century-old barn and its inhabitants. Alongside her devoted Irish wolfhounds, Houston learns what it means to take responsibility for a piece of land and the creatures on it.A survivor of parental abuse and neglect, Houston also discovers how the natural world has mothered and healed her. Deep Creek delivers her most profound meditations yet on how "to live simultaneously inside the wonder and the grief . . . to love the damaged world and do what I can to help it thrive."

This book did something to feed my soul. The writing is beautiful, the authors story is traumatic and triumphant. She is both humble and filled with wonder and grief all at once. I keep thinking about this book and doubt I‘ll find something like it anytime soon.

The stages of the pandemic have influenced my reading life in unexpected ways.

While I‘ve always wished I had more time to read, the beginning of lockdown was one of the times in my life when I read the least! Now, as the pace of life changes again, I‘m struggling anew. I was super into nature writing for awhile but apparently that time is over.

It makes sense that an upended routine would interrupt my normal flow…but it‘s still surprising!

Lindy I‘m going through an unexpected reading phase too. What‘s happening is a strong resistance to writing any kind of review when I finish a book; I just want to jump into another without giving much thought to what I‘ve just read. Brain bandwidth deficit. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
monalyisha @Lindy I didn‘t review the last few I finished for weeks, either — which, of course, means that when I finally sat down to write something my memory failed me entirely. 🙈 Everything feels like a big ask right now…even things I typically enjoy! Currently watching some Great British Bake-Off. That, I can handle. 😉 3y
Lindy @monalyisha Good idea. I will go browse my cookbooks now. 3y

Prairiegirl_reading @monalyisha when you have a hole in your life where bake-off used to be you might want out Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake. 3y
monalyisha @Prairiegirl_reading THANK YOU! That looks lovely! 3y
Prairiegirl_reading @monalyisha it‘s fun and really well done. 😄 My husband and I just watched all of the British and the Canadian, it‘s like balm for my soul or something. Take care!! 💜 3y
alisiakae My routines have been shifting too. I think my brain, and heart, is just starting to process everything it‘s been through in the last year. 3y

“What edges out the worry, of course, is the wonder.”

Houston‘s talking about how the Winter affects her farm & her animals, here, but I think the quote is applicable in a much broader sense. ✨

BiblioLitten That‘s a pretty good quote.💙 3y
Cathythoughts I like the quote ! Any help with worry is always welcome ❤️ 3y

My #NFN2020 stack! I think I‘ll pick up Deep Creek today. Something gentle would be a good tonic. I actually watched Episode One of a documentary this week too, so hopefully I‘ll have a few points to add up on Sunday, but it‘s just fun to participate and engage.

The documentary was the Netflix Challenger doc. Very good so far. +10 points.

“How do we become who we are in the world? We ask the world to teach us. But we have to ask with an open heart, with no idea what the answer will be.” ❤️

This beautiful memoir resonates with me in so many ways... I am so thankful to have read this when I did.

I‘m not an outdoorsy person. I respect the environment and I loved nature, but mostly from afar. But it‘s just too beautiful a day not to be out in it.

TheLibrarian The only thing I love doing outside is sitting in the sun reading but I hate bugs so it normally doesn‘t last long. 6y
LikelyLibrarian @TheLibrarian I‘m pretty much the same. Mosquitoes love me. My blood must be a delicacy 🙄 6y

I had to take a break from reading the tagged book after the Fenton chapter. The combo of Houston‘s stories about her dog and her optimistic celebration of earth wrecked me. After that chapter I had to go give my girls some hugs and a long walk (after I dried the tears). ❤️❤️

Reading for a book club. While I‘m not much on essays of ranch life unless its something like Owning it All by Bill Kittredge. But I‘m enjoying her writing and her honest and painful recounting of her family history. Doing the audio book.

My first Pam Houston (so, I live on the East Coast and under a rock, apparently. All of my Western US friends can‘t believe I haven‘t read her before). The writing is so gorgeous. I loved this memoir-in-essays.

Lcsmcat She‘s amazing, and really nice. I used to go to the same church, when I lived in Utah. 6y

My first author/book signing event I‘ve attended and it was great. I was able to read an advance copy which made it even more fun to hear her read from her book, and then buy a copy to be signed and I‘ll get to read it as a genuine book; my advance copy was only on my laptop but I couldn‘t put it down and finished it in less than 25 hours - excited to read it again as a luxuriant hardcover 📖😊

Erofan Congratulations! 🎉 6y
Tomigirl44 @Erofan 🙌😁thx - was so much fun - still looking forward to reading the hardcover - haven‘t had time to start it yet 😬 6y

Wow - I couldn‘t put it down, finishing it in 1 1/2 days. A rare 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 for this one! It captured me in the way the best books do, transporting me to the world of the author, primarily the rugged landscape of rural mountainous Colorado. Thanks #NetGalley for the ARC of #DeepCreek - it should be released end of January or early February.

Thanks, #NetGalley for the opportunity to read #DeepCreek ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I submitted the request this morning and was approved this afternoon so I downloaded the book and have been so enthralled that I‘ve read the first 52 pages (I had other plans for the afternoon) - & it‘s not available for my Kindle so I‘m reading this on my computer screen!

I‘ve been captivated, angered & laughed - my 1st book of Houston‘s - loving it!

Lcsmcat I used to go to the same church as her, and read (and loved) her earlier works. I‘ll have to watch for this to come out. 6y
Tomigirl44 @Lcsmcat That‘s awesome! It‘s such a hard book to put down - I just spent another hour+ reading - it‘s been a long time since a book so thoroughly captivated me. I think it‘s due out in Jan or Feb 2019. And I just bought Cowboys are my Weakness after starting this tonight (& added Contents May have Shifted to my TBR list). 6y
