12 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 28 to read
Edgar Award-winning editor Otto Penzler's new anthology brings together the most cunning, resourceful, and brilliant female sleuths in mystery fiction. A Vintage Crime/Black Lizard Original. For the first time ever, Otto Penzler gathers the most iconic women of the detective canon over the past 150 years, captivating and surprising readers in equal measure. The 74 handpicked stories in this collection introduce us to the most determined of gumshoe gals, from debutant detectives like Anna Katharine Green's Violet Strange to spinster sleuths like Mary Roberts Rinehart's Hilda Adams, from groundbreaking female cops like Baroness Orczy's Lady Molly to contemporary crime-fighting P.I.s like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone, and include indelible tales from Agatha Christie, Carolyn Wells, Edgar Wallace, L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace, Sara Paretsky, Nevada Barr, Linda Barnes, Laura Lippman, and many more.

This volume has been in my TBR for ages. I was starting to remember the stories in Bibliomysteries edited by the same author, so I switched to this volume. The introduction by O.P. tells the history of the female detective in literature, which was fascinating. The book is divided by eras- the first being “The Victorians and the Edwardians (British).” I just finished the first story in this section, “The Mysterious Countess,” quite a fun read.

Now that I finished Miss Marple‘s short stories, I have turned to this big tome. It too will be beside my bed for occasional night time reading for several months! It covers 150 years of such mystery stories.

LeahBergen Ooo, lovely! 3y
Bklover I‘ve seen this book at the bookstore and it looks fascinating! 3y

#TBRtemptation post 3! On this massive anthology, edited by the mystery genre‘s legendary Otto Penzler (owner of #NYC‘s Mysterious Bookshop), you‘ll find 74 stories spanning 150 years of publication, all of them having females in the starring roles, whether groundbreaking police officers to hard-boiled P.I.s. Christie, Lippman, Paretsky, Orczy, Grafton, are among those who have stories included. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

kspenmoll I have this but is so big I have to sit to read! Great collection! 5y

This big book (1136 pages) is collection of short stories (and few novellas) over the past 150 years, where main character is female trying to resolve some kind of mystery, murder, robbery ... Each story begins with short introduction of the author and where/when story was first published. I didn‘t enjoy in all of them, but the collection as a whole is very interesting and good overview of female characters (and their development) in this genre.

Cinfhen Did u read the WHOLE BOOK???? 🙌🏻💕😘 6y
Simona @Cinfhen Of course I did, and I don‘t regret it! A month and a half of hard work 🤓😘 6y

Big book for looong night (first book for #Booked2019), while we are waiting for neighbors to burn all the firecrackers in the world 😠😡🤬

@hermyknee #readinthenewyear #currentlyreading

valeriegeary Oh no! Fire crackers are the worst! We used to have a dog who would go hide in our shower! 🙈 6y
Susannah Your poor animals! It‘s the same in my neighborhood. Once it‘s dark, the fireworks will gradually escalate until about 1am. 👎😡 6y
Simona @valeriegeary Close to the midnight I usually sit in bathroom with my dog and cat ... apparently the bathroom is the safest place in the house. 6y

Simona @MicheleinPhilly What a thrilling game 🤬 6y
staci.reads Same here. Sounds like a battle zone 😡 6y
batsy I feel so bad for the dogs :( Luckily this year the fireworks in our area were pretty muted. 6y
Simona @staci.reads I hope that today will be peaceful, quite day.😞 6y
Simona @batsy I can tolerate and understand (to a certain degree) fireworks at midnight, but not the firecrackers through the day. 6y
