pickLast night, right before bed, I finished this short, bittersweet prequel/retelling of ‘A Christmas Carol‘. The nature of Dickens‘ original story, (including the sad fate of Marley) and the author‘s death before completing the novel, made ‘Miss Marley‘ even more poignant. It‘s left me to contemplate redemption, second chances, and most importantly our influence on others and consequence of our actions. #OverbookedClub

pickI enjoyed this prequel to A Christmas Carol, particularly Clara‘s character, but have mixed feelings about the ending. Of course, being a prequel it couldn‘t do much different.

pickA Seasonal Tale of Kindness and Goodwill was an enjoyable read. The character development of both Jacob and Clara was flawless and so smooth. A great side tale of Dickens original. For all the fans of A Christmas Carol out there, I recommend reading this "prequel." This was a delightful, charming story of a young Jacob Marley and his sister Clara. I didn't think it was written completely in the style of Dickens, but that wasn't a bad thing as I think it captured the spirit very well without becoming too sacharine and fitted into a Christmas Carol too. Jabob and Clara are in desperate poverty after the death of their parents, but due to Jacob's will to survive they manage to build a life together. Jacob becomes a hard-hearted miser but Clara never loses the love that sustained her.
pickAbsolutely beautiful and the perfect prelude to “A Christmas Carol”. The details about Dickensian London were clearly researched down to the finite details, & it kept with the “spirit” (pun partially intended) & themes of “A Christmas Carol”. The last part of the book & the edits were actually completed by Vanessa Lafaye‘s friend who shared her love of Dickens, as sadly Lafaye passed away from cancer this past February.
