The Black Hour
The Black Hour | Lori Rader-Day
16 posts | 15 read | 11 to read
For Chicago sociology professor Amelia Emmet, violence was a research topic--until a student she'd never met shot her.He also shot himself. Now he's dead and she's back on campus, trying to keep up with her class schedule, a growing problem with painkillers, and a question she can't let go: Why?All she wants is for life to get back to normal, but normal is looking hard to come by. She's thirty-eight and hobbles with a cane. Her first student interaction ends in tears (hers). Her fellow faculty members seem uncomfortable with her, and her ex--whom she may or may not still love--has moved on.Enter Nathaniel Barber, a graduate student obsessed with Chicago's violent history. Nath is a serious scholar, but also a serious mess about his first heartbreak, his mother's death, and his father's disapproval. Assigned as Amelia's teaching assistant, Nath also takes on the investigative legwork that Amelia can't do. And meanwhile, he's hoping she'll approve his dissertation topic, the reason he came to grad school in the first place: the student attack on Amelia Emmet.Together and at cross-purposes, Amelia and Nathaniel stumble toward a truth that will explain the attack and take them both through the darkest hours of their lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I almost rated this as a pick, because I had fun reading it and had trouble putting it down. However, I think there was too much that was unbelievable and/or left unexplained. I would definitely be willing to give her other books a chance though.

One year ago, I posted my #firstpost to you #Littens. I had no idea how much love, bookish fun, and real life friendship I would find on this social media app. Thanks for a great first year and here's to many to come! #litsyversary

This was between a Pick and a So-So for me. The premise of an unresolved shooting on a college campus was unsettling but definitely kept my interest. I think it was the writing style that stalled it for me. The dialogue was halting at times, with many sentences of inner monologue and observations between each line in the conversation. Overall, though, this was a solid thriller with some unforeseen twists.

@rachelm recommended this on someone else's post about The Bullet, which I read and liked earlier this year. This looks like it could be really good! #blameitonLitsy #seasonsreadings2016 #lastbookyoustacked

#firsteverlitsypost for #booktober :
almost six months ago and has one like.
I'm getting all sentimental because Litsy has truly encouraged me to read more. I've read more than forty books since joining because I love being involved in the conversation and all of you have such great recommendations!

Thank you littens!

BookishFeminist ❤️❤️❤️ so glad you're on here & glad we've gotten to know each other! I agree, Litsy has encouraged me to read more too. (And sometimes less when I'm too busy Litsying!) When I'm not reading there's no other way I'd rather spend my time than with book people! 8y
rachelm @BookishFeminist true that! I hope we run into each other at a real life bookish thing in the future! 8y

Day 2's book completed late last night! A college teacher, Dr Emmet, is shot by a student who then kills himself. 10 months later, Dr Emmet returns with a burning question: why her?! The Black Hour was really good!! A little slow in spots but worth it. I never guessed who it was... "It's always darkest before it's light. That's why we call it the black hour."

Two perspectives in this mystery/thriller with each side "Miss Marple"ing without the other quite realizing it. Academic setting but don't need to be in academia to enjoy. Recommended!

About halfway through so far and using a card my niece made me as a bookmark. The bookmark is way too cheery for this suspense...
