Haunting of Blackwood House
Haunting of Blackwood House | Darcy Coates
27 posts | 32 read | 47 to read
"Could you survive a week in a haunted house?" Mara is the daughter of spiritualists. Her childhood was filled with seances, scam mediums and talk of ghostly presences. When Mara finally left her family's home, she vowed she would never allow superstition or false religion into her life again. Now she's ready to start over with her fiance, Neil, in a world based on rationality and facts. But her past isn't ready to let her go just yet. Mara and Neil purchase Blackwood House, a derelict property outside of town. They're warned about strange occurrences in the crumbling building. Doors open by themselves, voices whisper in the night, bloody handprints appear on the walls, and cold spots linger in the basement, where the house's original owner was murdered. But Blackwood was dirt-cheap and came with a large plot of overgrown land. Mara loves her new home, and disregards the warnings. Because ghosts aren't real... ...are they?"

This was a good book and a great ghost story. My only issue with it was the protagonist, Mars, was insufferable. Because she grew up in a home with spiritualists and (some) fake mediums, she was so close-minded and stubborn that I almost didn‘t finish the book. It did get better later, but OMG!!

As the daughter of spiritualists, Mara's childhood was filled with séances and scam mediums. Now she's ready to start over with her fiancé, Neil, far away from the superstitions she's learned to loathe...but her past isn't willing to let her go so easily.

And neither is Blackwood House.

It was a slow-moving book, and maybe not super-original, but it was scary. I had a hard time heading to the basement to clean my cats‘ litter box the one evening I‘d been reading the book! Because of that, it gets a high rating from me. The book did its job to scare me, as any good horror should.

My second Darcy Coates book and what got me to want to read many more by her!

Last year, I finished off my Halloween reading with The Haunting of Ashburn House. I really loved it so I thought I‘d give another Darcy Coates book a try. So I reached for The Haunting of Blackwood House, but unfortunately this one let me down.

Full, very sarcastic, review here: https://wildwoodreads.com/2021/10/30/the-haunting-of-blackwood-house-review/

TurnerofPages The Haunting of Blackwood House by Darcy Coates was the first book I ever read from her. I really liked it, and I was hooked on her books ever since! Have you read The Haunting of Leigh Harker yet? 3y
wildwoodreads @TurnerofPages I haven‘t. I do want to try more of her books though because I love her writing style. I just found the main character unbearable in this one. 3y
TurnerofPages Oh, yes.... Mara!! She was a train wreck of a human being! I was not a fan of her either. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to feel sorry for her, but I actually felt more sorry for her boyfriend for how she treated him!! HE was the real hero in this story for putting up with her!!! 😆 3y
wildwoodreads @TurnerofPages I agree 100% 😂😂😂 3y

Here's hoping this turns out to be a great read

johncadams The cover looks interesting. 3y
TurnerofPages Darcy Coates is one of my top horror authors!!! How did you like this? This was one of my favorites from her and is also the very first book I have ever read from her. 3y
itsjustme40something I have to say, in the nicest way possible, the story was predictable....but in that comfortable old friend type of predictable, with good writing and characters. Yet that twist at the end was something I didn't see coming and now I need to find a more fitting word than predictable 3y

I am a sucker for a good haunted house story and this one was pretty good. It‘s only the second Darcy Coates book I‘ve read and I would definitely read more of her work. It‘s a very G-Rated style of writing. Mara loses her job and purchases an old abandoned house. She was raised by spiritualists. She doesn‘t believe in ghosts. She‘s in denial her house is haunted despite the repeated ghostly occurrences and her boyfriend‘s warnings. #MountTBR

I enjoyed this immensely!
A typical (somewhat cliche) haunted house story, but oddly that's what made me like it so much. I didn't want to put this down, but did at night because I'm a giant chicken and was scared to read this in the dark 😅
I'll surely be picking up more from Coates!

This is the third Darcy Coates book I‘ve read in the past few weeks and it‘s been my favorite so far. Nothing new or groundbreaking, but they‘re solid, fun ghost stories. I‘m going to move onto some other horror authors for now - especially as we‘re heading into October - but I‘ll definitely revisit Coates‘ catalog of books again. 👻

Bad week for reading between my daughters birthday, her party on the weekend, and working on orders. Then I couldn't find my kindle for a whole day ... I should have known it was in my yarn bag lol. Can't wait to finish up this one. Hopefully I'll get a little more free time

A creepy, ghostly read from the pen of Darcy Coates. I have always loved stories about buying abandoned old houses and encountering spirits, and this one lived up to my expectations. In fact I have an unfinished manuscript of my own lying in a drawer...maybe one day I will complete it.

Another lovely ghost story from one of my favorite authors! I‘m now going to continue the story with Graham House.

Literary_Siren I‘ll just review Graham House here since it‘s not in the database and it‘s only an 11 minute read. I liked it but I wouldn‘t even classify it as suspense, let alone horror. It was too short to feel any sort of way about it except maybe satisfaction from justice being served quickly. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6y

It‘s taking me a long time to get through this one, simply because it‘s an Audible book and I usually listen on my way home from work. It‘s the Summer school holidays at the moment so no work for me, but I go back next week after 6 weeks off. Got to love working in a school!

Literary_Siren This is my current read. I‘m loving it!! 6y
Jhullie @Literary_Siren me too. I‘m 75% through it and it‘s really getting creepier by the page. 6y
Literary_Siren You‘re farther along than I am. I‘m only 60% done. Have you read/listened to any of her other books? 6y
Jhullie Yes just one other, I prefer Blackwood though. Probably the narrator‘s fault and not the author 😖 6y
BookBabe I read 2 others (plus a short story). Ashburn House and Gillespie House. I liked both of those much better than Blackburn. Blackburn has too much cheesy romancey stuff for my liking 🙄. I haven‘t tried them on audio, only kindle. Aside from this one, I really like her books! 6y

Another Darcy Coates haunted house book that I enjoyed. Mara was raised by spiritualists and is determined that ghosts do not exist and has no problem purchasing a home with a dark, morbid history. Sometimes her resistance was a bit annoying but some great imagery and bumps in the night. I have decided that Darcy Coates is my grown up version to my adolescent love of R.L. Stine.

BookwormAHN I think that's a good comparison 🖤 6y
JoScho @BookwormAHN thank you 😊 6y
inthegreensandblues Based on that comparison, I'm convinced I need to read this author. 😄 6y
JoScho @inthegreensandblues yes! I have read a bunch of her books and love them. I am about to start another one. I recommend starting with 6y

I was going to go get a stuffed black cat to pose with books for today‘s #OctoberPutASpellOnYou photo, but my real life #BlackCat, Max, is sly and has ninja skills when it comes to turning my well intentioned audiobook cleaning sessions into an afternoon of #AudiobookAndChill! He doesn‘t generally hold still long enough for a pic, so I took the opportunity to snap a shot of his adorable face!

I love a good haunted house tale. A fun romp with some good backstory. I did sometimes get rather irked with the main character who could be very pigheaded and judgmental. But she did have some redeeming qualities. I definitely felt this one was a practice for the authors amazing tale of the Carrow Haunt. I did want just a bit more from this one; more suspense, more haunting, more house and ghost history. But overall, a lot of fun!
