Reunion
Reunion: A Novel | Hannah Pittard
The author of the highly acclaimed The Fates Will Find Their Way returns with a novel about a far-flung family reunited for one weekend by their father's death. Five minutes before her flight is set to take off, Kate Pulaski, failed screenwriter and newly failed wife with scarcely a hundred dollars to her name, learns that her estranged father has killed himself. More shocked than saddened by the news, she gives in to her siblings' request that she join them, along with her many half-siblings and most of her father's five former wives, in Atlanta, their birthplace, for a final farewell. Written with huge heart and bracing wit, REUNION takes place over the following four days, as family secrets are revealed, personal foibles are exposed, and Kate-an inveterate liar looking for a way to come clean-slowly begins to acknowledge the overwhelming similarities between herself and the man she never thought she'd claim as an influence, much less a father. Hannah Pittard's "engaging and vigorous"* prose masterfully illuminates the problems that can divide modern families--and the ties that prove impossible to break. (*Chicago Tribune)

While flying back home to Chicago, Kate has just found out her dad has killed himself. Her soon-to-be ex-husband wants nothing to do with her and she now has to go back to the city she grew up in so she can bury her father.

I really didn't like Kate. I found her to be entitled, spoiled, and unable to take responsibility for her actions. Ironically enough, Kate is a failed screenwriter and I feel like this book would actually make a better movie.

#FlyHighJuly Day 20: My longtime friends and I (around 38 years of friendship thruout our elementary and high school years) had our Zoom #reunion today for a little over two hours across three different time zones: two are still in the Philippines, one is based in New Jersey, and me in UAE. We also have our teenage younglings with us.

Velvetfur Aahh such lovely happy photos! 😊 4y

This was an ok book! It was quick. But I fell like it just stopped! I didn‘t get closure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Think, This Is Where I Leave You with a little less humor plus a female voice and you have Reunion.

Pittard's writing is wonderfully emotional and truly takes the reader through the rollercoaster of emotions facing the narrator as she deals with death, divorce and debt.

This book made me anxious while reading...but in a good way, if that's possible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I won't be going on a vacation this summer but finishing this book on the roof on a darn near perfect Monday evening seems pretty good.

This is a good book with a quick pace. It moved me to tears (hit a liiiiitle close to home at moments). This is a dark book with some real joy in it? It's about suicide and family and the way we make lives for ourselves. I didn't love it but it got me thinking.

I'm listening to this audiobook randomly because I love the narrator so much. She read two of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books and is SO good.

Bedside view. The clutter kills me, but books don't make the shelf until they're read. It's my feeble attempt at keeping the TBR under control.

Chassie Too funny! I do the same thing, and my pile is HUGE. 7y
melrailey I do the same thing! The piles of unread books in the floor - some taller than me! 7y

Thank you for prompting me to make this a must-stop destination in Chicago @Lola !!! It was one of the best burgers we have ever had - I mean, just look at that cheese! So sexy and dark in there too. Indulgent. Also, @mauveandrosysky posted about this book recently, and it is indeed easy, quick, and full of laugh out loud moments and some very real truths. 3 siblings reunite after their father's suicide. Reminds me of This Is Where I Leave You!

Reviewsbylola My husband is grilling burgers tonight but I feel like they will be so mediocre now that I have seen this! 😍 8y
MrBook Niiiiiiiiice! You and @Lola have now experienced a culinary joy that I must indulge in before I die. That looks sooo awesome! 😁👍🏻 8y

Pickpick

The plot isn't anything new, but Pittard's humor, wit, insight, and emotional honesty are enough to make this a dysfunctional family novel well worth reading. It's not always easy to make a deeply flawed character likable, but Kate Pulaski is one of my favorite first-person female narrators in a while. This is my second Pittard novel, and I'll officially read everything she ever writes.

Girl_Power What's your first fave? 8y
mauveandrosysky @Girl_Power do you mean of Pittard's books? Of the two I've read, I liked Listen to Me more. I'm going to read The Fates Will Find Their Way ASAP though! 8y
Girl_Power Yep, that's what I meant! I loved those two as well, and was curious to hear if Fates was as good. It's on my TBR. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Girl_Power I can't wait to find out! 😀 8y

PREACH! 🙌🏻 Like I always say: Money may not buy happiness. But if I'm gonna be miserable, let me be miserable in a mansion overlooking the ocean. 💸

reneelyons This book sounds great, it may need to move way up on by TBR (along with sooo many others 😭). 8y
mauveandrosysky @reneelyons the constant struggle of the ever-growing TBR! 😩 This one really is wonderful so far though. 8y

You guys, I love Hannah Pittard so much. I mean, this right here is my kind of humor. Sorry in advance if I post like a million quotes from this book. I'll try to practice some restraint, but I can't make any promises.

BookishFeminist Let's see those quotes!! 8y
mauveandrosysky @shawnmooney @BookishFeminist such enablers! 😂 Love it. 8y
BooksForEmpathy Yes please! I have been contemplating reading more of her after Listen to Me. So glad you're enjoying this one!! Keep the quotes coming! 8y
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy this is so much different than Listen to Me so far! It's got a lighter, funnier tone. (I mean it's about a woman whose father just committed suicide so the subject matter itself isn't light, but her first-person narration is very quietly funny). But I love how even though it's different, I'm still LOVING it. She's so talented. 8y
