In this fast-paced and evocative novel, beloved New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank again takes us deep into the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where three unsuspecting women are brought together by tragedy and mysteryLisa St. Clair knows a thing or two about weathering storms. A dedicated nurse with a healthy sense of humor, she single-handedly raised her truculent daughter, Marianne, after her ex walked out on them twenty-four years ago, sending them a lottery ticket once a year as support. One day he reappeared and lured their daughter into a dubious but lucrative venture in Colorado. Now mother and daughter aren't speaking. So when Kathy Harper, Lisa's favorite patient, loses her battle with cancer, Lisa finds herself drawing closer to Carrie and Suzanne, the devoted friends who were always by Kathy's side. As these three women's lives inevitably connect, they share their concerns about men, getting older and the horrors of maintaining financial stability. Suzanne's ninety-nine-year-old grandmother, a former chanteuse, offers unexpected perspectives on the mores of the day. Carrie's greedy ex-stepchildren are a chorus of cackling crows. And Lisa's mother just can't help herself as she henpecks her to distraction.Somehow their conversations always return to the enigma of Kathy. Who was she? What did her short life mean?Lisa, Carrie, and Suzanne power walk the beaches of the Isle of Palms with Pickle, Lisa's adorable Westie. Gradually they uncover the truth of Kathy's life and unfurl plans to secure their own futures, as fate steps in to help them discover that being single doesn't have to mean being alone. Dorothea Benton Frank shows us that friendship is as powerful as the turning tide and that love is about more than just finding the right person. You'll fall under the magical spell of the Lowcountry and of all the single ladies who have a whole lot of living to do.

I needed a light, fun, funny book with a little bit of chew and this one worked for me. I loved the character of Lisa St Clair immediately; she made me lol and I could identify with her on some things 😉 from workplace stresses to family dysfunction, old friends and relationships to new friends and relationships, a mystery and of course, love. A perfect book after some heavier material 😁 Book 11 for #15books15weeks.

Picked up this gem at a local used book store. I've always enjoyed reading Dorothea Benton Frank books-still can't believe she's gone after a short illness. I don't live in the low country but enjoy reading books in this setting. This book was full of southern charm and these single ladies deserve some happiness👍 would love to be their neighbor😊

intothehallofbooks I love love love her books and I‘m so sad she is gone. Her Southern characters are some of the closest to my own personal experiences living in eastern NC. 4y

That little tagline that lists what I'm reading? It's all a lie, y'all. I keep getting sidetracked by books that just saunter across my path. Dot Frank reliably turns out a book a year, and so when I was checking on what she's got coming out next, I found this. Low country setting? Feisty octogenarian? Cad of an ex-husband? Supportive female friends? You betcha. A nice read. Frank makes the Low Country magnetic.

Frank's books are always enjoyable reads, and this one hits her usual marks. Clever, engaging characters, at least one dysfunctional relationship, a beautiful Lowcountry setting. Also as usual, she touches on some more serious topics, in this case elder care and the legal marijuana issue. It's not great literature, but a pleasant read. And this completes #letterA for #LitsyAtoZ.

ptkpepe98 I always, always laugh out loud while reading her books. I feel myself getting into trouble with the characters. I think some of them my be friends of mine! And she is spot on about living along the Carolina coast. It's definitely a thing.😉 7y
Lynnsoprano @ptkpepe98 We've visited Charleston/Mt. Pleasant a couple times, and I can perfectly picture the scenes when I read her books. Always feel as if I want to be friends with her characters 😊 7y

Feeling a bit better today, but still have a fever. At least I'm out of my pjs and in the recliner, watching soccer and starting my fifth book of the year. This is probably a record for me.

This line is just one example of why I love the way this woman writes! Warning! If you're prudish, you will be offended. And bless your heart....

"I was in a situation because for the first time in at least ten years I felt a powerful twitch south of the Mason-Dixon line in my personal Lowcountry."

If you didn't just laugh out loud, next time you're in the Lowcountry, let me know. I'll buy you a beer so we can loosen ya up a bit.

Suet624 This is hysterical. 7y

Started this after finishing Stephen King's "Doctor Sleep." Needed a little something different, and Miz Dorothea always delivers. I've been a fan forever, especially since I know the Lowcountry very, very well, and so her tales never fail to keep me enchanted and entertained.
