A beautiful, mind bending merging of genres to create this masterpiece: bold; insightful; unapologetically ambitious. This book elevates and elevates. There‘s one particular section describing the breakdown in the chain of duties that leads to a disaster—it‘s one of the most powerful, brilliantly laid out scenarios I‘ve ever read.

quote
Taylor
Atlas Shrugged | Zola Press

Did it matter … which part of the corpse had been consumed by which type of maggot, by those who gorged themselves or by those who gave the food to other maggots? So long as living flesh was prey to be devoured, did it matter whose stomach it had gone to fill?

quote
Taylor
Atlas Shrugged | Zola Press

You see … people don‘t want to think. And the deeper they get into trouble, the less they want to think. But by some sort of instinct, they feel that they ought to and it makes them feel guilty. So they‘ll bless and follow anyone who gives them a justification for not thinking. Anyone who makes a virtue—a highly intellectual virtue—out of what they know to be their sin, their weakness and their guilt.

quote
Taylor
Atlas Shrugged | Zola Press

To watch you as you are, as you face the world with your clean, proud strength—then to see you, in my bed, submitting to any infamous whim I may devise, to any act which I‘ll perform for the sole purpose of watching your dishonor and to which you‘ll submit for the sake of an unspeakable sensation…I want you—and may I be damned for it!

quote
Taylor
Atlas Shrugged | Zola Press

Her feeling for the railroad was the same: worship of the skill that had gone to make it, of the ingenuity of someone‘s clean, reasoning mind, worship with a secret smile that said she would know how to make it better some day. She hung around the tracks and the round-houses like a humble student, but the humility had a touch of future pride, a pride to be earned.

#PageItForward

Anyone interested in these two books? They're paperback and I've owned them for 10+ years. Some shelf wear but no writing or highlighting in the pages.

I'm happy to pass them on to a fellow reader. In the US please since they're so large.

Just comment below if you'd like them. 💚

EvieBee I‘d like both! And I can pay for shipping, if they‘re still available. 2y
Addison_Reads @EvieBee I appreciate the offer, but shipping in the states isn't bad. It's just international that gets a bit expensive. If you'll email me your mailing address I'll get them out to you this week. caddison97@gmail.com 2y
EvieBee @Addison_Reads Cassie, you are the best. Thank you so much! I‘ll send you my address. I used to own these very editions but they got donated in one of many moves in the last 8 years. 2y

I‘m used to the traditional “Tell them what you‘re going to tell them,” Tell them,” “Tell them what you‘ve told them” of instruction, because “Tell them,” “Tell them,” ad nauseam gets old. Any Rand beats you over the head with her philosophy. Okay, fine, I knew this before I began reading the book. I read it for the story, not the philosophy. Unfortunately, the story is predictable: boy meets girl, girl hates boy, girl loves “ideal” man. The end.

Epic! I have read this book twice in it‘s entirety and have reread passages countless times. This book has not only stood the test of time, it is arguably more relevant now than ever.

JoeMo Impressive! Rand hammers points repeatedly into the reader‘s head so severely in Atlas Shrugged that I don‘t think I‘ll ever muster the will to revisit it...I was a huge fan of The Fountainhead though. 4y
BlackCat13 @JoeMo Agreed, she does! The Fountainhead was great too. 4y

I waited too long to read this! I've heard so much about it over the years, positive and negative, and I've owned a copy of it for a long time. I was always intimidated by my paperback copy's girth, and on the shelf it sat. I ended up using an audible credit for the version read by Christopher Hurt. I'm glad I did. His performance was fantastic and I really liked the novel. I followed along and read some of it in my chunky paperback along the way.

Yooouuuu guuuyysss!!! I‘m finally finished! This beast of a book is definitely an investment of time and energy, but it‘s no shrug. (Hehe get it?) This Book was definitely before its time. I loved the strong female lead and the statements about government regulation, socialism, beaurocracy and capitalism. Not to mention the exploration into the meaning of existence. Light read: no. Good read: yes

Jess7 Thanks for participating! 🤗 I loved Robert Gailbraith (aka: JK Rowling)'s book The Cuckoo's Calling. I haven't made it through her other two in the series yet. Have you read The Silkworm yet? If so, did it speed up after awhile? 7y
Jess7 Ooohh I love my kindle too. Which one do you have? I clung to my 2nd or 3rd generation kindle for sooo long. It's still going strong. I just gave it to my husband to use when I got my kindle paper white last Christmas. #KindlesAreTheBest 7y
clconn17 @Jess7 I read the Silkworm and liked it but not as much as the first one. Still haven't read Career of Evil yet. I have a kindle reader with the glare free screen. I love mine! 7y
TheKidUpstairs @Jess7 I loved Cuckoo's Calling, but was 'meh' about Silkworm. I hope Career of Evil is better. 7y

Books that seem #impossible and intimidate me. But one day, I will conquer you all! 😬💪🏻 #LyricalApril
Side note: I had started House of Leaves, but how the pages are set up left me feeling a little wonky, so I took a break from it - but I did love the story!

Cinfhen That stack intimidates me too🙀 8y
Moray_Reads I've read all of them but Atlas Shrugged. All well worth the (considerable) effort 😊 8y
bitterbear @Moray_Reads Atlas shrugged is horrid... I would skim it.. I've read most of her stuff and this one was tedious. 8y

Robothugs @Moray_Reads Good to know! I may take out this copy and add it to the stack - but it was hidden behind other books. 😹 (edited) 8y
Robothugs Hmm that's disappointing. I'll see how I feel about it once I start. At least I'll know I'm not alone if I don't enjoy it. @bitterbear 8y
bitterbear @Robothugs It's not terrible but once she gets started on her philosophy sh 8y

Robothugs @bitterbear oh dear 🙈 that doesn't sound like a pleasant read. 8y
Sarahr875 Oh I loved house of leaves. I do understand how you feel, though. It was a trip. You should check out The Familiar. Danielewski is such a fun author 8y
Robothugs I do plan to check that out... right after I tackle House of Leaves! 😂 @Sarahr875 8y
Sarahr875 Haha @Robothugs completely understandable! The Familiar is a lot different than House of Leaves. I can't decide which I like better. I like scary books, though, so I'm leaning toward House of Leaves. But The Familiar is a series so 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe I'll change my mind 8y
LitLogophile I love War and Peace, and Atlas Shrugged! Infinite Jest is my big book that sits on my shelf mocking me 😂 8y
rainswept That's an Everest stack of I ever saw one! 7y

This is the first book that came to mind when I saw the planes, trains and automobiles prompt. This book has so much about trains in it. I once also saw a train car in Boston that had been named "Dagny Taggart" after the character in this book. There is also a scene in the book where Dagny flies a plane, so that's two of the three. #planestrainsautomobiles #photoadaynov16
