The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town. When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age eighteen, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington D.C. But just as the political chaos in the nation's capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol--and perhaps even to Washington. More disturbing still, Marshall's high school sweetheart, Jet, has married into the family of Max Matheson, patriarch of one of the families that rule Bienville through a shadow organization called the Bienville Poker Club. When archeologist Buck McKibben is murdered at a construction site, Bienville is thrown into chaos. The ensuing homicide investigation is soon derailed by a second crime that rocks the community to its core. Power broker Max Matheson's wife has been shot dead in her own bed, and the only other person in it at the time was her husband, Max. Stranger still, Max demands that his daughter-on-law, Jet, defend him in court. As a journalist, Marshall knows all too well how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Without telling a soul, he joins forces with Jet, who has lived for fifteen years at the heart of Max Matheson's family, and begins digging into both murders. With Jet walking the dangerous road of an inside informer, they soon uncover a web of criminal schemes that undergird the town's recent success. But these crimes pale in comparison to the secret at the heart of the Matheson family. When those who have remained silent for years dare to speak to Marshall, pressure begins to build like water against a crumbling dam. Marshall loses friends, family members, and finally even Jet, for no one in Bienville seems willing to endure the reckoning that the Poker Club has long deserved. And by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

If you like the Penn Cage novels, you‘ll like this one as it just felt like the same series with a different MC.
So many twists and turns and ethical/moral decisions to make.
A good read that took me all week because I‘ve had no reading time to focus!

Ain‘t that the truth.
I am very sorry to the author but I had to change from US spelling to U.K. because I just couldn‘t.
I have just been called out on fb for being pedantic, it may be one of those days. (But someone said Queen of England a title that hasn‘t been used since 1707!).
That post went a bit off message didn‘t it.

batsy That quote—definitely the truth. And I feel it leads to a significant change; you're not the same person after. 4y
GingerAntics I suppose that is technically true, but Scotland doesn‘t want her, Wales doesn‘t want her, Northern Ireland doesn‘t want her, and if Cornwall could get recognition as it‘s own country again, it wouldn‘t want her. In all fairness, half of England also doesn‘t want her, but seeing that half do, they will gladly claim her. (Also in all fairness, I think she‘s adorable... and English spelling makes more bloody sense to me and I‘m American.) 4y
TrishB @GingerAntics it was only the technicality I was going for. The whether we want a monarchy has never been truly tested recently. We have enough breaking the country at the moment without adding that to it. Though eventually. 4y
See All 12 Comments
TrishB @batsy totally agree. But something that is very difficult to explain until it happens to you. 4y
GingerAntics @TrishB I‘ve kind of wondered how people felt about the Queen in relation to Johnson and all of his Trump like madness. She‘s cool, calm, and collected by comparison, from what I‘ve seen. 4y
JazzFeathers Truly, losing a parent can't be explained. 4y
TrishB @GingerAntics I think there will be a reckoning when she goes. 4y
TrishB @JazzFeathers I think so too. 4y
GingerAntics I think that storm has been brewing for quite a while. 4y
MsMelissa I‘m all for the correct way of spelling things 😉 I hate that several words here in Canada are starting to shift more to the American way of spelling them (we have several words that are considered correct no matter if you spell them the British or American way). 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was called pretentious once for using "theatre" in a printed handout. When I told the guy I was referring to the cultured folks visiting Broadway and not 400 horny guys with giant sodas & popcorn watching a Michael Bay film, the others laughed and conceded to my spelling. 4y

Literally 10 minutes and a crisp buttie!! My no time non healthy eating probably does not help the grumpiness either.
Book is great, just not enough reading time.

Bookwomble Brown or white bread? What flavour crisps? 😐 4y
Oryx Now I'm craving a crisp buttie 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Do you mean a sandwich filled with crisps? Is this a Brits thing? 4y
See All 22 Comments
Cathythoughts Cheese & onion crisps on white bread ... would be my choice ... stop giving me ideas 😂 4y
TrishB @Bookwomble white, thick, Warburtons bread, loads of butter and today I had chicken (walkers) crisps, my fave is usually cheese and onion. Golden Wonder also acceptable! 4y
TrishB @Oryx sometimes you just have to 😁 4y
TrishB @erzascarletbookgasm and an Irish thing as Cathy wants one too! 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts that‘s definitely my fave too 😁 4y
LeahBergen Ooo! Walkers Cheese and Onion crisps are my favourite! 😆 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Ooooh, interesting. I should try to make a local version of it! 😋 4y
TrishB @LeahBergen they are indeed food from the gods! I didn‘t realise you got them in Canada! (edited) 4y
TrishB @erzascarletbookgasm Please post a pic if you do Jessie 😁 4y
LeahBergen We don‘t! I can sometimes get them at our British import grocers. I think I ate my body weight in them last summer when I was in England. 😂 4y
TrishB @LeahBergen they are definitely addictive! 4y
MsMelissa I‘m glad someone else asked what the ‘chip‘ part of a chip buttie is. Now I want one 😂 4y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen have you ever tried Bulk Barn? The one near us sells quite a few Brit treats. I get my Fry‘s Chocolate Creams from there (favourite flavour is orange cream). 4y
LeahBergen @Book_Fiend_Melissa Oh, that‘s good to know! We have a few Bulk Barns here but I‘ve never been to one (perhaps it‘s the less-than-glamorous name? 😂). I‘ll be checking them out. I‘ve never had a Fry‘s Chocolate Cream and now that I‘ve looked them up I‘ll be searching for the peppermint ones. 😆 4y
TrishB @Book_Fiend_Melissa @LeahBergen hubby loves Fry‘s Chocolate Creams! He gets the multi pack with all flavours. 4y
Balibee146 Mm mm a Frys Five. Entries used to be my Sunday morning treat choc growing up... My dad would always get me one when he went for his Sunday paper 😏 don't think they make them any more 4y
Balibee146 *five centres.... Sorry Autocorrect fail! xx 4y
Balibee146 Oh also I like prawn cocktail or tomato sauce crisp butties with a slice of cheddar added.... Even better if its on a well fired Csoffish morning roll rather than bread 😋 #hungry 4y
TrishB @Balibee146 I remember them ❤️ we don‘t really see tomato sauce crisps here anymore either. 4y

This story is full of unlikable characters but I still wanted to know what happened to them, thus proving my point that the worst sin a character can commit is not being unlikeable—it‘s being boring! The situations strain credulity at times, but it‘s a fast-paced, engaging thriller and it entertained me.

Mehso-so

So-so is the perfect descriptor for my feelings about this book. It was intriguing enough to listen to for 24 hours, but I'm still left feeling not entirely enthused. I love thrillers but I guess this is outside of my niche. It might just be the slower pace and all the extra family drama weaved into it. Plus the whole affair situation rubbed me a bit wrong. Overall it was a enjoyable read, though.

TW: child death, racial slurs, rape, war combat

DieAReader Thanks for the heads up on the TWs. Much appreciated. 4y
annkuch13 @SquidgetsRoom Of course! Some of it is quite heavy. 4y

Greg Iles writes the kind of novel I get completely lost in and never want to end. His writing style is superb. He offers so much detail about the characters as he builds a story woven of death, love, betrayal, hope, and sadness. He leaves no stone unturned for the reader. Just a longing for more. 5 beautiful, glorious 🌟

I love Greg Iles. His Penn Cage books, in particular the Natchez Burning trilogy, are some of my favorites. I was worried this standalone novel would be a letdown by comparison but I was so wrong. The twists and turns Iles is able to weave keep you engaged and unable to put this down. If you haven't checked out Greg Iles, what are you waiting for?! 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I went into this with high expectations that turned to “meh.” The story itself was interesting enough to keep me reading, but I just couldn‘t connect with any of the characters. That, unfortunately, made the book fall flat for me.

There is absolutely nothing this man could write that I wouldn‘t READ AND LOVE!!!!! 💜💜💜 This book is amazing, not only for the twists and turns, good vs. evil, and the southern feel to it. The emotional roller coaster is exhausting. There are a lot of characters, and at any point in the story, you go from love to hate or cheering to jeering in a nanosecond. There are a few solid despicable human beings, but the rest 🤔? Also 💜💜💜 the ending!!!

Robin3 I loved it too. 5y

Can‘t wait for this!!! 📚👏🏻📚👏🏻📚

Kaye Misty, do you have his books in order ? It‘s sorta confusing , because I thought Natchez Burning was the first in that set, but then I saw it was 3rd ? I‘m mixed up. Would this writer be described as writing mystery, suspense, or just good fiction ? And he‘s from your neck of the woods, isn‘t he ? 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kaye yes, he lives in Natchez! He‘s from Germany originally. I would say he writes mystery/suspense. Natchez Burning is first in a trilogy. The second book is The Bone Tree and then Mississippi Blood. All of his books are awesome!! He‘s a favorite of mine! 5y
Kaye Misty, is he the author that was in a horrible accident , that Stephen King came to visit after his recovery ? I know there was an author that this happened with. I just can‘t remember which one. 5y
See All 15 Comments
Kaye Have you gotten to meet him at an event ? I‘m wondering if his accent is German or Mississippian ? And how did he choose to live there ? 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kaye yes, he had a horrible accident and almost died in 2011. I have met him at a couple of book signings and he speaks like me! Lol He‘s very down to earth and super cool!! 5y
Kaye Isn‘t that neat ? Did he move there as a child or do you know ? He had to be there a long time to get the accent down right. 5y
