From Danielle Vega, YA's answer to Stephen King, comes a new paranormal novel about dark family secrets, deep-seated vengeance, and the horrifying truth that evil often lurks in the unlikeliest of places. Hendricks Becker-O'Malley is new in town, and she's bringing baggage with her. With a dark and wild past, Hendricks doesn't think the small town her parents moved her to has much to offer her in terms of excitement. She plans on laying low, but when she's suddenly welcomed into the popular crowd at school, things don't go as expected. Hendricks learns from her new friends that the fixer-upper her parents are so excited about is notorious in town. Local legend says it's haunted. Hendricks doesn't believe it...until she starts hearing voices late at night. Until doors start locking on their own. Until her baby brother is rushed to the hospital--hurt by someone or something inside the house. With help from the mysterious boy next door, Hendricks makes it her mission to take down the ghosts . . . if they don't take her first.

Book 79📚 4⭐️

Very creepy haunted house revenge story!

I absolutely loved the main character in this, she felt so relatable. Vega really nailed the feeling of her past trauma and how it was experienced after the event❤️‍🩹

Can‘t wait to read pt.2! 2/6 books by her done!😊

4 💫💫💫💫 This was a cute, creepy #YoungAdult read. A little romance too. A girl Hendricks moves to a new neighborhood that's a haunted house, while she is dealing with past trauma. She meets new friends from, school and her cute neighbor that help her. This takes one of my #BookSpinBingo free spaces. @TheAromaofBooks

I don‘t read a lot of YA novels but after this story I think I need to read more! I stayed up late to see how this legitimately scary story would resolve itself. While some of the characters became annoying (it‘s hard for me to relate to teens anymore) I did enjoy the main character and the broody neighbor boy next door. The ending wrapped up too quickly for me and there were a few important threads left dangling but there‘s a sequel! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

If like me you spent your younger years devouring R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike books, you will probably enjoy this read as much as I did. It felt very nostalgic to me. The writing isn't perfect, but for a creepy YA read it delivers well.

Just tacked on another 3h30 to #24b4Monday because I couldn‘t put this one down. A fun, genuinely creepy, fast-paced read. It was way better than I expected. Quite a few unexpected layers to this book, which is awesome. The one issue is that it ended on a cliffhanger and the sequel doesn‘t come out until the end of July.

This was a quick enjoyable spooky read. It wasn‘t great but it did keep me reading. The ending was a bit rushed and I wish it would have given a little more about the outcomes of the relationships that had developed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

+10 #teamstoker #scarathlon @TheReadingMermaid

A pretty spooky little book! There are a lot of those quiet moments where you're holding your breath in anticipation, as you would a scary movie. The story itself isn't as developed as it could be but it's a YA good Halloween read.

+1 for #teamstoker #scarathlon #chillingphotochallenge @TheReadingMermaid

I need to catch up on the photo challenge and this certainly works for Day 1: Haunted. I haven't started this one yet but it's on the TBR for this month! Has anyone else read it?

The Haunted by @vegarollins 👻 In this gripping story about a girl recovering from an abusive boyfriend finds herself living in a haunted house. This was one spooky story with ghosts, young love, recovery, and friendship.

This was a book I was really nervous about. I am a big fan of Danielle Vega's Merciless series and I was wondering where she would go from there. I wasn't a big fan of Survive The Night, but this book put me at ease to know she can write a great standalone. If you are a big horror/Stephen King fan, this is definitely worth the read.

A fun and entertaining YA horror/paranormal novel!

Hendricks recently moved to a small town and has a dark past. Little to her knowledge, the house her parents bought and are fixing up is known in town as being haunted. Hendricks doesn‘t believe in ghosts but soon mysterious things keep happening at home when she‘s alone with her baby brother.

This gets a pick from me. I was captivated enough by the story to want to get back to it each time life interrupted.

As for the horror element, meh. The author has been described as the “teen‘s Stephan King”. I would bill this more as a step-up from Mary Downing Hahn.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was much more terrifying—for me.

Still, a good story that I think my middle schools will enjoy.

LibrarianRyan Middle school really. She normally falls in HS level. Good to know. I agree about the Steven King thing. I would almost say even to a step down from MDH. But I may just be jaded from adult horror. 5y
Peddler410 @LibrarianRyan I said step above because of the language and drinking. I haven‘t read anything else by her so.... 5y
LibrarianRyan @Peddler410 Ahh okay. Her Merciless series falls squarley in HS. You could find it in middle schools, and while i am incredibly libral on my recommending, i wouldn't recommend them for MS, only HS. Not for the horror, but sex, drinking, etc. 5y

My students are always looking for more horror. We‘ll see if this stacks up.

LibrarianRyan I would love to hear your thoughts. I have not been as impressed with her books as everyone else seems to be. 5y

For me (not a horror reader), this was on the edge of my comfort zone for most of it, suspenseful but not nightmare-inducing, but the ending took the brutality and violence past what I cared to read and I skimmed the final few chapters. Fans of the genre may find it comparatively mild as the supernatural elements escalate and pieces come together. It's a page-turner, but ultimately not for me.
