Your Own, Sylvia | Stephanie Hemphill
9 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
Your Own, Sylvia draws on Plaths writing and extensive nonfiction sources, chronicling Hemphills interpretation of Plaths life from infancy to her death by suicide at age 30. The poems are arranged chronologically and each conveys an experience in Plaths life told via the voice and perspective of family members, friends, doctors, fellow writers, etc.as interpreted by Hemphill. Each poem is accompanied by an addendum that further explains the factual circumstances of that poems subject. The book also includes an Authors Note, some photos, a section describing the source material for each poem, and suggestions for further reading. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This made me want to dust off my journal and write poetry again.

Hemphill was very creative in telling about the life of Sylvia Plath.

Each section contained facts about Plath and then a poem imagining what the people in Sylvia's life might have been thinking and feeling at the time.

Many of Hemphill's poems were written in the style of Plath's poems.

Very unique! I loved it.

A fictional account of Sylvia Plath‘s life, in verse.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

#YAApril book 3

kspenmoll This looks fascinating! 5y
megnews @kspenmoll it was. I should have written a better review but I was getting ready to go to bed and, of course, it ends on a sad note. Each poem is written through the eyes of different people-her mom, brother, college roommates, friends, neighbors, Ted Hughes. I would recommend it. 5y

I finished listening to this whole grading some truly terrible 8th grade research papers today. I haven‘t read much of Sylvia Plath‘s work, but this book made me want to rectify that.

kellyann28 The research papers comment made me "lol" at work. 6y
Johanna414 @kellyann28 you have no idea... they‘re sooooo bad! 🤦‍♀️ 6y

“I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. (I think I made you up inside my head.) ‘Mad Girl‘s Love Song‘ S. Plath.

This is a book of poetry, inspired by the life of Plath; some from the point of view of various people in her life and some in the style of Plath's own poems. It‘s an interesting introduction to Plath's life, and makes a good companion to The Bell Jar, I think (which I haven‘t read!).

TrishB A Sylvia book I haven‘t seen! My just have to buy now.... 7y

Nice quick summer read! It may be fictional but it paints a beautiful picture of Sylvia Plath through verse based on her life.
