Different Class | Joanne Harris

The impressively versatile Joanne Harris in her psychological thriller mode, at her darkest and most unsettling. After thirty years at St Oswald's Grammar in North Yorkshire, Latin master Roy Straitley has seen all kinds of boys come and go. Each class has its clowns, its rebels, its underdogs, its 'Brodie' boys who, whilst of course he doesn't have avourites, hold a special place in an old teacher's heart. But every so often there's a boy who doesn't fit the mould. A troublemaker. A boy with hidden shadows inside. With insolvency and academic failure looming, a new broom has arrived at the venerable school, bringing Powerpoint, sharp suits and even sixth form girls to the dusty corridors. But while Straitley does his sardonic best to resist this march to the future, a shadow from his past is stirring. A boy who even twenty years on haunts his teacher's dreams. A boy capable of bad things.

Another book i finished at the weekend was this twisty thriller set in a minor Yorkshire private school alternating between 1981 + 2005. Latin teacher mr straitly lives for the school, haunted by events concerning a former colleague the appearance of an old boy as a super head causes ripples as old grievances, and crimes raise their head. I loved this and do like bks set in schhols which can be pressure cookers. Definitely recommend.

erzascarletbookgasm Still to read this. Is this a follow up/sequel to her two other books or stand alone? Blue eyed boys, Gentlemen & players. 5y
Cathythoughts I like the sound of this one 👍🏻 5y
andrew61 @erzascarletbookgasm i noticed that there were other books set in the town and school at the back of the book but GR didn't suggest it was a series. This definitely felt like a stand alone but i will give the others a go. 5y

A decent sequel to Gentleman & Players, though I liked G & P a little bit better. Still, I was happy to go back to St. Oswald‘s and Roy Straitley. Wanting to know what secrets would be revealed kept me turning the pages. I hope she writes more in this series.

"A masterpiece of misdirection" indeed. Wow, I loved this and the last third completely caught me out. Would be a perfect read on a foggy afternoon with a glass of red.

I read and loved lots of Joanne Harris' books some years ago but then I kind of forgot about her and haven't read anything new of hers for ages. I'm really looking forward to this. Her writing always feels comforting yet there's often an undercurrent of magic and superstition, the"forking of the fingers to divert the path of malchance..." Also, she often writes about food ?

minkyb It will be fun to discover a familiar voice again. Hope you enjoy. 7y
bedandabook I read this quite a while ago and don't remember too much about it, apart from having really enjoyed it. Hope you do too! 7y

Breaking out of my norm for something meant to boost my number since Goodreads told me Im two books behind to make my goal. A good, fast paced thriller usually busts my plateau and was totally what brought about my Harlan Corban binge last year. And once again, Baby Girl's piano lesson is my stolen 30 minutes.

This one was a bit slow to start, but I enjoyed seeing how the mystery unraveled. Bad memories are stirred up when a former student becomes head of St. Oswald's, and an old Master sets out to find a truth from many years ago. Deceit! Intrigue! I'd like to read the other Malbry books by Harris now that I know there are more! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterD

I got everything wrong! All the surnames and the narrator personal sympathy made me point to the wrong person 🙀 I just love when a book trick me under my nose, it means it completely got me caught in to it and I missed details as pronouns and physical descriptions. Also, the more I read the more I hope in a happy ending but I am afraid this book is too realistic to have one.

I keep forgetting that the story is told by a professor in 2005. I know is more that 10 years ago now but still seems like a complete different age by the nostalgic way he speaks of Saint Oswald.
Also, I was wondering why I dislike Harrington so much, at this point of the story he is actually a good young boy, maybe a bit cheeky but nothing more. Is just the professor's ideas that influences me so much!
Good writing, Joanne!

Fun Facts About Murder:

Use Coca-Cola to clean up blood spills. The combination of ascorbic acid and carbonated water actually digests the blood, leaving no trace of evidence.

I really enjoyed this! A clever psychological thriller, beautiful writing and totally absorbing. I was not aware this was to follow her Gentlemen & Players and Blue-eyed Boy, but it can be read as a standalone, as only reference is the school and certain characters. Such a versatile writer, so different from Chocolat. Two thumbs up from me! 👍🏼👍🏼

This first page of the prologue already got me hooked. I am guessing this will be unputdownable. Anyone read this?

ScorpioBookDreams I read it a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. I loves Gentlemen & Players and this is part of that trilogy I think. 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @ScorpioBookDreams thanks for sharing. I didn't know that, have not read G&P. I hope this can be read on its own..I've only read her other book - Chocolat (liked the film adaptation too). 8y
ScorpioBookDreams I haven't read the second book either. I think they are connected by the school itself but nothing else. 8y
