Sometimes considered the first English novel, its writing kinda combines elements of a novel, play, and poem. It‘s also “one of the most significant works of religious, theological fiction in English literature”.
I found the writing style very interesting and for the most part enjoyed reading it. It got a bit preachy at the end and I think ALL characters in the First Part were male 😒 but worth reading for English lit fans!
6/10

The Pilgrim's Progress reads like a part-poem, part-play, part-story. The narrator recounts a dream that he had in jail about a pilgrim – Christian – who abandons his wife and children to hike to Heaven. It's a bit of a slog for a contemporary reader, but also gives great insight into the origins of much of today's literature. Part of the challenge in #thewelleducatedmind is to discuss or journal about how the books are in conversation with each other. Since my list started with two picaresque novels (one being the original), it was interesting to see how worldview gives meaning to the journey. I blogged about it at https://ecaseres.wordpress.com/2017/12/29/a-journey-with-a-purpose/

I haven‘t been keeping up very well on my current #SerialReader book this month, so hoping to catch up some today. This is a slow read for me, making the individual issues a good way to monitor progress.

I‘m also trying out a delicious new salad combination for lunch before taking it to a family gathering on Christmas Day. #ReadandEat

#1001books #Reading1001 December 2018 TBR Challenge

Daisey Finished this evening, and although I can appreciate it for what it is, I cannot say I enjoyed all of the reading experience. (edited) 6y
DreesReads That pretty much sums up how I felt about this book! 6y
Liz_M Impressive! This is one I have started more than once and allowed myself to be distracted from. 6y
Daisey @AudreyMorris @Liz_M I really struggled with the beginning, but yesterday I just decided to power through the rest and finally got a bit into the flow of the language and the style reading a bigger chunk. It definitely required more effort than I had expected. 6y
DreesReads It actually required less effort than I expected lol. I expected to really not like it, but it wasn‘t as awful as I expected. I am also not a fan of Little Women which I think clouded every thought of this book for me. 6y

GingerAntics I never could get into this book. I was suggested the updated version by C. S. Lewis, Pilgrims Regress”, but I haven‘t dared read it yet. 7y
Lcsmcat @GingerAntics I read it years ago because it is talked about in Little Women. It was definitely a “read this so you know what authors are talking about” read rather than a pleasure read. I want to read the Lewis too, but haven‘t gotten to it yet. 7y
GingerAntics But you made it through. That is an accomplishment. Somehow I must have missed this in Little Women. Then again, I had it read to me when I was quite small, so I probably wasn‘t making connections to other books yet. 7y

Interesting, though I'm not sure I agree with what seems to be a very unforgiving theology which sets people up to fail.

I can't even count the number of times my parents read this book out to us as kids. We had no tv and books were (and still are) everything. Such a beautiful story of redemption. This is a hand me down copy from my husbands grandpa, he dated 1955 in the cover.
