Book 3: While the world that had expanded from the original novel is a bit vague in the explanation of the gifts that the characters exhibit, this was such a well crafted story that the sloppiness is forgivable. While it claims to be a companion novel, it is a true sequel that brings together characters from The Giver and Gathering Blue. While some deeper world building and a tighter resolution would have been nice, I enjoyed it

“At first, having found his way to Village, he had thought his own brutal beginnings—a fatherless hovel for a home; a grim, defeated mother who beat him and his brother bloody—were unusual. But now he knew that there were communities everywhere, sprinkled across the vast landscape of the known world, in which people suffered. Not always from beatings and hunger, the way he had. But from ignorance. From not knowing. From being kept from knowledge.”

Book 124🎧
Lois Lowry is such a talented writer and Messenger is another beautiful story. Matty was one of my favourite characters from Gathering Blue so it was nice to see him grow in this novel. This one definitely pulled at my heartstrings😢❤️‍🩹

Matty, has noticed a change in the village people… before they shut their border for good he must bring Kira back. But Forest isn‘t happy and everyone has something to trade…

kplovesbooks Yep, this one was so sad! 😢 And one of my favorites of them. 2y
Sharv_Sona I agree, I love the entire series to the bone! I think I might read 'Son' again as it was one of my favourites. 2y
BeeMagical @Sharv_Sona I can‘t wait to read ‘Son‘ ❤️ 2y

Beautifully written by Lois Lowry. Loved the storyline and in this book I could finally see how the first two books were related and how the third on connects them. Can't wait to read the last book in the Quartet and I am very sure that it will be great! I have the book on my bookshelf right beside Messenger so I can start on it right away. 😄📚

It was an illusion. It was a tangled knot of fears and deceits and dark struggles for power that had disguised itself and almost destroyed everything. Now it was unfolding, like a flower coming into bloom, radiant with possibility.

Starting to read this book cause I just finished my other book. It's only about 187 pages, might be able to finish it today if not tommorow morning. Exited to read the 3rd book in the Quartet! 😁

I was looking forward to this one, hoping it would continue on from the abrupt ending of Gathering Blue, which it did. But... I still wanted more... this was a very quick read and the evil that was being caused in the Village never got fully explained and I wanted more depth and detail.

I didn‘t like Th is one as much as the first two. I was glad to see more of a connection between the books but it just didn‘t have the same effect on me. Looking forward to see how the next one is! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love how each book grows the characters and their experience. So interesting to think how our gifts and abilities can work together to help others. This 3rd book really helped you fall in love wirh Matty and better depicted his struggles and how he grew up.

⭐⭐⭐ Like Gathering Blue, I liked the story in this book better than the story in The Giver. And I REALLY liked that Jonas was in this one. It seems to be beginning to tie the series together. The ending of this book was really sad though; I would have rathered a happier ending to this one. 😒

Onto the third book of The Giver series. I would have it sooner but the library I‘m at didn‘t have it in, so had to search it out from another local library. #excited #bookcovers #libraryreads #summerreading

A quick, short read. This book was a nice reminder about how toxic secrets and lies are. Discovering his powers Matty now, a young man is a mature and loving boy that has the capabilities to heal. I am hoping the ending of this one is not true, I am sad because there is so much potential for him. 😭💔😭

This is another underwhelming installment in the Giver Quartet. I probably would have bailed on this series after 'Gathering Blue' if this series wasn't our book club pick for this month. On to 'The Son'. Maybe it will be better than the last two.

Purrsistently Son is the best of the series! I didn‘t like Gathering Blue either. 6y

I really do love this series! I can see how all 4 books would be great to discuss in a book club. I'd like to hear what other people think about them. It reminds me of a fairytale, with lessons we can all learn from.

"It was so important to him, and he made it important to me: poetry, and language, and how we use it to remind ourselves of how our lives should be lived . . ."

hermyknee I absolutely loved this one when I read it! Other than The Giver, it was my favorite in the quartet! 6y

Lois Lowry did it again. It was a fascinating read and heartbreaking at the same time. I'm happy I got to read about Jonah and Kira again but sad in losing our healer. Can't wait to read "Son".

Another classic in the Giver series. I quite liked it, and will be recommending this one. Though Gathering Blue is still my favourite of the three.

I needed this one. After gathering blue I felt pretty let down, I liked it but it just ended. This was much more fulfilling for me.

Enjoying a quiet night in the hotel room by myself after a busy day of vending at #Anthrocon. Wishing now that I'd brought the fourth book in this set, as the four books are all quite short, and imo, really ought to be one book. (The Giver quartet.)

I plan to read Son but I only vaguely remember the prequels except that the conclusion was upsetting. So, I decided to reread this. And it's surprisingly good! I guess the reason it ticked me of then is because I thought it ended there. Knowing there'll be a sequel makes Messenger a real pleasure to read. 👍

[DELETED] 1409720085 Oh man, I loved this one. I think "The Giver" is still my favorite but this is a close second. 8y
pppooraikul @emilydecato Agree. I love the way The Giver subtly conveyed its message. It made us truly 'see' rather than telling and it's amazing. ❤️ 8y
