The Giver | Lois Lowry

I'm taking a long weekend, with Monday off, for self care reasons and planning to finish the tagged book for #Roll100 #76. I've never read it and have been intrigued lately when I saw some FB friends complaining about this being inappropriate for their kids to read in school. I'm 1/3 into it, and it seems fine for school reading to me. What am I missing?

TheBookHippie It gets complained about regularly and parents refuse to allow their kids to read it, due to it being too scary, violent and too diabolical … 2mo

eri.reads Sadly, there are some of the most sensitive parents I've seen out there who are raising extremely sensitive children. It's not many parents but just enough to cause chaos where there doesn't need to be any. Unfortunately, attacks on books are increasing and the first amendment is being stampeded all over. I just hope when I'm at an age to live peacefully in retirement things have changed for the better. There is always hope... 2mo

kspenmoll Our 6th grade has always read it- now I want to check & see if this has changed & why. 2mo
Tamra I haven‘t read it, but my daughter did this year for school (8th). She said nothing about it being inappropriate, but she also didn‘t particularly like it either. 2mo
audraelizabeth I read it in 8th grade as well as the outsiders. I felt it was addressed appropriately, course that was in 2003-2004. 2mo
AllDebooks Enjoy your long weekend x 2mo
LiteraryinLawrence I used to teach this to 7th grade. There is a part later in the book that I assume is what people object to (I‘ll put it as a spoiler). 2mo
LiteraryinLawrence When the kids start to develop The Stirrings, which are sexual feelings, the society then has them take a pill to get rid of them and go back to their asexual and more governable selves. The main character describes how the stirrings feel and he has a minimally racy dream. That‘s it, as I remember. Well, in addition to depicting scenes of killing people which they describe in a euphemistic way. So yeah, there are things to object to. 2mo

TieDyeDude Because it fosters critical thinking and empathy? I read this in middle school, and read it once a year for many years. One of my absolute favorites! 2mo
UwannaPublishme Great to chat today! Love those bookshelves! 2mo
TheBookHippie @TieDyeDude the banning people are wild. The “needle” in the neck is why they banned it here 😝 4w

A fantastic, twisty, scandalous mystery! The soap opera life of Sloane was annoying sometimes, but the story was masterfully told and the ending was the icing on the cake. I couldn‘t put my kindle down and had to keep reading. Book #76 in 2023

It was okay. I liked the premise, and the writing was good. It just wasn't as "thrilling" as I would like from a thriller.

Oooh I love a title with double meaning!!!! Everlynne sucked me in right away with her wit and intelligence. Her self loathing and going back and forth was annoying but she‘s in her 20s so it‘s understandable. I saw the twist coming and it still tore my heart and turned my stomach. I felt all the emotions with this one. Book #76 in 2022

Its ridiculous how much I'm enjoying this series. Quinn is great at characters and the reading is easy so I'm flying through the series. The only question now is whether I'll enjoy the TV series as much as the books. #76-2022

Etsuko is an unreliable narrator but she‘s interesting. I read this for a book challenge; published the year you were born (1982). The plot was strange and didn‘t flow well, the ending was strange for sure. Book #76 in 2021

I'm really enjoying this series. Alex Cross is a good character to read about...wish I started reading James Patterson's books sooner...oh well
