Frantumaglia: An Author's Journey Told Through Letters, Interviews, and Occasional Writings
Frantumaglia: An Author's Journey Told Through Letters, Interviews, and Occasional Writings | Elena Ferrante
32 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 71 to read
A stunning collection of occasional writings, interviews, and letters by Elena Ferrante, "one of the great novelists of our times," as Roxana Robinson in the "New York Times"called her. In this collection, the reclusive Italian author addresses her unwavering decision to remain out of the public eye, her literary inspirations, Italian politics and culture, and the role of the writer (and the publisher) in modern society. Ferrante's voice is as direct, penetrating, acute, inspiring, and intimate as it is in her acclaimed novels."

This volume regroups stunning letters, interviews and essays by renowned author Elena Ferrante. Apart from letting slip some clues on her background, this is another opportunity to get immersed in her amazing writing style.

It is impressive that she succeeded to not reveal her identity since her first book published in 1992, in spite of the immense pressure from the media as a result of the tremendous success reported by her novels worldwide.

Elena Ferrante only exists on the page and wants her books to speak for themselves. But this collection of letters, interviews, and essays (some previously unpublished) reveals a lot about her influences and processes. It made me want to go re-read all her other books.

I‘m in quite the reading slump. Nothing is sticking and my mind starts racing around every time I️ try to sit still and focus. Must be the holidays!

My friend is starting this one, and so I️ thought I‘d give it a try; hopefully I️ will be motivated by the potential for a good book discussion.

Heideschrampf Lovely picture! For me audiobooks help me bridge the reading slumps, maybe gibe it a try? 7y

Another #NFAboutACountryILikeToVisit primarily because of Ferrante‘s Neapolitan series.

originalembot I love finding mistakes in books. Reminds you that authors are human. Plus I like to then message my friend going "I found a HUGE spelling mistake". Or sometimes they put in the wrong word completely. How the editor doesn't pick up on those I'll never know. 8y
JessicaThunstromNelson Ha. This one seems ironic. The words you least expect to have mistakes in them are those related to publishing. 8y

Ferrante believes in books as entities with lives of their own, independent from their creators.

The questions Ferrante poses about her country's own billionaire prime minister seem very appropriate for us as we prepare for the 45th president to take over. She continues: "I would like to find a plot and characters that could represent the mythology within which the symbol Berlusconi is dangerously encysted..." Ferrante calls out the "enthusiastically credulous audience" for believing the illusionism of politicians as "benevolent divinities."

jetspins24 Definitely relevant. Sigh. 8y

Lacythebookworm I really want to read this!! How is it?📚🙌 8y
BookishMarginalia @Lacythebookworm Due to its nature as a collection of odds and ends, it's a bit uneven. Also, I haven't read her books, and some pieces are very much discussions of her books, in particular Troubling Love. (edited) 8y
Lacythebookworm I've read 2 of the Neopolitan novels. Do you think I should read Troubling Love before reading this? 8y

BookishMarginalia @Lacythebookworm The first part has a lot of discussion about it. If you don't like spoilers, it would be best to read the novel first. 8y
Lacythebookworm Thank you! I will read Troubling Love first. Perhaps for the #LitsyAtoZ challenge! 😉 8y

It's here! It's here! I am beyond excited for this one. Elena Ferrante (whoever she is!) is a genius and through her writing I have had the most visceral, most cohesive, most satisfying reading experiences. This book is a compilation of essays, letters, and interviews where she so generously lets us into her life, her anxieties, thoughts about motherhood, psychoanalysis, feminism, and much more. The cover photograph is so perfect as well 🙌🏻.
