This was pitched on some podcasts as a mystery. While there are crimes and strange deaths being investigated by law enforcement, it‘s more paranormal/horror than mystery IMO. Nonetheless, I‘m using it for my ongoing #52mysteries challenge (mysteries set in all 50 US states plus Puerto Rico and Washington DC).

It also works for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 along with a book set in St. Lucia that I read this month.

A YA horror/mystery that features supernatural/urban legend/mythology elements and is set in Puerto Rico.

I was excited about the premise and it‘s diverse horror but it fell flat for me.

YA horror set in Puerto Rico, featuring a group of teenagers being picked off one by one, by a mythical boogeyman monster thing. The story never forgets it's a thriller but still manages to score points about colonialism, addiction, responsibility, and family. Nicely put together and with a satisfyingly dramatic showdown.

Lazy reading day. Enjoying this one. My first book set in Puerto Rico.

This is my first #24b4Monday #readathon in a while. It'll mostly be listening to Tuesdays at the Castle while I clean, but I hope to read a bit of Five Midnights and Wolf Hall.

Book presentation last Thursday at BookMarkPR A simple YA horror based on El Cuco legend (the boogie man).Only children who misbehave can see El Cuco. Developed in PR (author has family in PR) maybe I was influenced by this aspect. It was ok story but keep you interested. Again, interview with author changed my perspective about the story, her intention to write it. Uncle Esteban and auntie are real and they were in the presentation��3.4/3.5��

I thoroughly enjoyed the authenticity of the voice. The characters were sweet and sassy, which makes a good ya in my opinion. The story had enough creep factor befitting of El cuco mythology. The mystery is enticing. See a full review on my blog, link in profile. ����

I'm only about 60 pages in but oh man just reading the language alone makes me all giddy. It's so Puerto Rican hahaha. Compelling read so far. #amreadingyahorror #amreadingyoungadult #diversereading #ownvoices

Up next even though it has mixed reviews. Hopefully I‘ll enjoy it.

Five teens in Puerto Rico begin dying, each on their eighteenth birthday. Lupe and Javier team up to find out why their friends are dying and begin to connect the deaths to an old horror story, El Cuco.

This was an enjoyable listen that, while dealing with a paranormal monster, also deals with issues such as drug addiction, gentrification, and a mixed race MC who questions where she belongs.

A too abrupt ending dropped this to 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 for me.

Getting some cupcakes ready for book group tonight! Not really my own recipe, I‘ve never gotten the hang of cupcakes. But I take a cake mix, switch out the water for some milk, the oil for melted butter, and add some extra flour for the difference in elevation.

My local library asked me to review an ARC of this book for them. Reading the back cover made me think I'd probably love this one. Five friends suddenly start dying off and the killing is linked to their childhood when a darkness started following them.

The story never quite comes together and the relationships between the friends felt forced, making this a so-so for me.
