16-year-old Nora goes missing on Halloween. Her male peers speculate what happened to her as they grow into adulthood. The timeline switches back and forth from their teenage years to adulthood. Powerful writing that definitely stirs up nostalgia. #MountTBR #LitsyAtoZ #LetterP #ReadingUSA2019 #Kentucky (Hannah is a professor at the University of Kentucky.)

Hooked_on_books Sounds interesting. I have one of her books on my nook. Good to know—I can use it for Kentucky. 6y

👎🏼👎🏼Nora goes missing when she is 16 and leaves behind a group of boys from the school she attends. As the boys age they imagine what could have happened to Nora. The book is basically alternating story lines of what happened in the boys lives as youth and what they imagined Nora's life to have been after she disappeared.
It was a mediocre read for me until I got to the quote in comments and then it totally stopped working for me #53of2018

Chellebearss "somewhere in the middle of all of it, somewhere in the dancing and the drinking and the sheer enjoyment of life as it is meant to be lived, Nora Lindell would have fallen in love. She would have fallen in love with a woman. Why? Simple. Because we are men. And so let us say that she fell for a woman" 7y
Bostonmomx2 Well that‘s just....weird. 7y
azulaco ...what? Does it make more sense in context? 6y

Chellebearss @Bostonmomx2 ya, the whole concept of the book didn‘t work for me. A little odd. 6y
Chellebearss @azulaco possibly, but it didn‘t work for me. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Wow, this sounds like everything I didn‘t like about The Virgin Suicides without the aspects I did like. 6y
Chellebearss @Clare-Dragonfly actually a review I read compared the two and VS came out on top lol. 6y

Spent wisely on #SmallBusinessSaturday today at the indie bookstore near me in DC. They were offering a free tote bag with a purchase of $30 or more, so challenge accepted! The bottom two are my husband‘s and the top four are mine. And NOW I‘ll stop buying ALL OF THE BOOKS until after Christmas. 😬

Chrissyreadit Is it a fun bookstore? I keep thinking I need to check it out when I‘m in DC. 7y
erinreads @Chrissyreadit It‘s a great store and the staff are super friendly! Also, the sale section downstairs is 👌🏻 (edited) 7y
Chrissyreadit Excellent will def have to check it out!!! 7y

I enjoyed this book and it's meditation on loss and collective imagination and male friendship. It gave me Irving vibes, probably because it's written in earnest boy voice.
It can be summarized by these two quotes from near the end:
"I can't tell if this is creepy or not,' he said....I feel like maybe that's been the problem most of my life."

"Why did we want it to end that way? Simple: because it's all we could imagine."

Lunch and a book - rice porridge with ground pork and carrots and that's pork floss on top. I'm quite liking this book about a missing girl.

Gosh, I really enjoyed this book! In every aspect, it is so artfully written. The story seamlessly bounces between reality and imagination, past and present. The writing is dreamy and light while packing a strong emotional punch. The narrator is an anonymous character, yet the epitome of the entire cast.

What a thoughtful glimpse of growing-up and moving-on. I'm so glad I finally pick it from my shelf. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is so good! Why did it sit on my shelf so long? If you enjoyed The Trouble with Goats and Sheep or The Virgin Suicides, you would probably like this too!

I really liked this story and would have really enjoyed it, but I was super uncomfortable with the way she talked about both race and gender. It could have been intentional, but I still really couldn't get on board.

This complex, character-driven novel offers a fresh take on the common trope of the missing teenager, filled with plenty of Pittard‘s signature psychological insights. Often in life we don‘t get the catharsis of finding all the answers; The Fates Will Find Their Way is a meditation on this harsh truth. Told in first person plural, it has a haunting, ethereal tone similar to The Virgin Suicides.
