This One Is Mine
This One Is Mine: A Novel | Maria Semple
15 posts | 34 read | 31 to read
Violet Parry is living the quintessential life of luxury in the Hollywood Hills with David, her rock-and-roll manager husband, and her darling toddler, Dot. She has the perfect life--except that she's deeply unhappy. David expects the world of Violet but gives little of himself in return. When she meets Teddy, a roguish small-time bass player, Violet comes alive, and soon she's risking everything for the chance to find herself again. Also in the picture are David's hilariously high-strung sister, Sally, on the prowl for a successful husband, and Jeremy, the ESPN sportscaster savant who falls into her trap. For all their recklessness, Violet and Sally will discover that David and Jeremy have a few surprises of their own. THIS ONE IS MINE is a compassionate and wickedly funny satire about our need for more--and the often disastrous choices we make in the name of happiness.

I read this book on a trip and couldn‘t put it down! I didn‘t quite get where it was all going at first, but there‘s something about Maria Semple‘s writing that I thoroughly enjoy so it keeps me coming back for more. She explored certain themes and topics in this book in an interesting way including autism, diabetes, Hep C, family dynamics, marriage and motherhood. I‘ve now read all her published books and can‘t wait to see more from her!

I always feel awful when I can‘t give a book a truly enthusiastic recommendation, but this one(in my opinion) doesn‘t deserve one. Simple writes well, but if this had been the first of hers‘ that I read, I would not have gone back for more. The characters were not appealing and the story not that engaging. ‘Where‘d You Go, Bernadette” is a much better effort from this author.

BarbaraBB I am just reading Bernadette and loving it! 5y

Come-read-with-me @lamlamlam Thanks. It‘s hard to write something less than positive when you know how hard an author has worked on a piece. I‘m just so glad that Bernadette was so good! 5y

Violet suffers from low self-esteem & her husband is horrible at communication. She meets Teddy (the most foul human) and fantasizes that he is her answer. I almost stopped reading early in the book because I didn't like any of the characters & I found the author's humor & language offensive (N-word, among others). Instead, I shook off my book snobby ways & read it. I found it dark with perhaps a sliver of redemption.

I devoured this in less than two days because it was as difficult to put this down as it is to turn away from a train wreck.

So many self destructive characters and yet I was rooting for them all to get their shit together (well except for maybe Kurt) and to stop making such stupidly selfish decisions.

Does this book get any better? I'm on chapter 3, and I'm just not sure I can get myself to complete the book

sarahs.thoughts.on.books I just couldn't finish 6y

#TBRtemptation post! A satire about wanting more & disastrous choices we make to pursue happiness. Violet lives luxuriously in the Hollywood Hills with her daughter Dot & husband David, a rock-&-roll manager. David expects much from Violet but gives little himself. Then she meets bass player Teddy, and things go from there. Meanwhile, her single friend Sally meets ESPN sportscaster Jerry. Everyone's hiding something. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook

A funny, entertaining, puzzle of a novel where all the pieces fit together at the end. I loved how all of the characters' lives intersected by the conclusion. Great comedic timing and pacing too. Really holds your attention.

I had enjoyed Where'd You Go Bernadette, and thought I would give Semple's first a try, but I wasn't as taken with this one. None of the characters were especially likable, and I basically spent the whole book diagnosing each with their own mental illness. I should probably have had the DSM-V sitting next to me as I read!

I'm going to try Today Will Be Different next; hopefully it will be better!

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY FINDS! 📚📚📚 I walk pass three LFLs on a regular basis and one was overflowing with freshly donated goodness today. I helped declutter by taking these two for myself. 😜

LeahBergen Nice!! 7y

Megabooks I bailed for the time being. I may pick it up again. I hope you enjoy it more!! 8y
AmyWrites @Ebooksandcooks well I didn't realize it wasn't new...it was her first novel! She's supposed to be coming out with another one this year but I thought this was the new one because it's a new printing. Sigh. Hopefully I like it anyway. 😃 8y

These are my library books. They may belong to other people next, but right now, they are mine. 😃📚😃📚😃 Have I mentioned I love Overdrive? Pros: People can't keep books over the due date. Cons: People seem to never return books early.

What are other people's experiences with Overdrive?

Gulfsidemusing My library has been actively encouraging patrons to return overdrive books as soon as they finish. Many people aren't aware that it is even an option. 8y
jeff I love Overdrive. Total budget saver/savior when it comes to audiobooks! 8y
Lauren_reading I hate when people just let their books expire! I always return them as soon as I'm done. I'm so sad when I'm "next in line" for 3 weeks ? But I love the convenience of overdrive and my budget appreciates it too!! 8y

Reviewsbylola I love Overdrive and I always return my books the second I am done reading them. That is actually one of the main reasons I prefer the Overdrive app over downloading to my Kindle app. If there is a way to return library books early from the kindle I have yet to discover it. 8y
LauraBeth I ❤️ Overdrive! 8y
AmberJoy I don't understand how to return books early or else I would do it all the time 8y
Imagineannie I love it, and I always return when I'm done, especially with high-demand books. I do wish the collection available here was a little bigger, though. 8y
BookishFeminist Love Overdrive, but not the app. I always return books when I'm done but I also wish it were easier/quicker/more intuitive to do if you read from your Kindle like I do! 8y
Chessa I love Overdrive! 8y
intothehallofbooks Love love love it! 8y
MMenefee ❤️ Overdrive! I can't seem to return the epubs early. I have found that if I get a bk on the first day it's released, it is only available as epub; kindle is an option the next day, so I don't do auto checkout. I always return the kindle version as soon as I'm finished, and I prioritize reading based on whether there are others waiting. I like the organization of it all. I just noticed I have 255 wish list items available. That's disturbing. 8y
Hazel0303 I am so happy I discovered Overdrive! Any major issues I have (book availability) I think might be a NYS issue. So many books that are new releases take forever to appear on the Buffalo and even the NY public library. Then other random new releases appear no problem. I dislike how on the Buffalo overdrive you can't recommend a title. On NY you can, but you can't see how many people are on the hold list until you put a hold on it. 8y
Hazel0303 Overall, I am reading so many more books and love that I am lucky enough to have access to both. 8y
Megabooks @Hazel0303 On my Overdrive, if you are logged out and go to the book's page, you can scroll to the bottom and check the number of holds. But only if you are logged out. 8y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola For Kindle returns, log into your Amazon account and on the main page click on your account. Scroll down to Digital Content (5th item) and click on Manage Your Content and Devices (first item) Click on the ... Box next to your library book. One of the options is return. It's a bit harder than overdrive, but possible. 8y
Megabooks @AmberJoy For Kindle books, see above. For books in the Overdrive app, simply press and hold the book from the bookshelf in the app (not at your library) and the option to return will pop up. 👍🏻 8y
Blaire I mostly use kindle and overdrive only for audiobooks, but I always try to return early. On my library's site I can see how many people are on the wait list. Don't mind long waits and generally fill up my hold list. Love forgetting about a book and then getting the email that it's available. 8y
Megabooks @Blaire I'm an obsessive checker lol! 😂😂 8y
Jebpix Love Overdrive! I'm reading so many more now, too, @Hazel0303. Love having my books with me all the time on my phone. Though the iPad iPhone sync doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Thx for the return instructions @Ebooksandcooks -- I couldn't figure out the kindle. 8y
AmberJoy @Ebooksandcooks you are a saint! Thank you for sharing this. I always felt bad about finishing the book but then holding on to it for another 2 weeks 8y
Daisey I live a ways from my library, so Overdrive is my main source for checking out books, and I love it! 8y
Megabooks You're welcome @Jebpix and @AmberJoy !! @Daisey I travel a lot, so that's part of the reason it's great for me! 8y
Megabooks @MMenefee See above for instructions for EPUB. It's pretty easy! 👍🏻 Basically go into the overdrive app on your device, then go to your overdrive bookshelf (not you library's) press and hold the item and the option to return pops up! 😃 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Agreed. I have a kindle fire, so I keep a tab open in that browser, but it is even harder if you have a regular kindle or paperwhite. 8y
Carol I download OverDrive books to my Kindle paperwhite and turn the wifi off. It'll check the books back in but won't remove them from my device until I hit wifi again. Readers gotta read! 8y
sarahs.thoughts.on.books I know this comment is 9 months later, but I love overdrive. Thanks to Overdrive, I've got 3 library cards, just so I can take advantage of the various ebook catalogs. 7y
Megabooks @essayareayaitch I have 2 library cards for the same reason! 7y
