Traitor's Wife: The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold and the Plan to Betray America
Traitor's Wife: The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold and the Plan to Betray America | Allison Pataki
A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America s most infamous act of treason... A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America s most infamous act of treason . . . Everyone knows Benedict Arnold the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British as history s most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold s co-conspirator, Major John Andre, who was apprehended with Arnold s documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot: a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it. Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold s age when she seduces the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride s beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret: loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John Andre. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold. Told from the perspective of Peggy s maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress s affairs even when it could cost her everything, "The Traitor s Wife" brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom."

3.5/5 This was a an enjoyable read. Filled with lush descriptions (that don‘t bore the average reader) of colonial Philadelphia & Hudson Valley, this tale about Mrs. Peggy Shippen Arnold was a quick read. Told from the POV of Clara, Peggy‘s maid, the plan to betray, manipulate, and destroy the Revolutionaries unfolds. The best part was the last chapter. A great history lesson for readers who enjoy Colonial America.

CrowCAH This looks intriguing! 5y

JaclynW Same on the orange toddler king! 🤢🤮😡🤬 5y
MoonWitch94 @JaclynW I just keep hollering at the tv: please please just be a LEADER! Let the experts speak, take their lead, and stay silent! I‘m more dumbfounded every day. 5y
Books88 @MoonWitch94 I feel the same way. He is absolutely awful. And HOW MANY TIMES can one say the word "tremendous". ???‍♀️ 5y
Eggbeater When you said annoyed, he is the first thing I thought of, too. 5y
MoonWitch94 @AJBowers OMG get a thesaurus!!! 🙉🙈 Seriously. @Eggbeater Isn‘t that awful that for so many of us that is true? I used to honestly feel that (even if I didn‘t like the person‘s politics) everyone who holds the office of the presidency deserved respect & honor—-but NOT ANYMORE! How sad 😔 5y
JaclynW @MoonWitch94 I feel that way too after every time he opens his mouth. I cant believe he still has a following. I'm certain every day that he proves HIMSELF to be unfit for the job. Yet, people still think he's amazing. That disturbs me. I've always respected the position and whomever holds it, but I just cannot AT ALL with him. There's so much to be disgusted about. I genuinely fear what he's going to do to our country. (long term consequences)⬇️ 5y
JaclynW At first i believed others would step up to the plate and take care of any messes, but no. It seems our others leaders are fearful of him. Or. They get fired. That should terrify anyone. I'm REALLY looking forward to the elections this year, but at the same time afraid he may win again. What does this say about our country? This is a question I've been trying to figure out since 2016. If anyone can answer that, please do. Seriously. I'm baffled. 5y
JaclynW Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.😉😊🥰 5y
MoonWitch94 @JaclynW I totally agree with you on all fronts. I tried in 2016 to be positive, patient, and just see what would happen. But time after time it just gets worse & worse. And it‘s not even about politics anymore—on a humanitarian level now! Every chance to step up & be a leader is squandered. I hope that November brings something better, but I have lost my faith in that. I was so naive 4 years ago that I just can‘t trust my instincts. 5y
MoonWitch94 @JaclynW I try not to bring politics to Litsy because this is such a beautiful, positive, mostly loving community; politics in today‘s world can really soil friendships. But, I think sometimes, it‘s unavoidable. And he truly is the ONE thing that annoyed me most this week, lol. Thanks for letting ME get that off MY chest 😉😘☺️ 5y
TheBookHippie I just cannot with the orange one ... 5y
MoonWitch94 @TheBookHippie Nope 👎🏻 I have muted all news as of this morning. If it‘s important, my Governor will tell me. 5y

Just finished this last night. I loved Allison Pataki's The Accidental Empress and Sisi... And this also did not disappoint. It's a gripping, immersive look into the life of Peggy Shippen Arnold through the eyes of her maid Clara. Each time I picked this up, I was transported to Revolution era Philadelphia with its vivid depiction of redcoats, rebels, and high society.

Not usually my style of reading but it was recommended by a friend... who decided to mail it to me to make sure I read it. So this is my current read to get through before I can attack my new book haul. It's surprisingly good so far.

Philadelphia played a huge role in the Revolutionary War and the fight for freedom & these 2 books show different sides- A historical fiction about the woman that led to the downfall of a patriot & a biography on 1 of the Founding Fathers. Loved the Traitor's Wife & have always been intrigued by Benjamin Franklin (this have been in my tbr pile for years) #philadelphiafreedom #rockinmay

#DontRememberBuyingThis I apparently bought this as an ebook, read it, and then bought it again in paperback form. I didn't realize I already read this until chapter 3. Despite my amnesia, it is a good story. #aprilbookshowers #recommendsday

It's #womenshistoryreads time! Today I'm recommending THE TRAITOR'S WIFE by Allison Pataki. Pataki may be better known for her novels about Empress Sisi of Austria, but I devoured her tale of Benedict Arnold's wife Peggy Shippen with great relish. There are so many great stories behind the notorious names of American history -- always looking for someone to tell them with style. #historicalfiction #histfic #womenshistory #americanhistory

#debutnovel #booktober I couldn't believe it was Pataki's debut! The story is gripping, the history is fascinating, and the characters are so vivid they leap off the page. It's the story of Peggy Shippen Arnold, her infamous husband, and her (fictional) maid Clara. #recommended

annahenke @subwayreads me too! I didn't like the sequel as well as the first, but she's a great writer! It was more because I got frustrated with Sisi's choices. 8y
