Reservation Blues
Reservation Blues: A Novel | Sherman Alexie
Winner of the American Book Award and the Murray Morgan Prize, Sherman Alexies brilliant first novel tells a powerful tale of Indians, rock n roll, and redemptionCoyote Springs is the only all-Indian rock band in Washington Stateand the entire rest of the world. Thomas Builds-the-Fire takes vocals and bass guitar, Victor Joseph hits lead guitar, and Junior Polatkin rounds off the sound on drums. Backup vocals come from sisters Chess and Checkers Warm Water. The band sings its own brand of the blues, full of poverty, pain, and lossbut also joy and laughter. It all started one day when legendary bluesman Robert Johnson showed up on the Spokane Indian Reservation with a magical guitar, leaving it on the floor of Thomas Builds-the-Fires van after setting off to climb Wellpinit Mountain in search of Big Mom.InReservation Blues, National Book Award winner Alexie vaults with ease from comedy to tragedy and back in a tour-de-force outing powered by a collision of cultures: Delta blues and Indian rock. This ebook features an illustrated biography including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

#FallTreasures #Day24 #NativeAmericanDay

Catching up on posts from the weekend, since I was out of town and away from my books.

I read the tagged book in my Literature of the American West class back in college, and got Lone Ranger and Tonto signed by Sherman Alexie when he spoke at my college.

Suet624 I‘ve wanted to meet Alexie forever. 3y
SamAnne I know he has been a #MeToo casualty and it was with warrant, but wow his memoir You Don‘t Have to Say You Love Me is great. He had a brain tumor when he was writing it and switches from prose to poem. Dammit Sherman! Why couldn‘t you keep it in your pants!!!!!!! 3y
Kimberlone @Suet624 it was over 10 years ago when I saw him speak, but I do remember it being fantastic. @SamAnne yes it‘s unfortunate that his literary legacy has been tainted now by his own bad behavior (similar to Junot Diaz as well 😞), since he has such a powerful voice and perspective. At least we still have the beautiful writing. (edited) 3y
Suet624 @SamAnne yes, I‘ve read all of his books and will always have compassion for him. 3y
Eggs Great choice! I‘ve read several Alexie books 😔 3y

Book #29 of the year: “Reservation Blues” by Sherman Alexie

There was a lot of symbolism and background that I don‘t understand, but it‘s a good book. Funny, hopeful, sad, sober. I think this one will sit with me for a while.

#Riotgrams | Day 9 | #NativeReads

I read the tagged book in college, but have still only read the title story from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. My copy is also signed by Sherman Alexie from when he did a lecture at my university.

ReadingSusan I don‘t understand these “apologies.” At first it sounds so sincere and then he says the women are telling the truth but I don‘t remember it. Like what does that even mean? I am sure it‘s lawyer speak but also if it‘s true that him and all the other men saying the same thing it‘s because it‘s such a normal thing to do they can‘t even recall it. (edited) 6y
Kaye I just have one question : why can‘t men keep their BLEEP pants on and hands to themselves ? It‘s ridiculous, the number of these so called famous people doing it. What about the thousands or millions of everyday men doing the same , where it never makes the news. I don‘t get it. Ladies manage to keep their pants on at least 99% of the time. We don‘t go around groping men. How many of you have encountered a man lately and grabbed his crotch ? 6y
Notafraidofwords @ReadingSusan exactly and the fact that they don‘t recall is scary. 6y

tournevis Non-apologetic apologies are so infuriating. And masculin. And typical. Urgh. 6y
OrangeMooseReads @ReadingSusan if he can‘t remember how does he know it‘s true? Is it because there are more women and he remembers those? All the “I‘m sorry buts” aren‘t apologizes they are BS. I‘m also frustrated with this article. They don‘t flat out blame the women but they shine a favorable light on Alexie. 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye yes! Have there been any women accused? I know Terry Crews has spoken out but I don‘t recall if he ever revealed the accused‘s sex. 6y
OrangeMooseReads @tournevis I‘m so tired of them. Just don‘t even say anything if you aren‘t going to actually own up to your shit. Like I mentioned above the “I‘m sorry but” is BS and it‘s getting tired. 6y
alisiakae That statement makes no sense. The article mentions NPR is investigating the allegations, i wonder when that will come out. The apologies that aren‘t really apologies is so infuriating. 6y
Kaye Happens ALL the time . I was at the gym alone one night. I heard the door thunk shut, but didn‘t see anyone. Next thing I know, a man is RIGHT behind me. The first thing he said is DON‘T BE AFRAID. 😡What ?? I said I‘m not afraid, and just turned around and ignored him. Then he asked me if I believe in God....blah, blah, blah. I reported the incident the next day. They told me to BRING MY PHONE in case I need to call 911 ,then said we have CONT 6y
Kaye Cont— a guy who comes up here and has made some inappropriate behavior to our cleaning lady. She‘s so scared of him, she leaves if he is here. They allow it to go on, and tell US to protect ourselves. WHY do people overlook these jerks and allow it to continue ? Still a lot of work to be done in this area. Same when I worked. They told me never to get on the elevator with JACK. He doesn‘t keep his hands to himself. He‘d been reported multiple times (edited) 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye that is unnerving. How do they not protect their patrons and employee!? That is awful. (edited) 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye I hate hate hate how normalized this behavior is allowed to be. I‘m so glad that finally something is being heard and done. 6y
Kaye Well, it sounds pretty stupid, but I think it‘s still the “boys will be boys” mentality. It‘s our job to either let it happen, kick them in the crotch, or pack a gun. 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye sadly you‘re right. I‘m down for giving them a swift kick to the crotch 6y
Kaye There are days where I‘d be down for having one of those wee little guns with the pearl handle, and just be a really good shot. One bullet to the crotchular area might make them think twice the next time. At least we live in a time where we can report it and they might possibly punish them. How many times in court do they blame the lady for the clothes she wore, the drinks she had, or the Bad Decision” to be friendly to the guy. Her fault ? 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye lol, I‘m sure that bullet would make them think twice. They almost always blame the victim and it‘s disgusting. 6y
teebe 🙄 Ugh. Not all surprised. This sounds like it was written by Alexie and then heavily edited upon advice of lawyer. 6y
ReadingSusan @OrangeMooseReads exactly! It‘s utterly maddening. Ugh. 6y

RIOTGRAMS DAY 9: Native and Indigenous Reads

My copy of Reservation Blues is from a class on literature of the American West. Lone Ranger and Tonto is actually signed by Alexie from a lecture he did at my university. Reservation Blues was great, so I‘m not sure how I still haven‘t read Lone Ranger. The really wonderful movie Smoke Signals is based on the characters from these two books.

I forgot to post this picture before, but here is my book haul from BookFest StL! There were a few I didn't get signed and some I was interested in but didn't buy yet because the author was in a different panel. And I have a stack of books Sherman Alexie could have signed, but I decided to just ask him to sign my favorite. ❤️

Centique Sherman Alexie! 😍😍 7y

"A few inches talker than her older sister, Checkers was the most beautiful lndian woman on the Flathead Reservation. All the young Flathead men called her Little Miss Native American, but she still refused to listen to their courting songs. She liked the old lndian men and their traditional songs."

"Not as obviously pretty as her sister, Chess, living up to her nickname, planned all of her moves in advance"

I read most of this on a plane to and from Chicago this weekend and just finished. What an amazing heart wrenching book. It was given to me before I started working on the Navajo Nation. Sherman Alexie paints such a beautiful portrait of life on the reservation, of the hardship, beauty, family and heart that exists out there. It made me miss my time out there immensely and appreciate that Alexie has brought this book into the world for others.

I really enjoy this author and I liked this book but didn't love it. It was an interesting story of adolescents who form a band and the people they meet along the way. There was a small element of magical realism and the book was very descriptive in Native American culture. I just found it to be a bit slow moving in parts and I didn't find the characters to be super likable. But, overall, the writing was good and the story wasn't bad either.

My favourite author, the one l'd love to meet, is Sherman Alexie. He's such a witty man, with a great sense of humour, but also a very sharp eye for the human soul, both the weaknesses and the strengths.

I love his sense of fantasy and spirituality and even if l know l'll never achieve it, as a writer l'm constantly referring to it.

I'd love to talk about storytelling with him over a dinner 🙃

#KostovaGiveaway @Liberty

AmyG What would you recommend I read first of his? I have read so many good things about him. 7y
kalinichta Yessss. I love Sherman. 7y
Alicia His writing is so wonderful! 7y

JazzFeathers @AmyG l would start from his short fiction, so to get a grip of his settings and themes. And also if his characters, who have a grest importance in his writing, in my opinion. First thing l read was collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto. I think that's a good place to start 😀 7y
JazzFeathers @kalinichta Me too. He's inspiring in so many ways. Have you seen his films too? 7y
JazzFeathers @Alicia He has a way of mixing reality and fantasy in such a natural way. Love it 😍 7y
AmyG Thank you! 7y
kalinichta @JazzFeathers I've seen Smoke Signals, and I have The Business of Fancydancing on DVD. 7y
JazzFeathers @kalinichta l love both of them, but l find that Business of Fancydancing is absolutely outstanding and brilliant. 7y

Sherman Alexie is my #DropEverythingAndRead author. No doubt about it. I love his crispy short stories and the way they all intertwine. But for #RecommendsDay l've chosen a novel (his first) because l think in longer works he really expresses himself at his fullest, creating layers and layers of meaning

Here are the reasons why l love him :)

Centique Did you ever listen to his podcast with Jess Walters? It was so brilliant. 😍 7y
JazzFeathers @Centique No!! Where may l listen to it? 7y
Centique It's on ITunes podcasts and called A Tiny Sense of Accomplishment. They only did it for a year but I'm going to listen to them all again. They're so nice and encouraging to new authors too 👍👍 7y
JazzFeathers @Centique l will seek it out. Thanks so much for mentioning it, l knew nothing about it 7y

Begins with the famous tale of blues musician Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads in Mississippi then passing his guitar on to an Indian on the Spokane Reservation, followed by the rise (and quick fall) of the Indian rock band Coyote Springs with a few legends in the mix.
I love Alexie's storytelling and cultural offerings.

Alexie's writing pulls you in immediately. I'm loving this story that draws from the rock/blues legend of the guitarist who sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads and combines with an Indian legend narrative.
