BOOKMAIL

Another Litsy recommend, this one from @BookishFeminist - with a gorgeous cover like this, which has such a lovely texture that I can't keep stroking the dust jacket – I just had to have a paper copy!

DivineDiana Agree! Love that cover! 8y
BookishFeminist This is one of the best covers this year! Berlinski's has a beautiful writing style & it's clear he did his research on this book. Hope you enjoy it!! 8y

OMG YOU GUYS IT'S BACK. 😱

THE ATTACK OF THE GENDERED ADVERB.

I'm dying over this. At least he provides more descriptors than in the last book we saw this, & it's used in a way that makes more sense, but I knew y'all from my last thread about manful inhaling might appreciate this. 💀

😂😂😂😂

TheNextBook "Somewhat between a giggle and a moan" ??? 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook "hidden reservoir of pleasure" ? like I didn't know women's laughter did this! Where have I been!? 8y
Vinjii I just tried to laugh somewhere between a giggle and a moan and I think I sounded pretty damn unattractive. 8y
See All 44 Comments
BookishFeminist @Vinjii I almost choked 😂 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist I always wonder what woman made any of this "womanly" I dont know anyone that laughs like that. I've heard babies giggle. This reminds of movies where the man orders a huge steak and the woman says "I'll have just a salad." No no. "I'll have a ceasar salad on the side, fries and a steak with a margarita on the rocks, salt." 8y
TheNextBook @Vinjii thank you for trying! 😂😂😂 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook Right! I don't either unless it's maybe Ursula from the Little Mermaid or Cruella Deville. Also damn, don't forget the cheesecake for dessert! 🍰🍰 8y
Sue Just FYI I'm sitting here laughing girlishly - I'm not mature enough to pull off a womanly laugh. 😂 8y
TheNextBook @Sue yes! So do you remove the moan in that case or just do a short version. Can we snort when it's girlish or do we keep are legs crossed? So many rules. @BookishFeminist Cheesecake or those brownies with ice cream on top! Yum. 8y
Sue @TheNextBook No moans but definitely a snort. Lots of hee hee hees. I'm sorry, did someone say brownies? 8y
BookishFeminist @Sue @TheNextBook be careful with those brownies, Sue. Your girlish laughter may turn womanly once you start moaning after chocolate 🍫😂 8y
Legxleg I didn't know womanly laughter involved moaning. I guess I've been doing it wrong! 8y
lisakoby Every one of my laughs is womanly. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to see my daughter achieve a manly laugh. One day. 8y
kammartinez "Somewhere between a giggle and a moan". That is NOT sexy; that's horror movie material right there. 8y
OffTheBeatenShelf.com So I'm supposed to deduce that women laugh with their vaginas, as opposed to men who laugh with their penises. Good to know! 😂 8y
AWahle Alas I shall never have a womanly laugh. When truly amused, I tend to snort. 8y
Megabooks I'm sitting here dying of laughter!! Obvs it's womanly! 😆😆😆 8y
Megabooks And obviously women chortle. 8y
WordWaller Oh nooooooo 8y
Chessa Now I can't wait to spot my own gendered adverb! This is going to be better than Pokemon Go! 😂😂😂 8y
CaitlinSiem I think I pulled something from rolling my eyes so hard lol Oye! 8y
PurityofEssence People say it's healthy to eat at least one manful of grapes every day - errr wait. Hold on now... 8y
BookishFeminist @Chessa Hahahaha right? You find them in the least suspected places. I feel like I caught a Pikachu every time I see one. 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks CHORTLING. I have a feeling this author would have a snit fit if he heard a woman chortle 😆 8y
BookishFeminist @Legxleg I didn't either! Alas, everything I do I must think about how it pleases the menfolk. 8y
BookishFeminist @Lisa4 One day we too can be judged not by our characters, but by the gender of our laugh. 😂😂 8y
BookishFeminist @kammartinez Hahaha right?! Also I think it's a choking hazard. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @OffTheBeatenShelf.com Hahahahaha well THAT was a fun mental image. 🍆😂 8y
BookishFeminist @AWahle Alas you are not alone. I suspect my laughter is what appears in men's nightmares 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @CaitlinSiem LOL my eyes have been rolling further and further into the back of my skull every day with men's antics lol 🙄🙄 8y
BookishFeminist @PurityofEssence 😂 that just sounds dangerous 8y
BookishFeminist @WordWaller Oh yes! I feel special when I run across more of these while I'm reading. It provides me with further instructions on how to be better perceived by men. I discover I've been wrong all my life! 8y
Megabooks Well, then obviously she wouldn't like me. 😝 8y
lisakoby @BookishFeminist LOL 😂😂😂 8y
Bette So throwing your head back and saying: Bwhahahaha is wrong, I'm guessing?? 😆😝 8y
BookishFeminist @Bette It appears to me! Jeez @Bette, you have to work on that to please the menfolk. Gosh! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Nope! He wouldn't like me either! I don't laugh, I cackle. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist Also @Zelma I'm not sure if you saw this but I thought of you when I saw this! 8y
Bette That's me, worried about pleasing... 😆😆😂😂😂 bwhahahaha! 8y
Zelma @BookishFeminist 😂 oh hell yes! I need to catch up on this thread and not wake Mr. Z up with my womanly laugh. 8y
Zelma @Vinjii that is awesome. I tried too and it's not possible for me. those are different octaves! 8y
Zelma @Bette I think only men have the air capacity to get that kind of laugh out, their breath is much stronger then us giggle-moaners. 8y
Vinjii @Zelma giggle-moaners 😂😂😂 8y

Pickpick

This book most closely describes the surreal world I experienced living in Haiti. The author perfectly balances the wonder, the beauty, and the daily struggle to survive. The impact of the int'l non-governmental organizations is obvious everywhere. The work they do is valuable, without question, and at the same time, cripples the country. The mangled system for assigning UN aid is a farce. I always wondered why the garbage trucks were from Taiwan.

Spiderfelt This photo was taken in 1998, on the UN base where the Canadian detachment was stationed. This little boy was abandoned at the hospital where I was a volunteer; he was adopted by another volunteer and raised in Thunder Bay, Canada. The soldiers I knew had huge hearts and were personally affected by the struggle they witnessed. They organized toy drives in their small hometowns every Christmas for the children of Haiti. 8y
BookishFeminist Wonderful review! I have many of the same thoughts on this book but I'm not quite done yet. It's clear he did a lot of research while writing it. 8y

#SelfCareSunday w/books & iced tea. Need to finish this book before it's due. 🍹

It's really good—it provides a thorough and empathetic understanding of the harsh realities of Haiti's economic and political structure. Better than I was expecting since it's written by a white guy, but it's obviously well-researched. The writing is lyrical and beautiful. ☀️🌺

And yes, Starbucks is my second home. 🙃

HotMessJess I was invited to work in Haiti as part of my masters thesis. ❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist @HotMessJess How awesome! Will you be going (did you go)? I imagine it's a beautiful but heartbreaking place to visit. What's your masters in? 8y
HotMessJess Education! It would be work with an awesome nonprofit. Not 100% sure, still a potential!! 8y

Zelma No judgment. I recently started limiting myself to using only the spare change around the house for Starbucks but it still is a haven. 8y
Spiderfelt Just finished reading this. Haven't posted my review yet, but I loved the complexity and authenticity. There is no black and white in Haiti. 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt It really is a complex book. I'm so close to finishing it- I had to set it down for a while because it was dense and I couldn't focus on it, but I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! 8y
BookishFeminist @Zelma Oh my god it's so bad around here. My partner works at Starbucks part time so an entire section of our counter is littered with pastries & we have it at least once a day 😂 I go hang out when he's on shift sometimes because I am usually his ride back, and I can sit there and color or read for a while with a free or discounted drink (and ALWAYS extra shots!) 8y
BookishFeminist @HotMessJess That would be awesome! I'd be interested in hearing about your adventures if that's what you decide to do. I've always wanted to visit there myself. I was a French lit major that specialized in Francophone lit, including Caribbean, so it's an area of the world I would love to visit one day. 8y

"All veins are made for blood."—I really love this quote from Peacekeeping, which is meant to remind us that despite our differences of opinion & appearance, we are all the same at our roots. What a great way to summarize our oneness without negating our differences. ? #Haiti

Next up. Really excited for this one! It takes place in Haiti, where a former sheriff & failed politician goes to work for the UN after going broke in the 2008 financial crisis. He winds up helping to train the Haitian police but gets wrapped up in local politics & scandal. Also can we take a minute to drool over this beautiful cover?! 🌺 Starting this as an intense tropical thunderstorm rolls through makes a perfect Monday afternoon. ⛈

Spiderfelt Wow! That's quite a plot line. I just put this book on a display shelf at the library because I love the cover so much. Now I wish I'd brought it home. 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt isn't it? I picked it up on the cover alone! Maybe you can grab it tomorrow. 😊 8y

itsbrb Sounds so good! 8y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth It's stunning! The art is by Fritzner Lamour—really want to see more of his work. 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney Haha, enjoy!! Berlinski is a great storyteller. I love it so far & think you would too. 8y
BookishFeminist @itsbrb It is so far! It's wonderful storytelling. 8y
LauraBeth @BookishFeminist thanks for saying who did the artwork - I was searching yesterday and couldn't find who did it 8y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth No problem– book artists don't get enough credit in my opinion. 👍🏼 8y
Spiderfelt This was still on my library's 'Great Reads' shelf where I placed it 6 days ago, when I last worked, so I had to bring it home with me today. The author has a great way of setting the stage. 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt He does—Berlinski is a great storyteller. I'm glad you grabbed it today! I'm still only about halfway done so it'll be fun to compare thoughts as we go. 8y
