Of Human Bondage
Of Human Bondage | W. Somerset Maugham
Of Human Bondage is W. Somerset Maugham's 1915 masterpiece featuring the young Philip Carey. The work is considered autobiographical, though Maugham claims that most was "pure invention." The novel is set during the end of the 19th century, and Philip, an orphan, has to maneuver a life as a young apprentice in art and medicine. Philip moves on to Paris to live in a commune of sorts with other artists, which is contrasted with squalor of London. Philip becomes entangled in a love affair so viscous and compulsive it threatens to do him in.Of Human Bondage is a long work, but it allows Maugham to build up an incredible array of memorable characters. You won't forget Mildred Rogers, the torrid love interest, though she is shallow and unfaithful. You'll find that their twisted relationship is the almost a character itself, as Maugham demonstrates that love is itself a form of bondage.

August stats: I only read 11 this month, but two were quite long. One pan (the Flagg) and one so-so (the Dreiser) but the rest were wonderful. All in all a good month.

Nebklvr Been contemplating this book for my classic read... 5mo
Lcsmcat @Nebklvr I love Maugham‘s use of language. I sometimes wanted to shake some sense into the main character, but it‘s a good read. 5mo

I loved spending time with this book. Philip sometimes annoyed me, but unlike Hans from The Magic Mountain or Clyde from An American Tragedy, I loved him anyway. A novel of ideas, with beautiful prose, much sadness, but also much hope.

Lcsmcat My copy is an ebook with a generic cover. I went looking online for the perfect cover. It doesn‘t exist. This sprawling novel requires multiple covers. 5mo

(Day 22 - #Human)

*Meet Philip, born with a club foot and orphaned at the age of nine. His move to the vicarage occupied by his uncle and aunt is not all that salutary for him though. It‘s a rather cold and isolated existence, but there are books, which Philip loves. When he is sent to school he has a hard time, owing to his sensitivity and his disability. He becomes a gadabout, searching for happiness, but decides on being a family

This was a very dense read, longer than the 600 pages would let on. The word count is quite high with unbroken paragraphs spanning pages. But the beauty in which the text is written made this a difficult book to put down. Of Human Bondage is a work that reflects upon a different time in our society but is still so relevant to the struggles of today's youth as they come of age. This is a book I will come back to again.

It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it; but the young know they are wretched for they are full of the truthless ideal which have been instilled into them, and each time they come in contact with the real, they are bruised...It looks as if they were victims of a conspiracy; for the books they read, ideal by the necessity of selection, and the conversation of their elders...prepare them for an unreal life.

I've been reading this book for 2 weeks...I thought I was making progress until I saw how much was still left. It's a decent book but just too long and drawn out for me I think. Not sure if I should keep going or bail, I have only 9 days left on the loan. 😩

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Myhusbandhatesreading his writing is flawless, I loved Razor's Edge, but my copy of OHB is a mass market paperback and I have mature (ok, let's be real...old) eyes.
