24 posts | 28 read | 11 to read
Internationally bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane returns with another heartful romantic comedy perfect for fans of Josie Silver, Sophie Kinsella, or Sally Thorne. If faking love is this easy... how do you know when its real? When her partner of over a decade suddenly ends things, Laurie is left reelingnot only because they work at the same law firm and she has to see him every day. Her once perfect life is in shambles and the thought of dating again in the age of Tinder is nothing short of horrifying. When news of her exs pregnant girlfriend hits the office grapevine, taking the humiliation lying down is not an option. Then a chance encounter in a broken-down elevator with the office playboy opens up a new possibility. Jamie Carter doesnt believe in love, but he needs a respectable, steady girlfriend to impress their bosses. Laurie wants a hot new man to give the rumor mill something else to talk about. Its the perfect proposition: a fauxmance played out on social media, with strategically staged photographs and a specific end date in mind. With the plan hatched, Laurie and Jamie begin to flaunt their new couple status, to the astonishmentand jealousyof their friends and colleagues. But theres a fine line between pretending to be in love and actually falling for your charming, handsome fake boyfriend...

I read this author for the first time last year, and I have really liked her work. This book is probably marketed as a romance, bc it centers on the fake dating trope, but I think you‘re better served if you think of it as contemporary fiction. My main interest in this was that she get revenge on her ex! I did like that friendship ended up being an important theme.

This was an enjoyable fake dating story, Laurie is shocked when her long term boyfriend breaks up with her. It's even more difficult as they work in the same firm. In comes Jamie who also works in the same firm and eventually they hatch a plan to fake their relationship to help each other out. After a while the whole idea gets complicated and it starts to fall apart. Can it be repaired? It fun, a good rom-com, great characters.

This is in between a so-so and a pick. It was alright. No major laughs but overall a decent rom com plot… one issue that kinda hit me in the middle of the books was: the main character is black but she‘s written kinda white, if that makes sense. This had a sensitive pov overall, but it just didn‘t quite feel authentic to me, and i got a bit fixated on that. I‘m def happy to see representation and more diverse characters, so can‘t complain!

Overall, I think I liked this book. It spent way too much time on the breakup and had some oddly timed flashbacks. I HATED the way she had LOL and Haha in the quotes. No one says lol! You can text like that, but I hate books written like that. And the place she worked, was so awful and toxic. I don‘t know why she wanted to work there.

Overall, has a happy ending but super slow and depressing in the beginning.

TheAromaofBooks Because I'm months behind on reviewing books on my actual blog, I was actually writing the review for this one just yesterday! I actually lowered my mental rating since then because the depressing bits have stuck with me way more than the fun bantery bits. It just felt like she either needed to write a story about a breakup OR a romcom, because mixing them together didn't really work. 3y
TheAromaofBooks However, I am looking forward to seeing everyone's thoughts!!! 😂 3y
HeyT I did this in audio last year and the narrator absolutely wrekt me because her performance was so emotional. 3y

Laurie has been dumped by her boyfriend/partner of 18 years. When shortly after their break-up he announces that his new GF is pregnant, she's out for revenge.

What could have been a game of tropes turned out to be a #Romance story with a heavy dose of feminism and diversity.

This felt like an odd set up to do a romance with. Heroine who‘s been in a relationship for 18 years (!) gets dumped by her a*hole bf, & so she realizes her freedom & full potential by...almost immediately getting into another this-is-forever relationship? Meh. There were a lot of great points made about feminism & male entitlement that eventually get undercut by the plot. Tbh, I wish the heroine had rode off into the sunset on her own. ★★★☆☆.

Laurie goes through a terrible breakup. The solution to which is obviously a fake relationship trope.

This ones got some great characters and interactions and Manchester jumps of the page how we rather plot is trope central and kind of sadly predictable. The end of a long term relationship, difficult parental relationships, fake relationships and snippy diffuse women it felt that it might have benefits from just a few less lines of thought. Still a fun easy read and just what I needed after a chaotic two weeks

rockpools Yay! It looks like you got away 😊 5y
Itchyfeetreader @RachelO hey yes we did. I am still incredibly torn on whether it was a smart / socially responsible thing to do or not but just hoping we can get home again and take advantage of the quiet to socially distance as much as possible and relax properly! See you soon 5y

I really, really enjoyed this. I was a little worried at the start, because Laurie's breakup was really, really bleak, but once the fauxmance plot got underway, it was really, really great. I was worried that the resolution wouldn't be satisfying enough, but actually this was really neat. And for those of you who like a heroine who is older than the hero, this has that for you too!
