Year of the Monkey | Patti Smith

From the National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids and M Train, a profound, beautifully realized memoir in which dreams and reality are vividly woven into a tapestry of one transformative year. Following a run of New Year's concerts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore, Patti Smith finds herself tramping the coast of Santa Cruz, about to embark on a year of solitary wandering. Unfettered by logic or time, she draws us into her private wonderland with no design, yet heeding signs--including a talking sign that looms above her, prodding and sparring like the Cheshire Cat. In February, a surreal lunar year begins, bringing with it unexpected turns, heightened mischief, and inescapable sorrow. In a stranger's words, "Anything is possible: after all, it's the Year of the Monkey." For Smith--inveterately curious, always exploring, tracking thoughts, writing--the year evolves as one of reckoning with the changes in life's gyre: with loss, aging, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America. Smith melds the western landscape with her own dreamscape. Taking us from California to the Arizona desert; to a Kentucky farm as the amanuensis of a friend in crisis; to the hospital room of a valued mentor; and by turns to remembered and imagined places, this haunting memoir blends fact and fiction with poetic mastery. The unexpected happens; grief and disillusionment set in. But as Smith heads toward a new decade in her own life, she offers this balm to the reader: her wisdom, wit, gimlet eye, and above all, a rugged hope for a better world. Riveting, elegant, often humorous, illustrated by Smith's signature Polaroids, Year of the Monkey is a moving and original work, a touchstone for our turbulent times.

Very good! Its hard to follow “just kids” however i think this was also a very well written book. I found the “epilogue of an epilogue” rather interesting, in it Smith wrote how she wished to blur the line of fiction and non-fiction in her book and I believe she did just that by combining her dreams and fantasies with the impending coronavirus outbreak. Beautiful book.

While I adored Just Kids (I‘ve read it 3 times and it‘s one of my all time favorites), I found Year of the Monkey was comparatively a little bit of a let down. Denser, less relevant, less cohesive.

This slim volume is a constant stream of memoir, narrative, dream sequence and thought process from Patti Smith. As a lyricist and poet, she writes beautifully, both profoundly and deeply moving at times. This covers the period as she approaches her 70th birthday and the serious illness of dear friends. Her love and loyalty abounds through the pages. At times it is surreal as you try to depict from reality and dreams, leaving you spellbound.

This was my non-fiction pick for July. I got it based on a review from a book account on Instagram. In fact I don't know much if anything about Patti Smith, but I enjoyed reading about her thoughts and musings! #nonfictionbooks

Sadly, I was less than impressed with this book. The topics of aging and death are always fascinating to me and I wanted to read of her companionship with Sam Shepard at the end of his life but none of it really moved me. The last third of this slim book was a bit more interesting, especially her thoughts on the election. One short chapter titled Why Belinda Carlisle Matters almost made the book worthwhile.

Palimpsest I couldn‘t get into this either. I only read the beginning when she was staying at the hotel and wandering around and when it didn‘t speak to me I took it back to the library. I was disappointed. 5y
Suet624 Yes. Good to hear. At that point in the book I started skimming, which I don‘t like to do. The last third finally grabbed my attention. 5y

Patti Smith writes about her 2016, in which she loses people she loves and gets lost in poetry and meditation. Much of this book reads like a dream, where it‘s not clear what‘s real and what‘s in her mind. For all intents and purposes, I‘m not sure that it matters.

AmyG She is so wonderful. I am happy to hear this is good. 5y

I‘ve been busy reading for #NonFictionNovember ! Loved YEAR OF THE MONKEY, which focused on death of loved ones. Disappointed in A ROOM OF ONE‘S OWN, which can be summed up in: “A woman needs money and a quiet space in order to write successfully”. 💜

I voted on the Goodreads awards today & was surprised at how many categories I had to skip because I either hadn't read any of the titles or else the one book that I had read in that category wasn't worthy of a best book vote. As an example, I read a lot of memoir, but out of all the possibilities, only the tagged book is on my TBR. I know I can write in additional titles, but it's too hard to figure out eligibility (pub date in USA).

Lindy One of my two favourite memoirs of 2019 is 5y
Cinfhen Thanks for sharing your personal picks!! If I recall there were 2 books I read and really loved on the GoodReads nominations 5y

Emilymdxn I felt the same about a lot of categories! I was really excited for voting but haven‘t read almost all of the books (which surprised me) and don‘t have the money to read them all now so guess I won‘t be able to improve my knowledge of them! 5y
Lindy @Emilymdxn I mostly rely on library holds, so it isn‘t a financial burden, but that generally isn‘t a successful strategy for reading popular books in a timely fashion. Instead, I am looking at the GR titles as a way to add to my TBR (as if I need more…). (edited) 5y
Hooked_on_books It drives me crazy when I see books on there I find unworthy. Especially when they win. 😑 5y

5/5🌟In her newest book Year Of The Monkey, Patti recounts her happenings during 2016. She takes us along with her during a year long exploration of sorts. While also yearning for the people she has lost over the years and contemplating the passing of time and space. Offering insight and wisdom along the way. Patti's writing is beautifully poetic, tender and philosophical, a calming lull in these turbulent times. #bookreview #bookstagram

It‘s beautifully written, a book about getting old and the ghosts of the people and times that are gone. But it didn‘t feel substantial enough to me. It‘s so heavily dreamy that it feels it could float away. #scarathlon #teamStoker 6 points.
