Know My Name: A Memoir
Know My Name: A Memoir | Chanel Miller
The riveting, powerful memoir of the woman whose statement to Brock Turner gave voice to millions of survivors She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on BuzzFeed, where it instantly went viral--viewed by eleven million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time. Now she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways--there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life. Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces readers to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

Chanel Miller, known as the Stanford rape victim, claims her voice, her story, and her name in this powerful memoir. She recounts her rape and its aftermath and provides a searing critique of rape culture. She‘s a wonderful writer and I‘m glad she had the strength and courage to put this book into the world.

Scorpioseah I am about to finish this book . Do you think the book is kind of draggy ? 2d
Hooked_on_books @Scorpioseah In places, yes. I think an edit of about 50 pages or so would have tightened it up nicely. 2d
Scorpioseah @Hooked_on_books Wow , I have the same thinking but I do like her “Emily Doe's Victim Impact Statement“ very much. 2d
ShyBookOwl I love this title. So moving. It's actually so frustrating to me that we know the names of so many killers and rapists, and the victims just become part of THEIR stories. Good for her! 2d

I read “that Stanford victim”s statement probably a dozen times and was always struck by what a powerful and clear writer she was. So glad I know her name now and I look forward to seeing what she does next. (Also, Brocks dads rib-eye comment will never NOT piss me off 🙄)

This is a stunning book. Chanel Miller writes beautifully & heartbreakingly about being raped: it is all aftermath because she doesn‘t remember the event. I wanted to read this, I was afraid to read this but once I started I could not stop. If you can read it (i.e. won‘t be triggered). You should.

Pretty much a perfect memoir. I was expecting this to be powerful but it still took me by surprise. Chanel Miller is such a spectacularly talented writer, she made me feel safe all the time I was reading about these terrible things more than I would have thought possible. I learned so much, and really felt like I got to know Chanel too. Obviously there‘s triggering material in here but if you can take it, i recommend this so strongly.

⬆️Me listening to Chanel Miller's voice break in the audiobook. I'm thankful that she has the strength to read this herself and that she has regained her voice. It's not enough to hear her trying to speak her truth while an attorney objects, interrupts and makes scathing remarks intended to dehumanize her and vilify her character. We need to listen to her. It's not about drinking or partying. It's about invading a person's body and it's not okay.

“Denying darkness does not bring anyone closer to the light.” If you want to peer into an honest, raw, eloquent, heart breaking, inspiring, bad ass, vulnerable soul, this memoir is a good choice. I hope Miller writes more, about any topic, because she is observant, articulate and strong.

Maybe if Brock Turner had smiled more, one of the three women who turned Brock down before Chanel would have wanted to kiss him. What did he expect, wearing that outfit? He should have known no one would want to sleep with him. And really, if you don‘t want to rape someone, don‘t get drunk. It‘s that simple.

Chanel Miller, I see you. Thank you for your strength and for the light you are shining.

TrishB @Copwithabook no (she praises the detective that supported her) but the justice system and the media and generally society‘s attitudes to women that get attacked because they are drunk! 1mo
janeycanuck @Copwithabook She writes a lot about reading comments on news articles - the victim blaming is awful. And yes, like @TrishB says, she‘s criticizing the system - the backlog of processing rape kits, the delays in going to trial, etc. It‘s nothing negative about the detective or DA. 1mo

I was unfamiliar with the Stanford rape case. From the very first page I was gripped by Chanel Miller‘s plight and hung on her every word. She so eloquently and viscerally walks us through that life changing night and then the ensuing aftermath. With raw details and inspired prose Chanel shares her fears, pain, anger, confusion and sadness. This should be required reading for all college freshmen.

This is the memoir written by the woman who was raped by Brock Turner.

I love the title and premise of this book, given that Chanel lost her name and almost lost her identity in pursuit of justice. It's a powerful story, told in a beautiful manner. Some parts felt a bit disjointed but it was so empowering to read.
