Johannes Cabal the Detective
Johannes Cabal the Detective | Jonathan L. Howard
Johannes Cabal, necromancer of some little infamy, returns in this riotously clever and terrifically twisted tale of murder and international intrigue. In this genre-twisting novel, infamous necromancer Johannes Cabal, after beating the Devil and being reunited with his soul, leads us on another raucous journey in a little-known corner of the world. This time hes on the run from the local government. Stealing the identity of a minor bureaucrat, Cabal takes passage on the Princess Hortense, a passenger aeroship that is leaving the country. The deception seems perfect, and Cabal looks forward to a quiet trip and a clean escape, until he comes face-to-face with Leonie Barrow, an enemy from the old days who could blow his cover. But when a fellow passenger throws himself to his death, or at least that is how it appears, Cabal begins to investigate out of curiosity. His minor efforts result in a vicious attempt on his own lifeand then the gloves come off. Cabal and Leoniethe only woman to ever match wits with himreluctantly team up to discover the murderer. Before they are done, there will be more narrow escapes, involving sword fighting and newfangled flying machines. There will be massive destruction, not to mention resurrected dead . . . Steampunk meets the classic Sherlockian mystery in this rip-roaring adventure where anything could happen . . . and does. From the Hardcover edition.

4/5⭐ If the concept of smartass could be turned into a book, it'd be this one. Delightful. As with the first book I found things that would make me rate this one 3.5 stars (in this book, the tendency to belabor certain scenes and some unfocused asides), but the humor and action bumped it up again to 4 stars.

Bailedbailed

I couldn‘t get more than a few chapters into my #DoubleSpin book this month, so I‘m bailing on it. Maybe I‘ll pick it up again one day when I‘m more in the mood, but for now I‘m crossing it off my TBR. I chose it for a steampunk prompt, and I‘m going to replace it with a Gail Carriger sequel I know will be fun. @TheAromaofBooks

Eh.
The first one, Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, was SO GOOD! I don‘t understand it.
This was a flimsy steampunk mystery that just fizzled.
Hoping the next one is better. He‘s such a good character.

#2 in the Johannes Cabal series. If you enjoy steampunk elements and scientists who are also necromancers, you‘ll probably like this. I must say I am missing his #devil #circus though #mystery #airship

This wasn't at all what I expected from the second book, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Still a witty, hilarious and fun filled adventure, just with more of a detective bend to it. Still continued on the overall story and continued to develop the awesome character of Cabal. Can't wait to see what the third book has in store!

"Cabal disliked him instinctively, having identified him as a man still prey to his hormones while his intellect puttered around in the background like an embarrassed parent." The wit in this book is amazing! I am loving this book so much!

First book for #24in48 finished! While this was a fun read and I loved the sarcasm and dry wit, it fell a little flat. For a book about a necromancer, there was awfully little necromancy; for a book titled 'the detective', there was awfully little detective work. I'd expected a murder mystery, and there was one, but it was impossible to work out the clues yourself because there hardly were any. 2,5/5⭐️
Book 6 for #sumtbreadathon

As I said, I probably won't make it to 24 hours this weekend... but I read as much as I could and almost finished my book. Now I'm off to bed! #24in48

There is possibly no insult so calculated to sting the English as the suggestion that they may at any time be considered foreign, as this flies in the face of the obvious truth that the whole of Creation actually belongs to the English, and they are just allowing everybody else to camp on bits of it out of a national sense of noblesse oblige.

I finally finished this one, after falling asleep on it 3 times this week. I should never try to read after work, I just conk out.

A worthy second installment, but I liked the first book better. The mystery was interesting, but it was hard to concentrate on the politics of made-up Eastern European countries. I'm hoping the next one goes back to its dark steampunk fantasy roots.

It's 11pm my time, but I'm calling it quits an hour early. My #24in48 totals for the weekend come to 13 hours even, 593 pages read, 3 books finished (and one with only ~10 pages left).

Not too shabby, considering how much I was out of the house!

Good lord this book is funny. It's a little slow and Whirty in the beginning but then with things get going and Johannes starts being seduced by someone the hilarity ensues. His reaction to a woman touching him must be that she's a witch because why else would someone touch someone? I'm trying to get through this series quickly for the second time and third time and then I can read the new one

I've had to take a break from reading to pack all of my books up for my move on Thursday. Usually I would say I don't regret owning so many books, but right now I'm feeling it. So many books. I'll love them again after I've settled them into the new apartment 🙃
