I‘m not particularly into #CelebMemoir books but this was a very special book and even better as an audiobook read by Trevor Noah itself.

The book gets every emotion going!

This would make my best ever list of books.

DinoMom This was great and the audio version was fantastic 9mo
Eggs Perfect 👌🏼👌🏼 9mo
Vansa I don't classify this as celeb memoir, really, it's too astute politically for that! I think this book works beautifully as an account of life in apartheid South Africa and the immediate aftermath of democracy, from the perspective of the oppressed. You get so few of those accounts because of the denial of education to Black people in South Africa. 9mo

DivineDiana It is a very special book! ❤️ 9mo
JuliaTheBookNerd Absolutely loved this book! 9mo
Tove_Reads I loooooove this book! 9mo
Tove_Reads Have you gotten around to read MA Hunter‘s The Missing Children Case File? Starts with Ransomed. I am in love with this series. The author is very responsive on ahem X. Also an author I feel like it‘s important to support. You definitely need to read the series if you haven‘t yet. 9mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads No not read any of those. I refuse to call it X, still using Twitter! Will be adding them to my list. Thanks 😁 9mo

I read a lot of great books in February so hard to choose just one, but this book has stayed with me and I want to read it again, so has just got the edge on the others. #12Booksof2022 #February

Great as audiobook read by Trevor Noah himself.

Other notable mentions

The Paris Network - Siobhan Curham (perfect for fans of Kate Quinn)
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - William Kamkwamba
This is The Night They Come For You - Robert Goddard

Deifio I read it a couple of years ago. I loved it too! 1y
Andrew65 @Deifio Not a great one for memoirs but this was brilliant. 1y
Deifio @Andrew65 Oh I agree! I already gifted it, because I liked it so much and the person I gifted was always very interested in South Africa. 1y

dabbe This book was banned by our school district #grrrrrrrr

But my husband and I are going to see him when he comes to Phoenix in 2023. #yay
1y
Andrew65 @dabbe That is terrible!!! In fact I don‘t think I can sum up the words for that. 😡 (edited) 1y
dabbe @Andrew65 Love the (edited) part! 😂 Our district had a major kerfuffle last year at our high school with the book SO YOU'VE BEEN PUBLICLY SHAMED being assigned to the AP JUNIORS! Our principal even got fired, and our English Department Chair was demoted. Every year I would read HUCKLEBERRY FINN with my juniors, I'd wear a shirt that stated “I teach banned books, and I'm proud of it!“ I was so proud of my district for that. Not anymore. 😕 1y
willaful @dabbe Disgusting! My daughter had it assigned in high school, which I thought was just brilliant. It teaches so much, while being funny and interesting. 1y
Andrew65 @dabbe @willaful What does it say about those areas that think this should be banned. Says far more bout them, but also says a lot about society. This is an important book that everyone should experience. 1y
dabbe @Andrew65 Especially since their first “official“ book back in school was THE SCARLET LETTER. What discussions were opened up while reading that! The district now has to have written approval for every single item any teacher wants to read that is not part of the textbook adoption (StudySync), and if it's a novel and it's not on the novel list, you can NEVER teach it. Period. 1y
dabbe @willaful So true! And I'm sure your daughter lived through it, and her innocence wasn't lost (like this parent stated). 1y
Andrew65 @dabbe That is truly scandalous and censorship at its worst. Who makes those decisions and what gives them the right to make those decisions in a so-called free and Democratic society. 1y
willaful @dabbe I was literally thinking, as I commented, about how in high school I had to read The Scarlet Letter and what a useless experience that was. How could I possibly understand or relate to whatever value that book has at 16? 1y

This memoir is certainly worth a read. Funny, shocking and engrossing. I learnt some things about South Africa‘s apartheid too.

Day 4 @AdventRecommends February Book 2

This is a simply stunning book, and even better when listened to as an audiobook by the author. This book gets every emotion going. Hard hitting, scathing, depressing, heart breaking, but yet also humour and laughter at times. Everyone should read this. Quite unique as a book and as shown by his talk show what a talent Trevor is even if he was born a crime. Strongly strongly recommended.

Andrew65 Another book to make my list because of #ReadingAfrica2022 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 1y
MrsMalaprop Have a copy on my #tbr. Might need to bump it up the list. 1y
Andrew65 @MrsMalaprop I definitely would. 1y

Librarybelle Yay!! 1y
Scochrane26 It‘s a great book on audio because Trevor narrates. @MrsMalaprop 1y
Andrew65 @Scochrane26 Wholeheartedly agree. 1y
Suet624 That Trevor got to where he is now from where he was as a child is astonishing to me. And his mother!!! 1y
Andrew65 @Suet624 So so true! Agree about his mother. 1y
MidnightBookGirl This is one of my favorite memoirs of all time! 1y
Andrew65 @MidnightBookGirl Mine too, stands out above all others I have read. 1y
Tamra I wish my library offered this one audio! I‘ve been checking for years - I‘ve heard it‘s terrific. 1y
Andrew65 @Tamra That‘s a real shame, because it is. 1y
ShelleyBooksie Fav audiobook I've ever listened to. 1y
AnnR A spot-on and thoughtful review @Andrew65. I'm not drawn to reading a lot of memoirs but this one's among my top picks, if not my very favorite on audio. 1y
Andrew65 @ShelleyBooksie Can definitely see why. 1y
Andrew65 @Ann_Reads Thanks. Me either, memoirs aren‘t my thing. Read it mainly to cover South Africa for a challenge and was blown away. Helped of course by Trevor Noah narrating it. 1y
Bklover This by far my favorite audiobook, although after listening to it I went and bought the book as well! 1y
Andrew65 @Bklover A special book. 1y
PaperbackPirate I loved this book! Looking forward to listening to it on audio. 1y
Andrew65 @PaperbackPirate Well worth it and I want to listen to it again next year. 1y

EVERYONE should read this book. I didn‘t know exactly what to expect when I picked this one up. I want to say I throughly enjoyed this book but given the topic that seems wrong. I will say this was an eye opening collection of stories that truly highlights the struggles living in S Africa during and after apartheid #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @Texreader

Librarybelle I‘ve heard so many good things about this! 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle I found it to be a very easy read with some humor inside the stories. I‘m sorry I didn‘t read it earlier but everything happens for a reason. 2y

Definitely in the top 2 of all-time best audiobooks (up there with Me by Elton John). It was a learning experience, it was eye opening, funny, uncomfortable, poignant and shocking. It was everything a memoir should be. I see Noah with even more respect, and I look at the world differently. Hands down, an amazing experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the joys of audiobooks are those that are read by the author. Noah is a joy to listen to. He is funny, poignant and engaging. Enjoying this thoroughly so far! #currentlylistening

swishandflick One of the best audiobooks ever! 2y
Christyco125 That prayer circle story kills me every time I listen to this. 💩 (edited) 2y
StellaDz @Christyco125 omg! I was dying! I‘ve never enjoyed a 💩 story so much in my life 🤣 2y

#12booksof2021 #June

This was my first 5 star read of the year and reminded me how much I love reading well written memoirs. I barely knew of Trevor Noah before reading this and was still completely enthralled by his depiction of growing up in South Africa. I‘m not a big rereader, but I can‘t wait to listen to this read by Noah in the future as I‘ve heard the audio is phenomenal

@Andrew65

Andrew65 A popular book. 2y

Listening to this while I do my archaeological fieldwork today. Every day this week I‘ve finished an audiobook. Been a busy field season, ready for a break though. Hopefully soon. I‘ve heard great things about this, and my father himself is from South Africa so it‘s been tops of my list for awhile just hadn‘t gotten around to it.

DivineDiana A favorite! Enjoy! 🎧 3y
CaroPi I love this book in Audio! My favorite part is when they go to the school to play music and dance 🤣 3y

And this brings me up to date! I‘m very happy that I‘ve already surpassed the total number of books I read last year. So far, I‘ve loved Born a Crime, A Tale for the Time Being, and Where‘d You Go, Bernadette?. I feel like I‘m finally back in a good reading groove and am glad to be kicking around Litsy again! Also very happy I can borrow print books from the library again instead of just relying on ebooks.

BkClubCare Born a Crime is absolutely fantastic on audio. 3y
BkClubCare Hello again, I was unable to reply for some reason to the post where you asked what is Camp TOB so I came here to find out the books you like. TOB stands for Tournament of Books. Google “The Morning News Tournament Of Books” and you‘ll find years of good stuff! It is a tournament, usually in March as a book competition like March Madness is for basketball. (Read The history page when you find it - assuming you are still interested.) 3y
BkClubCare For the last few years, the TOB team has hosted a Summer Camp pitting 6 books for an ultimate winner. A few of us on Litsy follow along, thus the #CampTOB hashtag. PS. The winner of March's TOB was Charles Yu‘s (edited) 3y
sarahbellum @BkClubCare Awesome, thank you for the explanation! 3y
BkClubCare @sarahbellum - 😁 PSS - books are published in current year for summer, prior year for the March... It is huge and one of my favoritest things ever. 3y
