Heat and Dust
Heat and Dust | Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
A profound and powerful novel, winner of the Booker Prize Set in colonial India during the 1920s, Heat and Dust tells the story of Olivia, a beautiful woman suffocated by the propriety and social constraints of her position as the wife of an important English civil servant. Longing for passion and independence, Olivia is drawn into the spell of the Nawab, a minor Indian prince deeply involved in gang raids and criminal plots. She is intrigued by the Nawab's charm and aggressive courtship, and soon begins to spend most of her days in his company. But then she becomes pregnant, and unsure of the child's paternity, she is faced with a wrenching dilemma. Her reaction to the crisis humiliates her husband and outrages the British community, breeding a scandal that lives in collective memory long after her death.

Winner of the Booker in 1975, this novel explores the relationship of the British and Indians through the story of Olivia, who “goes native.” It also explores issues of female autonomy. That all sounds heavy, but it‘s handled with a sympathetic touch and occasional humor. I enjoyed it.

LeahBergen I‘ve had this waiting on my shelves for years (you know… one of those ‘bought from a charity book sale/why not throw it in the bag‘ books 😆). 2y
Lcsmcat @LeahBergen I have so many of those! This one‘s worth moving up your list, and it‘s a quick read. 2y

#EarthToneCovers This 1975 Booker prizewinner is the story of a British woman's affair with a minor prince in 1920s India and her granddaughter's search (50 years later) for clues to the scandal. And the small trunk? That's my bookmark box. 😂#AprilBookShowers

TrishB Ohhh that box is gorgeous 💝 (needing a book mark box now, thanks again Litsy 😂) 7y

Using today's #readjanuary prompt #royals and #recommendsday to put this one out there! It's a short novel about a British woman named Olivia who develops a relationship with an Indian prince in colonial India, and her story is intertwined with her step-grandaughter's, who goes to India 50 years later to learn about Olivia's story. Very enjoyable 📚❤️👌🏻

Read for #chutesandladderschallenge when i landed on fiction from India square. Enjoyed it so much more than i thought i would. Great stong complex female characters and the description of India, its smells, the overbearing heat, the complex relationships between claases - it was all so fascinating.

Blueberry I see you follow the SF Library. Do you live there? I am close...in Fairfield...down 80, or actually east on 80. :) 7y
jhod No, just new to Litsy so following everyone it suggests! Am in London, UK 7y

This may be the post I was most excited for this month. This shelf holds most of the ManBooker winning novels. I almost own them all and I've almost read all the ones I have! The Booker prize provides such a diverse range of stories, I've loved each and every one of them. Have you read any of these? What did you think? #awardwinning #booktobar @manbookerprize

Leniverse Dubliners? The booker award is that old? Or am I looking on the wrong shelf? 🙄 7y
susanw Very nice! 7y
Simone_Gibson @leniverse haha no it's just the top shelf, the frame wouldn't fit the one shelf alone! @susanw thank you ^_^ 7y
LeahBergen I love Booker-winners, too! I've read a bunch of these❤️ 7y
